Ipod Giveaway and Jared Interview

Good day! I started my Tuesday with a big bowl of pumpkin oatmeal topped with almond butter and cereal. Unfortunately, it doesn’t make me feel as full as yogurt bowls. I hate that, but it’s getting cold and I need something warm!

Lunch was a salad and sandwich combination of sorts. I really love big salads or bowls of veggies as a meal, but shy away from them in an attempt to be creative. Well, that is over because I’m focusing on eating exactly what I want and as much as that might get redundant, I’m going to have to do it.

Hopefully you’ll stick around on the off change that I’m giving away an ipod or something 😉 IMG_3694

On the side: Cinnamon roll with pumpkin butter and pumpkin cream cheese.IMG_3695

I licked the cream cheese container clean. I should be ashamed, but I tweeted it and a bunch of people said they do the same thing. No shame in my game.

If you want to know the mundane details of my day to day follow me on twitter :)

Jared Fogel, the Subway spokesperson who lost over 240 pounds on the “Subway diet” ran the New York City Marathon in 5:13:28 this weekend!

Because I am working with Subway to promote their Commit to Fit Challenge, I had the opportunity to interview him before the marathon.  jared running (source)

Jared Fogel was not a runner growing up. If you’re familiar with his story, he was overweight for most of his life, beginning at childhood. That is more inspirational to me than the usual athlete since I wasn’t a runner growing up either.

Fogel said,  “Before this year I never run a mile in my life. This is all new to me. Never something I thought I would be doing. I think if I can do it, anybody can. Start off slow and make sure you pace yourself properly.”

And now he is a marathon runner.

He admitted that he doesn’t get the fabled “runner’s high” that everyone talks about, but that’s not why he’s running…

“While I’m running I don’t get that whole runner’s high. I enjoy knowing how many calories I”m burning. When it’s over I feel a sense of accomplish.”

Jared runs for the calorie burn, I think a lot of RER readers can relate to that.

Since I feel that I really lost the mental race in my last marathon I asked him how much of marathon training was mental…

“A vast majority of it. The mental part of it is critical. Getting over those mental humps – especially on bad runs.  It will be over soon enough.  Each training run I do is helping me achieve that marathon.  There are days you roll out of bed and feel great. There are days you don’t feel great and don’t want to run.

When I did my 16 or 18, I had a bad head cold. I got through it. I was miserable. It was really good for me to get through something like that.

(On marathon day) I hope I feel great. I hope the weather is great. But, you never know…”

Jared’s training program was modest. He ran about 3 days a week, usually Monday, Wednesday and Friday. It was about 16 weeks long, but he built up to it with 10ks and half marathons.

In addition to his training program, he paid closer attention to his eating and cut back on wine a bit. But he wasn’t willing to go to extremes.

“I think there is a perception of runners. There is the perception that you have to be an extremist. You can still run without having to be an extremist,” Fogel said.

I often reference wanting to lose a few pounds before my next marathon and Jared acknowledged the impact of this, “Every pound that you weigh less helps your time too.”

Monica: What do you eat before long run?

Jared: “I do them in the morning so I wake up 2 hours or so before. Breakfast is a bagel with reduced fat PB with a little thing of yogurt. If I get up early, coffee for caffeine. During the run for me personally every 3 miles I’ve been doing those gus. Espresso because its got extra caffeine.”

I personally think the hardest part of losing weight is actually keeping it off, something Jared has managed to do successfully. I asked him for tips on this and love the answer…

Monica: Do you have any advice on how to keep the weight off once someone has lost it?

Jared: “It’s tough.  The battle begins once you lose the weight. It’s a challenge. I think it had to be your mental approach. Phase one is losing the weight. Phase two, three…. is your continued battle. You have to continue to change with your circumstances. Job situation, family, aging – you have to change with those things. If you can get stagnant it can lead you to fall into bad habits.”

Jared’s personal experience being an overweight kid inspired him to form the Jared Foundation. It is an organization fighting childhood obesity. “My goal is that they don’t have to go down the same road I went through myself,” said Fogel.

During the interview he talked about how running fits into his life now. He enjoys it but said, “Do I see myself doing another marathon, probably not.”

