Slippery Snow

by runeatrepeat on December 7, 2009

Wow! I thought it was slippery after the rain. Nope! It was SUPER SLIPPERY today after it snowed this weekend. I felt soooo hardcore running with snow all around me this morning. Who am I? This California girl is out of place here, but I am slip-slopping along. IMG_3080

I even put on my wool socks to keep my toes from freezing! IMG_3081It was gorgeous out with everything dusted white. But – there were a lot of areas of sidewalk that had slush, black ice or icy snow. It was very slippery and something bad happened... IMG_3082

As I was running along I saw a man lying on his side in the driveway. At first I wasn’t sure if he was working on the driveway or what, so I stopped and tried to figure out if I should offer help. He had his back to me and I saw him try to drag himself towards the house.

So, I went up and offered to help. He didn’t want me to help him up because he didn’t think the leg he fell on could straighten out. He told me just to stay with him while he dragged himself to the door and asked me to open the front door for him so he could get inside.

Once inside he told me he was calling his wife and didn’t need any thing else. I knew he was embarrassed and hurt and didn’t want to push it. So, I made sure he was inside with his phone and left.

That interaction gave me a lot to think about on the rest of my run.

I really want to be able to help people. I wish I could have done more for that man. I’ve been considering different career paths lately and I keep getting signs that I need to be more hands on with working with and helping people. I have a lot to think about before I make a move, but I’m going somewhere with this :)

Once I came home I had a big bowl of cereal and a banana with AB. I also ate a small piece of cinnamon raisin bread with PB – I think my tummy just hadn’t registered fullness yet, because a few minutes later I was uncomfortably full!IMG_3084IMG_3087

Okay ladies and gentleman, I have to go. See ya later :)

I’m glad you stopped to help! That was really nice of you. Poor man. :-( Be careful running in that stuff! That’s one reason I moved away from NoVA.

I thought you were going to say you fell and hurt yourself! I’m glad that’s not the case. I hope that man is okay and I’m glad you noticed him.

Please be careful if you’re going to run outside. Be careful of black ice!

You were very kind to help that man. Have you considered a nursing career? You seem interested in Biology and you’d be able to help people.

I’m so glad you weren’t hurt – that’s what I thought you were going to say too. I feel for this guy – that’s rough.

Wow, hearing that makes me want to watch my step more. I’m glad treadmills are ice free at least but you don’t need to run to be at risk

Oh my goodness, that poor man. It was like fate – you running by to help him and by helping him you are making a decision to help yourself, in a way, by pursuing your dream and going down a new path.
I’m being very deep today.

Poor guy. I had a somewhat similar situation where an elderly man was getting out of his car, but something was definitely up as was so unsteady that he couldn’t walk without holding something. I stopped to help him and luckily another guy did too (turned out to be a friend’s husband!), we helped the guy inside his house….. but something was clearly not right. I ran home and called dispatch, to have them at least check on him as I had no idea what to do about the situation.

As for running, it can be a challenge during the winter! Just be careful and keep on truckin!

I love snow runs but they are definitely super slippery.

You are so kind to help the man who fell. You get a gold star for having a super big heart! : )

It’s no fun when you can’t help someone. I worked for a large retailer and if a customer fell, we couldn’t help them up…liability reasons. Weird having someone lay on the ground in pain, but not able to help them.

Oh no! Poor man! I think helping people is definitely an important part of my career aspirations (obviously I’m in to food security/hunger but helping people means so many different things).

Some people just don’t want to be helped though :( We have to respect that too

You should try wearing treads when you run!! I love them and never have to worry about falling! It does take a little getting used to, but it allows me to run in conditions that I wouldn’t normally!! A key when you live through Michigan winters!!

Sounds like a thought-provoking run…you could join me in the nursing field. Nursing School is tough stuff but it will be worth it!
