Ask a Monican about Binging

This afternoon I wanted some cookies. But we don’t have any junk in the house #FoodFail  So, in desperation I threw together these muffins (the batter was too runny to be cookies).

In the mix: 2 Tb. apple sauce, 2 Tb. PB, 1/4c brown sugar, 1/4c white flour, 1/4c oats, dash salt, cinnamon, almond extract and baking soda. Added: cranberries, cocoa almonds and somersaults. I can’t believe they’re good because I suck at this game.

Lots of posts lately about binging! Are people going through a hard time because of the holidays?

I was a binger. I would overeat, sneak food, hide food, grocery-store hop to buy the junk food…I wish I could say that therapy helped with my food issues because I think that’s a GREAT way to deal with it…but for me it was just a matter of numbers. I didn’t want to go over my calories with a binge. Period. It helped keep me in line.

I love your Ask a Monican series!

I used to be a binger. And i think there’s a big difference between “over-eating” and “binging”.

Binging was something i couldn’t stop. I’d come home from school, and i’d start eating everything in site. And it wouldn’t stop till night time. Then I lost weight through counting calories, but became really restrictive, and when i couldn’t keep it up i went back to binging and gained the weight back. And it really sucked.

Through a long process i’ve stopped binging completely, and it’s really amazing to me that it happened. I feel so much better, and i’ve lost weight again, actually a bit more then when i was calorie counting.

So it really is possible. But yes i do over eat sometimes, but it really is a different feeling of over eating vs. bingeing.

Ahhh! Your voice sounds just like I pictured it would from reading your blog and seeing the pictures. Thanks for talking about this topic. It’s something I’m familiar with, unfortunately.
You and your blog or so awesome! You inspire me tons! <3

Hm, tough to say. I haven’t binged in almost a year but I literally take it day by day because I’m scared that I’ll start again, and it’s a slippery slope. I still overeat a lot, but I definitely think there’s a difference between that and binging. So… I hope there’s an end to binge eating!

I definitely feel like there is a light at the end of the tunnel! I know for me it came down to the fact that I don’t do well on super restrictive diets. Some people can monitor their food and do the food journal thing and even be meticulous and not let it get out of hand, but I can only live that way for so long before it becomes obsessive and I end up going in the opposite direction. I feel like so many people that struggle with weight easily fall into that trap when they begin to lose. Therapy has been a wonderful wonderful thing for me. I honestly thought I was going to have to live that way forever, and while I don’t think I will ever be 100% “normal” about food…who is? I love that you suggest seeking help. I don’t think most people can do it alone!

Oh, I like you, you’re so hilarious and funny even when talking about serious subjects and you’re really authentic here.
And I totally argee – you can overcome all this binging and overeating and even restrictive eating and other dysfunctional behaviour concerning food but I don’t think it is possible to have a completely normal behaviour concerning food after tackling these issues. But that’s okay, I can live with that.

    :)
    Thanks for your honesty! :)

I have such a hard time tracking my food. I feel like it takes forever to enter on a food tracking site. Maybe I should try the pen and paper method. I think I’m just scared to see how much I actually eat during the day!

Hi! I’m a first time poster that found your great blog from the Self magazine best blog contest. You were nominated along with another blog I read and I thought I’d check out your site and I’ve been a daily reader ever since.

I don’t really know if I am a binger or overeater, but I do know that when I’m sad/stressed/happy/bored/etc. I eat and eat and eat. Exercise helps me maintain my weight (although I am 210lbs), but I only fantasize about how much I could lose if I’d get the food under control. I tend to be obsessive about journaling so I try to stay away from it, but I think that is the answer to me overeating. Thanks for helping me today.

I also LOVE the ask a Monican! :)

I think a lot of eating issues get better as we get older. I struggled in college and early twenties, but as I matured I got better at finding other outlets and not basing my self-worth on my weight. I still have bad days, but I do think it’s possible to end the cycle.

I agree that it seems to be less of a big deal to me as I’m getting older. It used to be the end of the world if the scale was up, but now I just shrug it off and continue with my (healthy) life :)

I have been overweight since a young age and lost a large amount of weight in my twenties. Now I just turned thirty and I have discovering how much I have tied my self-worth to my weight since losing it. I has led me into a cycle of restrictive eating and some binging. I am working to measure by worth by more than the number on the scale and find a path to better eating behaviors.
I love this post, it’s nice to know I am not alone in the struggle and the progress and success are possible.
      Thanks Monica!

The main reason I was successful in losing weight and keeping it off was keeping track of my food. There were times when I got way too obsessed with it, but I find that it’s too easy for me to overeat if I’m not accountable for it in some way.

Thank you for posting this! I have struggled with binge eating for a long time and it is great to hear someone else talk about it. Also, I completely agree that occasionally overeating is all part of normal eating. In fact, I strive to get to a point where I can occasionally overeat without beating myself up and letting it spiral.

I missed these — it has been a while! YAY for bringing ‘em back.

I think you did a good job of responding to those questions. Honest but optimistic! I think it comes down to how BADLY you want it to go away. I know I struggle to stop from falling into old habits at Christmas/holidays/vacations/stressful times (Exams? applications? etc.) BUT knowing that I’ve gotten through things, planning to have little treats, and just realizing that one candy bar isn’t going to make me gain a pound–5 wouldn’t even do that–literally figuring out how minuscule the damage is helps me put things in perspective! It’s NOT worth it to fall into a binge.

A little analogy: If you were driving and saw a cop and knew you were speeding, would you say screw it and speed up? Apply this to how you feel if you’ve eaten what you think is “too much” of whatever food gets you. WHY would you eat more?! Hope this helps.