Now that he’s crossed the finish line of his first marathon I wonder if that answer is still the same :)

If you’re inspired to run after reading that interview I had a great giveaway for you! I’m giving away green iPod shuffle and a $10 iTunes gift card!

IMG_3698 I love how tiny it is – the gift card looks huge in comparison! I actually don’t have an ipod and take my huge phone on runs, once I load it up with songs I’m going to review if it changed my life.

IMG_3700To Enter: Leave a comment on this post with a great “pump you up” song!

Contest ends Thursday (11/11/10) morning at 7am PST. I will announce the winner Thursday.

SOOO many but at mile 25 of my first marathon “Stronger” by Britany Spears (Glee version) came on and it was so perfect! The lyrics “ain’t nothing but a mile away” got me so excited. When I got home I googled it and turns out it’s actually “It’s nothing but MY WAY” but oh well I still play my version in my head. Defying Gravity from Wicked always gets me going too. I want to reduce my running music addiction but so far it hasn’t happened! I love just throwing a bunch of veggies in a bowl and calling it a meal too, I’ll still be a reader! Jared’s story is so inspirational, his cause of preventing childhood obesity is really important to me personally as a teacher.

  2. says

i have to switch up my ‘favorite’ song pretty often, because i have a tendency to repeat / repeat / repeat until it ceases to motivate me. for the last few months i’ve actually been stuck on la roux’s bulletproof – awesome beat and i’ve been trying not to overplay it:)

congrats on the great interview! i love hearing from “non-natural” runners, because it’s always been hard for me as well, no matter how often i do it (although i fall off the wagon every few years).

p.s. i like looking at big salads!

  3. Jen says

Interesting interview with Jared… and I have to admit, until recently I never got the fabled “runner’s high” either. After I started to run longer distances, however, I noticed a change in my mindset, so to speak… whereas before I would bargain with myself (ie – “Just a little further and it’ll be over”) now it’s the opposite & I find myself feeling so good during a distance run that I keep going past my goal for the day. It’s a wonderful feeling, but it took a while to get to that point (and I don’t experience it every time I run, unfortunately!). Still, it’s so interesting how endorphins work, huh?

Anyway, to answer your question – my “pump up” song lately has been that new Pink song… “Raise Your Glass.” I saw the music video playing one morning on VH1 & I could not get over how hilarious it was (especially the “Too School for Cool” scene). Now I get the chorus stuck in my head when I’m running or even when I’m walking to class. 😀

  4. says

Currently it’s Nelly’s “Just a Dream.” I love that song! The iPod is so tiny. :)

I love Jared’s story. It’s inspirational and when I was losing my weight I ate at Subway a lot because of his story. I knew it was a healthier “fast food” option. I think it’s wonderful that Jared has kept the weight off and ran a marathon!!

  5. daddyrun says

There isn’t really a pump it up song I prefer. What I have is my “get up and go” song. This is the song that I have playing to wake me up in the morning for those early runs. Currently ‘Zoo York’ by Paul Okenfold is what gets me up and out the door…motivated.

  6. Wendy says

I just ran NYC, and my pump up song was “Empire State of Mind” (Glee version) – when it came on in Manhattan I felt amazing!

Great interview with Jared (I saw him at the start – he was in my corral!) and thanks for the giveaway offer.

  7. Lisa says

Pursuit of Happiness (Steve Aoki remix – by Kid Cudi!

i don’t really listen to music on my runs at all though, unless it’s more chill music like edward sharpe and the magnetic zeros or metric or something.

and it’s awesome that you got to interview jared! wasn’t there a taco bell (or some food chain like that) equivalent to jared at one point…?

  8. jenn says

Two of my favourite “pump me up songs” are Another one bites the dust by Queen and Tonight’s gonna be a good night by The Black Eyed Peas. I listen to them when I need some motivation to finish running 5k on the treadmill.

  9. Kristen says

‘So Hard’ by Rihanna always pushes me through the “I want to walk” thought. It also helps me get out the door if the thought of skipping my run pops into my head.

