Ipod Giveaway and Jared Interview

by runeatrepeat on November 9, 2010

Good day! I started my Tuesday with a big bowl of pumpkin oatmeal topped with almond butter and cereal. Unfortunately, it doesn’t make me feel as full as yogurt bowls. I hate that, but it’s getting cold and I need something warm!

IMG 3683 thumb Ipod Giveaway and Jared Interview

Lunch was a salad and sandwich combination of sorts. I really love big salads or bowls of veggies as a meal, but shy away from them in an attempt to be creative. Well, that is over because I’m focusing on eating exactly what I want and as much as that might get redundant, I’m going to have to do it.

Hopefully you’ll stick around on the off change that I’m giving away an ipod or something icon wink Ipod Giveaway and Jared Interview IMG 3694 thumb Ipod Giveaway and Jared Interview

I licked the cream cheese container clean. I should be ashamed, but I tweeted it and a bunch of people said they do the same thing. No shame in my game.

Jared Fogel, the Subway spokesperson who lost over 240 pounds on the “Subway diet” ran the New York City Marathon in 5:13:28 this weekend!

Because I am working with Subway to promote their Commit to Fit Challenge, I had the opportunity to interview him before the marathon.  jaredrunning thumb Ipod Giveaway and Jared Interview (source)

Jared Fogel was not a runner growing up. If you’re familiar with his story, he was overweight for most of his life, beginning at childhood. That is more inspirational to me than the usual athlete since I wasn’t a runner growing up either.

Fogel said,  “Before this year I never run a mile in my life. This is all new to me. Never something I thought I would be doing. I think if I can do it, anybody can. Start off slow and make sure you pace yourself properly.”

And now he is a marathon runner.

He admitted that he doesn’t get the fabled “runner’s high” that everyone talks about, but that’s not why he’s running…

“While I’m running I don’t get that whole runner’s high. I enjoy knowing how many calories I”m burning. When it’s over I feel a sense of accomplish.”

Jared runs for the calorie burn, I think a lot of RER readers can relate to that.

Since I feel that I really lost the mental race in my last marathon I asked him how much of marathon training was mental…

“A vast majority of it. The mental part of it is critical. Getting over those mental humps – especially on bad runs.  It will be over soon enough.  Each training run I do is helping me achieve that marathon.  There are days you roll out of bed and feel great. There are days you don’t feel great and don’t want to run.

When I did my 16 or 18, I had a bad head cold. I got through it. I was miserable. It was really good for me to get through something like that.

(On marathon day) I hope I feel great. I hope the weather is great. But, you never know…”

Jared’s training program was modest. He ran about 3 days a week, usually Monday, Wednesday and Friday. It was about 16 weeks long, but he built up to it with 10ks and half marathons.

In addition to his training program, he paid closer attention to his eating and cut back on wine a bit. But he wasn’t willing to go to extremes.

“I think there is a perception of runners. There is the perception that you have to be an extremist. You can still run without having to be an extremist,” Fogel said.

I often reference wanting to lose a few pounds before my next marathon and Jared acknowledged the impact of this, “Every pound that you weigh less helps your time too.”

Monica: What do you eat before long run?

Jared: “I do them in the morning so I wake up 2 hours or so before. Breakfast is a bagel with reduced fat PB with a little thing of yogurt. If I get up early, coffee for caffeine. During the run for me personally every 3 miles I’ve been doing those gus. Espresso because its got extra caffeine.”

I personally think the hardest part of losing weight is actually keeping it off, something Jared has managed to do successfully. I asked him for tips on this and love the answer…

Monica: Do you have any advice on how to keep the weight off once someone has lost it?

Jared: “It’s tough.  The battle begins once you lose the weight. It’s a challenge. I think it had to be your mental approach. Phase one is losing the weight. Phase two, three…. is your continued battle. You have to continue to change with your circumstances. Job situation, family, aging – you have to change with those things. If you can get stagnant it can lead you to fall into bad habits.”

Jared’s personal experience being an overweight kid inspired him to form the Jared Foundation. It is an organization fighting childhood obesity. “My goal is that they don’t have to go down the same road I went through myself,” said Fogel.

During the interview he talked about how running fits into his life now. He enjoys it but said, “Do I see myself doing another marathon, probably not.”

Now that he’s crossed the finish line of his first marathon I wonder if that answer is still the same icon smile Ipod Giveaway and Jared Interview

If you’re inspired to run after reading that interview I had a great giveaway for you! I’m giving away green iPod shuffle and a $10 iTunes gift card!

IMG 3698 thumb Ipod Giveaway and Jared Interview I love how tiny it is – the gift card looks huge in comparison! I actually don’t have an ipod and take my huge phone on runs, once I load it up with songs I’m going to review if it changed my life.

