Just the Tip : Half Caf and Summer Training

You may have heard a little rumor that I am deeply in love with Dunkin Donuts iced coffee.



And in some twist of amazing fate…

I am going to Florida on Friday.

Florida has DD.

Friday is National Donut Day.

Also, in an effort to avoid complete caffeine addiction I have been drinking half caff for my second (or third) cup. It’s the little things, right? Tell me yes.


Running Tip: Use the summer to focus on shorter distances.

Confession: I have been running A LALA LOT of marathons this year. I’m mostly doing it because I want to burn myself out on running for personal reasons.

It’s not working. I just want more.


This morning I randomly clicked on this article, “Five Common Runner Mistakes” via McMillan.

#3 Too Many Marathons

The Fix: “ Summer is usually the best time to do non-marathon training, as the heat makes marathon training unbearable. Use the summer as a time to do lots of 5K and 10K races and the workouts that go along with them.”

Totally hit home. Luckily, there are no fulls on the ticket for a few months as of right now. Not that I’m opposed to doing another, just that there aren’t a lot of options in the summer. So yeah.

Luckily part II I’ll be in FL and it’ll be 109 degrees with 99% humidity so I’ll take it easy this weekend too!

        Awesome!!! Ya Glen had ran that one before. I am barely making 3 miles right now coming back after baby so I am sitting this one out. GREAT group of people though and my all time favorite race director. Just don’t wear anything that says Ragnar on it or speak of those races….major sore spot with him ; )

    I am only signed up for a relay and a half this summer, but may add some 5 or 10Ks. Holding out to crush a fall marathon! Way to be smart.

    I only drank one cup of coffee. I tend to cut back in the summer. It’s weird.

    Oh great, I signed up for my very FIRST marathon in October – so you know what that means some summmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmer training, blah. Early EARLY mornings for me. And good god woman I have a 5 and 7 year old – I do not EVER cut back on caffeine. EVER. 😉 http://www.colorushealthy.com

    I’ve become obsessed with iced coffee lately! I cold brew my own (because I’m super cheap, and because I eat clean and Starbucks hasn’t gotten the memo on stevia yet…butt munches) and have already had two cups today. YUMMMMM.

    When Carlos’ family drove in for our wedding last year, from Boston, we asked them to pack up & bring with pounds of DD coffee. We just recently realized we can get it at Cotsco but it was so fun getting a little *present* when they opened their suitcase!

    Today I only had 3 cups of coffee and that is because I was too busy at work to have more…I usually have like 5 :( and I’m a 100% DD drinker …extra cream extra sugar…bring it on!
    Thanks for sharing the McMillan article …I think I burnt myself out this past winter and couldnt’ get motivated this spring. So I’m the opposite now …wanting to hit the road again and race now that I missed all these fun spring races. DARN. Enjoy the time off from training it is really nice to take a little break every now and then.

    I usually only drink one “cup” of coffee, but in the efforts of full disclosure, all of my coffee mugs are approximately the size of my face, so they are probably closer to three cups in one. So three. I’ve had three cups today. And pretty much every day…oops! 😛 Maybe I should give that half-caf stuff a try, lol

    I’ve got a 50k in a couple of weeks -insert panicked screaming- and after that, I’m gonna take it easy and just run to run for a while … until Ragnar in October.

    I had two cups today, full caff. Probably more than that. Is plus caff a thing?

    I try to limit my coffee to 2 cups per day but man, some days need about 7 or 8 to make it through 😉 Oh – and I just signed up for my first marathon! The Long Beach Marathon in October. I’m only slightly terrified!

    I drink a somewhat insane amount of coffee but I didn’t invent coffee and therefore it’s not my fault that it’s that delicious and joyful.

    No coffee today, just a cup of green tea. I’m trying to be gentle with myself lately and coffee is technically toxic. Can’t live with it, can’t live without it.

    i’ve had 3 cups of black coffee today. i just can’t do half-caf… my body NEEDS the caffeine (that’s the caffeine addiction talking!).

    Yay for Dunkin Donuts! I am spoiled because I live within 5 minutes of tow of them. They’re butter pecan iced coffee is amazing!! But full of sugar :)
    I usually drink one cup of coffee at home in the mornings. I just got the new Keurig Vue coffee maker.

    2 cups of coffee this morning.
    And as far as running, marathons are fun. I just ran one two weeks ago. It is hot here already and I am focusing on speed, shorter races and a half marathon PR in the fall (which will be tough since I have run so many) You are so close to qualifying for Boston, and I think if that is what you want to do, you need to focus on training well and setting a goal race. Proper training , taper and recovery go a long way.

    I don’t like coffee and never drink it! haha!
    I can see everyone now turning their backs on me in the running community…
    I’d love to run in Florida! I don’t mind the heat and humidity … actually only my hair hates it! It curls up and frizzes in protest! 😉

    1 cup at home, rest into thermos (that fits in my bike’s bottle cage) and rest at work – so approx 6-8/day (yes, I like my coffee!). Usually Trader Joes ground each day, will sometimes stop at a DD or the local bike + coffee shop instead.

    Ran a local 10K Sunday, may do a daughter-dad 5K in July, then it’s prep for century season (3 on the schedule). Missed cutoff for Army 10 Miler so no idea what next long event will be.

    It’s summer 365 days here. Don’t forget the humidity. Then again, we’ve the perfect excuse to indulge in cocktails, mocktails, ice cream etc. :)

    Just one cuppa so far – when I woke up this morning. Will probably have another after lunch or maybe for tea break.

    I’m coffee addicted, and I’m proud that I can say that I had JUST 2 this morning!
    Sometimes I’m glad, that I’m living in the middle of nowhere in Austria, because I can’t go to dunkin donuts, starbucks….each day. I have to plan trips and vacation for visitig them 😛

    One small pot (I have the 5-cup maker) every AM. Right now I’m sipping a hot cup of DD Dark coffee with a splash of almond milk. Delish.

    Have fun in Florida! I have scaled back my running in the summer because of the heat and I am working on 5k and 10k PR’s. I have stopped drinking coffee. It was making me crazy and I was not feeling great afterwards so no more in my life :(

    I am in Florida and there are literally no longer races (except tri’s) from May until September. But I am going to be one of the crazies doing hard summer training for a fall marathon. Hope you have a blast while you are in FL!

    I have a feeling I understand your reason for burning out on running for “personal reasons.” Let me just say at 31 weeks prego I miss it more than anything, and dream about it. I had to stop running pretty early in my pregnancy due to some bad morning sickness and then by the time I felt better, running just put too much pressure on my bladder. I keep telling myself, “9 more weeks until I can run!” Even though I know its more like 15 since I won’t exactly ready to slip out the door the day after this little bambino arrives.
    So I guess my point is, run while you can!

    October seems to be the biggest month for Marathons and in order to train for one you have to train in the summer! :(

    I just did a half on June 1st and sadly I don’t have another one until August 18th. I am bluer than blue :(

    I only have one cup of coffee EVERY MORNING but it is my 16oz travel mug. Then its water the rest of the day aside from a decaf lemon tea at lunch and maybe a decaf green tea at night as a “snack”