  10. says

My favorite running songs would be the compilations from Jay-Z and Linkin Park. There’s also some good long mixes by Party Ben, the Sixx Mixxes. They’re free to download on the internet somewhere and are great because you don’t have to make a playlist in advance or skip from song to song during a workout.

  11. Lisa says

Love your interview with Jared! I run for a similar reason Jared does – to see how many calories I’ve burned on my HR Monitor. So many people have told me this is wrong and obsessive but there is no difference if I’m motivated by time, distance, or calories, they are just reasons to get out there! I love a good run day – perfect weather, no struggling to get through the run, but for those days that aren’t perfect, a nice calorie burn still helps!

Right now the song I’m liking most is “Club Can’t Handle” by Flo Rida.

  12. Martha says

I was actually thinking about this earlier today…I have plenty of pump-up songs, but one of my faves is Heart’s “Barracuda.” Not only is the song awesome, but it also is proof that chicks can rock HARD!

  13. Angie says

I love Paramore for running songs! Also, ‘Dynamite’ by Taio Cruz and ‘Letting Go’ by Sean Kingston. Makes me want to go for a run right now.. almost. 😉

  14. Krystina says

hey monica! cool interview. thanks for the giveaway! my favorite song to pump me up during a run would have to be “Good Vibrations” by Marky Mark. corny, I know, but it works like a charm!

  15. Leada says

My favorite pump up song is an obscure 80s power ballad called You’re the Voice by John Farnham. My roommate and I listen to it when we’re down.

  16. Madison says

umm can I pick multiples?? new favorite: Like a G6 by Far East Movement (don’t judge). Tooly? Maybe. but listen to it and TELL me you can resist dancing..

  17. says

I am always switching up my “faves”. I don’t even stick to genre…

    These 3 rocked my Tuesday:
Only Girl in the World – Rihanna
    Stuck Like Glue – Sugarland
    Get Low – Flo Rider

What can I say, I like variety! :)

  18. says

    Hey Monica!
I don’t think I’ve ever commented before… but if there was ever a time, it’s gotta be where there is potential iPod grabbing, right?

In addition to my contest entry.. I just wanted to say that I love your blog! I’ve been following you for awhile, and I find your approach to food, health and life extremely inspirational.

My favourite pump-up song right now would have to be Soldier by Eminem. I feel so hardcore when running to that one 😉

  19. says

    I have a few pump-up songs:

    Rock What you Got, Superchick

    One More, Superchick
i swear, it’s like they recorded this for runners:
    “I have everything to lose
By not getting up to fight
I might get used to giving up
So I am showing up tonight
    I am my own enemy
The battle fought within my mind
If I can overcome step one
    I can face the 99”

And my recent fave: Firework, by Katy Perry.

Seriously though, almost all of Superchick’s songs rock!

  20. says

That’s so cool that you got to interview Jared AND have such a good giveaway!

I know it’s not super pump-you-up but I like light and happy music, like “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz. It may not make me run fast but tunes like that usually make it a good run!

  21. erica says

‘survivor’ by destiny’s child or ‘uprising’ by muse both give me an extra burst of energy when i’m feeling sluggish or unmotivated on my run (not to mention my collection of bad ’90s top 40 that i want to sing along to haha)

  22. says

Hubby and I were just talking about this and wondering how Jarred did this past weekend. You read my mind.

My “pump” me up song at the moment is definitely Pink, Raise Your Glass. Loving that song right now.

  23. Ria says

Hi Monica~ I love this positive blog of yours! My ‘pump you up’ song is ‘Beautiful Day’ by U2. [don’t let it get away! :)]

  24. Cate says

I love “Walking on Sunshine” by Katrina and the Waves. That’s just one of the high-energy 80s songs that I love to hear. Others are VanHalen’s “Jump,” A-ha’s “Take on Me,” and perhaps some Duran Duran or Billy Idol.

  25. Elana says

I love listening to rap & hip-hop when I’m running… my latest on repeat is “Imma Be” (Black Eyed Peas). Nice beat to get me going!