SOOO many but at mile 25 of my first marathon “Stronger” by Britany Spears (Glee version) came on and it was so perfect! The lyrics “ain’t nothing but a mile away” got me so excited. When I got home I googled it and turns out it’s actually “It’s nothing but MY WAY” but oh well I still play my version in my head. Defying Gravity from Wicked always gets me going too. I want to reduce my running music addiction but so far it hasn’t happened! I love just throwing a bunch of veggies in a bowl and calling it a meal too, I’ll still be a reader! Jared’s story is so inspirational, his cause of preventing childhood obesity is really important to me personally as a teacher.

i have to switch up my ‘favorite’ song pretty often, because i have a tendency to repeat / repeat / repeat until it ceases to motivate me. for the last few months i’ve actually been stuck on la roux’s bulletproof – awesome beat and i’ve been trying not to overplay it:)

congrats on the great interview! i love hearing from “non-natural” runners, because it’s always been hard for me as well, no matter how often i do it (although i fall off the wagon every few years).

p.s. i like looking at big salads!

Interesting interview with Jared… and I have to admit, until recently I never got the fabled “runner’s high” either. After I started to run longer distances, however, I noticed a change in my mindset, so to speak… whereas before I would bargain with myself (ie – “Just a little further and it’ll be over”) now it’s the opposite & I find myself feeling so good during a distance run that I keep going past my goal for the day. It’s a wonderful feeling, but it took a while to get to that point (and I don’t experience it every time I run, unfortunately!). Still, it’s so interesting how endorphins work, huh?

Anyway, to answer your question – my “pump up” song lately has been that new Pink song… “Raise Your Glass.” I saw the music video playing one morning on VH1 & I could not get over how hilarious it was (especially the “Too School for Cool” scene). Now I get the chorus stuck in my head when I’m running or even when I’m walking to class. :D

Currently it’s Nelly’s “Just a Dream.” I love that song! The iPod is so tiny. :)

I love Jared’s story. It’s inspirational and when I was losing my weight I ate at Subway a lot because of his story. I knew it was a healthier “fast food” option. I think it’s wonderful that Jared has kept the weight off and ran a marathon!!

There isn’t really a pump it up song I prefer. What I have is my “get up and go” song. This is the song that I have playing to wake me up in the morning for those early runs. Currently ‘Zoo York’ by Paul Okenfold is what gets me up and out the door…motivated.

Love your interview with Jared! I run for a similar reason Jared does – to see how many calories I’ve burned on my HR Monitor. So many people have told me this is wrong and obsessive but there is no difference if I’m motivated by time, distance, or calories, they are just reasons to get out there! I love a good run day – perfect weather, no struggling to get through the run, but for those days that aren’t perfect, a nice calorie burn still helps!

Right now the song I’m liking most is “Club Can’t Handle” by Flo Rida.

Rock What you Got, Superchick

One More, Superchick
i swear, it’s like they recorded this for runners:
“I have everything to lose
By not getting up to fight
I might get used to giving up
So I am showing up tonight
I am my own enemy
The battle fought within my mind
If I can overcome step one
I can face the 99″

Monica! I love the blog….I have been following you for quite some time now, but am always afraid to comment, but here I am! I needed this blog today. I have been struggling with my weight for years now and I began running two years ago. I have just completed my second half (where I set a new PR by 10 minutes) and am training for my second full….but I keep waivering on whether or not I think I am ready for it. Seeing Jared’s interview has inspired me.

As far as my ‘pump up’ song for running it would definitely be “party in the USA’ by miley cyrus. I know, it’s Miley, but I do not have an i-pod and have never run with music…. so I play this song before my run. Yes, I blast it in my car at 5 AM and sick out loud! It sticks with me and keeps me going.

Keep sharing your story and keep inspiring others!

I carry my phone with me as well… but apart from an emergency connection device it also doubles as a mp3 player, a camera, a video recorder, an audio recorder, a notebook (for those great ideas I get during the run … well it could happen), a GPS-logger, an interval timer and even a navigation system. If I’d buy a bluetooth heartrate band it could even record that as well.

Well at least my phone did that before I dropped it down a flight of stairs :(

Anyways, re music, apart from some podcasts I have a folder with loads of music with a 90 bpm tempo especially for running in a 180 steps per minute tempo.

I’ve started running more recently myself and am looking into a Turkey Trot to participate in over the next couple weeks. Congrats to Jared! Most I’ve ever run myself have been 5Ks (back in high school and college on the XC teams). Fell out of the habit of constant running and am regretting it because it’s not as easy getting back into it. Happy to have started, though.

My all-time favorite pump me up song is “Sporting Life” by the Decemberists – you can’t help but want to get up and move!

I echo Christina’s “Thunderstruck” as a great pump-me-up song!

One of my favorite pump you up songs is an oldie, Holding Out for a Hero by Bonnie Tyler (Footloose).