  26. says

  27. JessicaEn says

My “pump you up” song is always changing. But right now its “Gold Guns Girls” by Metric.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  28. says

I find that I’m hungry like an hour after eating oatmeal. Egg sandwiches tend to keep me much fuller and they are warm.

Right now, I really like Club Can’t Handle Me Right Now for a pump me up song.

  29. Amy Ramos says

    My “pump up” song is:
Just Dance by Lady Gaga. It gets me in the mood to run a little bit faster.
Thanks for the giveaway and post about Jared. It feels good to know I am not the only one when it comes to weight loss and running.

  30. Rebecca says

i know this is totally corny since it’s so played out right now but i love Magic by B.o.B, it always puts a smile on my face!

  31. Janine says

I really just love anything that I can sing along too…I am that person who sings while I work out! Right now I really like Uprising by Muse and All the Right Moves by OneRepublic.

  32. says

That is so cool you got to interview him. I, like Jared, have run 1 marathon. I also am not sure I want to run another. I really enjoy running half marathons and find them not as hard on my body. But I will probably do another full just so I can beat my time of 5:35.

As for music, anything by Tom Petty, George Thorogood or the Drive-by Truckers. But as for 1 pump up song, that would have to be Steve McQueen by the Drive-By Truckers.

  33. Rachel says

Not a big Eminem fan in general, but Eminem’s ‘Til I Collapse’ can always get me through the tough part of a long run!

  34. says

this is so lame and terrible, but the one song that has been getting my heart rate up recently is…I want it that way by BSB. I saw them on Oprah last week and re-fell in love with that song.

  35. Laura says

My most recent pump up music is Lady Gaga (just about any of her songs!) but I just heard Katy Perry’s Firework and I love the inspirational message!! It’s going on my running rotation and I’ll see how it works.

  36. Jessie says

I know it sounds a little strange, but Michael Jackson’s “Rock with You” was exactly what I needed to conquer the final hill of my first 10-miler this past Sunday!

  37. karka says

tonights gonna be a good night. when I hear it I envision walking into our reception in 8 months from today…yay! and it motivates me!

  38. Bridee says

The best song to pump you up is “I’m a Believer” by Smash Mouth. I have it downloaded 5 times on my workout list!!!

  39. Yin says

My “Pump Up” song is currently Eminem’s “Not Afraid” and his past hit songs like “Stan” (which I love by the way).

  40. maja says

i love a good pump-up song! I love branden flowers’ new song “Crossroads”. so good. and a few Glee songs have surprisingly made my recent playlist (britney and jay z ones). but, john mayer’s “your body is a wonderland” somehow inspires me to make my body a wonderland as well!

  41. Stephanie says

A song that currently pumps me up before a workout is “Give it to me” by Timbaland, Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado.

  42. Lindsay says

Loving D.J. Kahlid’s “All I Do Is Win” right now!! Course, I pry look pretty funny running down the street putting my hands up and down! bahaha!

  43. says

Well, I like music that is basically nothing but screaming, but the song that pumps me up is by a band called Converge. The song is called the Saddest Day.

  44. Leigh says

Super random but I totally love 99 Problems by Jay-Z. I know all the words and seem to always pick up my pace when it comes on. And yes, I am kinda embarrassed to admit this, lol :)

  45. says

I love songs by New Radicals, some are very upbeat and fun to listen! “You get what you give” is pretty motivational too!
I also like Train, “Save me San Francisco” and “Hey Soul Sister” are my favorites!

  46. says

first off, that salad looks so yum! and my fave pump me up song is t-pain “buy you a drink” lol.. i love club songs cause they remind me that i want to be in shape!

  47. says

“Run This Town” by Jay-Z (w/ Rihanna & co.) or “Remedy” by Little Boots always keep me moving! Going to have to check out everyone else’s songs now, though! iTunes is gonna love me….

  48. says

“Magic” By BoB is definitely a pump me up sort of song! And it is so positive and uplifting to think “wow, I’ve got the magic in me!”

And by the way, I also lick the my pumpkin cream cheese container when it is at the end of its last spoonful. I have no regrets. No use wasting perfectly good cream cheese, ESPECIALLY pumpkin cream cheese. =)

  49. kara says

It would be great to have that shuffle on my runs! I’m doing a half marathon in December. A good song for running: “I Made It,” Kevin Rudolf.

  50. Aimee says

Pump It by the Black Eyed Peas always gets me moving faster! I love listening to music when I run but I need to change it up every couple of weeks. Thanks to the above comments I have some new music to check out.

  51. Pam Jenkins says

My favorite running song is Jai Ho from the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack – not only does the message keep me going (it means “be victorious”) but the song just makes me feel like I’m flying!

This little iPod is on my Christmas list… I also lug my phone around and I am so tired of it! I just want a little iPod that i can clip to my shirt/parts and go! :o) Thanks for the great giveaway!

  52. Morgan says

Monica! I love the blog….I have been following you for quite some time now, but am always afraid to comment, but here I am! I needed this blog today. I have been struggling with my weight for years now and I began running two years ago. I have just completed my second half (where I set a new PR by 10 minutes) and am training for my second full….but I keep waivering on whether or not I think I am ready for it. Seeing Jared’s interview has inspired me.

As far as my ‘pump up’ song for running it would definitely be “party in the USA’ by miley cyrus. I know, it’s Miley, but I do not have an i-pod and have never run with music…. so I play this song before my run. Yes, I blast it in my car at 5 AM and sick out loud! It sticks with me and keeps me going.

Keep sharing your story and keep inspiring others!

  53. Laura says

Just signed up for my first marathon. It’s in June. I might be crazy. I watched the NYC marathon and thought I had to do it. My favorite running song is Till I Collapse by Eminem – it ALWAYS gets me going when I’m dragging.

  54. Morgan says

  55. Kianni says

hmm, it depends on what kind of “pump” I’m going for, or rather my mood I guess, if I’m super focused and determined I like “What’s Up People?” by Maximum the Hormone. If I want a happy song to lighten up the run I’d go with “Cherry Saku Yuuki” by Antic Cafe. It makes me happy just thinking about that song 8D

  56. Susan says

I love that ipod- I have an old mp3 player- it is huge in comparison. My newest favorite pump me up song is “She’s a hottie” by Toby Keith. I’m a big country music fan and that one reminds me of why I run. To keep the weight off and be my own version of a “hottie” As soon as it comes on I pick up my pace

  57. says

Such an awesome interview – I love hearing his perspective since his story and history and far different than mine. Also, this just gave me confidence for my upcoming half marathon. Even if I have to go at a slower pace, I’m going to finish that thing! My favorite pump it up song on the iPod is a Tiesto techno remix song – haha! My husband put a bunch of electronic music on my iPod and you can’t deny that beat. My iPod is a dinosaur. Old and heavy. :)

  58. says

My power up song depends on whatever song I’m loving at the moment. But “If you’re going through hell” by Rodney Adkins is a good one. Because sometimes….it’s true. Although it’s country and I’m not sure how many people would like it.

  59. kathy says

My ipod is dying-so this would be great to win!!! I try to change up my songs a lot to keep my interest. One I added after hearing it in a spin class was The Kiss from Last of the Mohicans soundtrack.

  60. Amy says

I just finished my first 10k and am training for my first 1/2 marathon-and my ipod dinosaur desparately needs to be replaced! I have a few different pump up songs depending on my mood- “F* you” by C-lo, just about anything by Rihanna!

  61. Lauren Kwas says

I too have a ginormous IPOD that I lug around on my runs so I somehwat feel your pain. I don’t even have an arm strap yet so I carry it! I would LOVE to own a shuffle. They’re SO portable!

Anyhow, my pump you up song is definitely “Survivor” by Destiny’s Child. I know it’s super old school but every time it comes on, it never fails to inspire me to press a little harder =]

  62. says

It’s super cheesy but right now I’m loving Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream”. It’s so catchy and I always bop my head along to the beat when I’m in the car and pretend other drivers can’t see me singing along :)

  63. Chandler says

I absolutely love running to Jay-Z in general, but my current favorite pump-up song is “On to the Next One”. Thanks for your honest and inspiring blog and thanks for hosting a giveaway!

  64. Taylor K. says

For runs Lose Yourself by Eminem I know all the words so I mouth it while on the treadmill which definitely gets a lot of stares haha!

  65. Christina says

I totally use Lose Yourself (just like the commenter above) to start out all my races. I have my FIRST marathon this weekend and I’m hoping it’ll pump me up to rock it.

  66. says

I know that it is totally ridiculous for me to love the song of a 13 year-old, but “Bottoms Up” by Keke Palmer is my favorite! If I hear it when I’m not running, I want to go run right then!

  67. says

How have I just found you when I have been reading blogs for so long? I’ve missed you, and I haven’t even known it!

I just moved to Hong Kong at the beginning of September with my husband of a month (although we were together for 10 years before putting a ring on it). While the hubs works, I try to go to the gym. At my gym the music is loud, but one song always makes me smile… “That’s Not My Name” by The Ting Tings.

I also really like “Lisztomania” and “1901” by Phoenix because they are catchy, and I forget I’m running.

  68. Rachel says

I sooo need a new ipod! I’m on my third and it’s about to bite the dust. Fav pump you up song = republica, ready to go

  69. says

I’d love to win the Ipod, it would be great for running because it’s so compact. My favorite songs to run to are songs from Glee because they have a fast pace and keep me going strong :).

    Amy Lauren

  70. Julie H says

what an inspirational story. I am a newbiw runner and was supposed to run a half marathon this past weekend, but just had emergency surgery instead. I was super excited for this race, but now I am more focused on my health and getting back into running after I recover.

  71. says

Bombs Over Baghdad by Outkast has pushed me thought a lot of tough points in runs, but one of my all time favorite “pump me up” songs is “Let It Rock” by Kevin Rudolf!

  72. christi says

so many songs get me pumped up, its hard to choose!
right now my mega jam is heartbreaker (laidback luke remix) by mstrkrft featuring john legend. it rockssss 😉

  73. Ali W says

Ever since Angela from Oh She Glows wrote a while back about singing Kesha’s Tic Toc in her head with her own lyrics to pump herself up for a run I find myself doing it all the time. It has a great beat and its fun to sing silly lyrics to yourself about rocking a run :)

  74. Andrea says

Empire State of Mind! It pumped me up enough before I saw it on Glee, but now that it’s been on Glee, I imagine the cast in the courtyard singing it and that pumps me up even more!

  75. Brittany Meenach says

Call me crazy! but anything by the black angels or why! pumps me up, it reminds me of the rush at being at the live shows and gives me that extra boost, I don’thave an ipod and my phones been dropped two many times.

  76. Meredith says

When i’m running a route with a monster hill I always add Fort Minor “Remember the Name” to help keep myself motivated to get to the top!

  77. Tom C says

“Beep Beep” by 13 Stories (www.13stories.com) – that song will get you moving! I thought it was also appropriate since you are getting your new car today!

  78. Jenn says

Love the ipod, Monica! Your interview was great, as well :) I really like listening to Manian’s Welcome to the Club when I run . . .

  79. Elizabeth says

I love many songs, and many pump me up (especially mash ups), but lately it’s Usher’s DJ got us falling in love.

  80. Molly says

Loved this post. How awesome that you got to interview Jared from subway! My new running beat is “dynamite” by Taio CRuz

  81. eliza says

eminem’s “till i collapse” is single-handedly the best pump-you-up song in existence. i teach spinning classes (and ran the chicago marathon) and use it when cycling and running. gives me chills every time.

    congrats jared!

  82. Wazzup says

I carry my phone with me as well… but apart from an emergency connection device it also doubles as a mp3 player, a camera, a video recorder, an audio recorder, a notebook (for those great ideas I get during the run … well it could happen), a GPS-logger, an interval timer and even a navigation system. If I’d buy a bluetooth heartrate band it could even record that as well.

Well at least my phone did that before I dropped it down a flight of stairs :(

Anyways, re music, apart from some podcasts I have a folder with loads of music with a 90 bpm tempo especially for running in a 180 steps per minute tempo.

my favorite pump up song is “stronger” by Kanye West, I always listen to it at the half point of my work out and it gives me the energy to get through the rest.

  84. Nicole K says

I know it’s corny, but a song that got me through my first half marathon was “I’ve Got my Mind Set On You”. Kind of helped me think of that finish line. :)

What is on your salad? Hey,I’m not judging, but is that ketchup and mustard?

Ah! What a great giveaway. My ipod kicked the bucket like two years ago and well.. bills are a higher priority then music unfortunately…

My favorite pump me up song is Dirty- Christina Aguilera! Or any songs from High School Musica. I have no shame….

I’ve run 18 marathons this year, and “Groove Is in the Heart” by Deee-Lite has gotten me through several miles in every single one. I groove along to it, then replay it and groove along to it, and replay it and…

My favorite pump-it-up song is currently In the End by Linkin Park. It helped me through my half marathon last weekend!

  90. Valerie says

It’s a little strange, but I like “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper. I think it’s because it’s upbeat and I like to sing along. Suddenly I find I have a lot of energy!

  91. says

Totally not a “typical” pump you up song, but my two favorites lately are:

Paris by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals (they’re awesome!)
Talk on Indolence by The Avett Brothers (one of my fave bands)

    super peppy and fun!

My pump me up songs change all the time as new ones come out but one that still hangs around with me is ‘Love Addict’ by Family Force 5

I’ve started running more recently myself and am looking into a Turkey Trot to participate in over the next couple weeks. Congrats to Jared! Most I’ve ever run myself have been 5Ks (back in high school and college on the XC teams). Fell out of the habit of constant running and am regretting it because it’s not as easy getting back into it. Happy to have started, though.

My all-time favorite pump me up song is “Sporting Life” by the Decemberists – you can’t help but want to get up and move!

  94. Lungs says

Great giveaway, Monica! Not only is this a great prize, but looking through the comments gives me lots of ideas for new downloads.

    I echo Christina’s “Thunderstruck” as a great pump-me-up song!

Great interview! I have been ‘training’ for walking the upcoming Reggae Marathon half in Jamaica and know that long distance is not for me however we’ll see how I feel about it after the race right?

One of my favorite pump you up songs is an oldie, Holding Out for a Hero by Bonnie Tyler (Footloose).

I love cheesy pump up songs like Eye of the Tiger and Thunderstruck. However, I really like Bad Religion by Godsmack…just love the beat and tempo, makes me want to sprint even when I’m tired!

    Love the green ipod!

  98. says

My favorite running song right now is Cee Lo Green “F*** You,” just because it’s so damn catchy! I probably put it on my running playlist 10 times just to make sure it comes up atleast once each run.

  99. Carrie S. says

My favorite pump-up song is “Bittersweet Symphony” by The Verve. The build-up in the beginning and rhymthic chorus are exactly what I need to keep pushing myself the extra mile. Plus, picturing Ryan Phillippe from “Cruel Intentions” doesn’t hurt for motivation either!

Great giveaway! My favorite song to get pumped up with is “I Gotta Feeling” by Black-Eyed Peas. Hey, I’m 40. It’s hip to me!

This probably sounds weird but…I like to listen to Janie’s Got a Gun. It builds up to a great energy level that makes me want to pound the pavement.

  103. Vanessa says

I’m a beginner runner and found that the right songs make it much easier to get through a run. I’m definitely adding a lot of songs mentioned here in the comments. Right now my favorite song to pump me up is “Fly like a G6” by Far East Movement.

  104. says

I love reading stories like Jared’s because it makes me feel like I WILL run a marathon one day.

Don’t judge but running to Pitbull is amazing. “Forget about your boyfriend and meet me at the hotel room…” omg so amazing.

My latest pump-up song is the eye of the tiger, aka the Rocky song. It randomly played on my pandora station during my half marathon on Sunday and cannot get it out of my head ever since.

  108. Danielle B. says

I always use Ludacris – “Move B*tch” as my pump up song. It’s not for everyone’s taste, but it definitely works for me when I’m on those long runs and I’m trying to cruise. :)

ACDC Back in Black! I’m a huge Iowa Hawkeye fan, and that’s the song when the team comes out in their “swarm”…….it always pumps me up!
