Gel Manicure Review and Update

Hello! How are ya?

Last night I had a great time at girls’ night with some of my favorite people. I was in charge of bringing dessert and was told “Nothing healthy.” Guess they’re sick of my quinoa chia cupcake recipe experiments!

So, I grabbed a massive pumpkin pie from Costco and whipped cream. It was between this and cupcakes but I had a craving for pumpkin pie. (Note the other essentials that I picked up along the way.)

grocery must haves for happy life (600x800)

You know it’s a good time when the salad goes flying across the room…

That or it was an action shot. One of those.

olive garden soup (600x800)

Thursdays are my rest day from running so I started my day with a walk and some strength training with free weights at home.

I came back and devoured the rest of the raspberries from yesterday…

Then, I realized I don’t have my life together because I can’t even eat berries without somehow staining my favorite hoodie.

Gel Manicure Update

15 days ago I got my first gel manicure. I waited so long to try it because I was skeptical it was going to last and it’s so much more expensive than a regular manicure. I’m not fancy or dainty or careful with anything in life so I knew it wouldn’t really last for me. I like the colors of the Glitterbells collection.

This is day 1 of the gel manicure situation in Scarlett:

red nails first gel (600x800)

Day 15 gel manicure update:

gel manicure update review (600x800)

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?! Yes. Two weeks later my nails aren’t tragic or chipped or anything. This has never happened in my life.

nails did[3]

Pros: Lasts 2+ weeks with no chips. Has kept me from biting my nails –> this is probably the first time in 25 years that I haven’t bitten my nails!

Cons: Costs more than regular manicure. I didn’t realize how fast my nails grow and you can see they have grown out.

Overall: I would do it again with the great nail salon in Springfield Missouri – especially if I have events or parties.

nails done like riri

Question: If you had to bring a dessert to a small get together tonight – what would you bring?

I need ideas for next time!

I get gel manicures for special occasions or vacations and I only get the french manicure so they don’t look as obvious when its growing out. I’m also so lazy and will leave it on for like a month before I just start picking it off. Not good for the nails but I don’t get them done often.

For a quick and easy treat, I bring saltine toffee surprise. Google it for a million different variations. So quick and easy and everyone love it.

The first time I got a gel manicure I LOVED it! Then I went to get a second after it had grown out and they fell off after only a few days! So now I’m back to just doing them in my living room haha

I love the no chip, but my nails are too thin and weak for them, they ruin my nails.

I realized i don’t have my life together when reading your confession post the other week. Everyone was all “sometimes i eat chips for dinner…sometimes i watch hours of tv….i eat lots candy once a month…sometimes i wear leggings as pants…” and i’m reading them thinking, “uh that’s my every day.”

Love the gel manicure! But it’s bad news bears when you try to peel it off yourself. It totally ruins your nails.

Getting it off suck…. And if you don’t do gel again, your nails are kind of beat up. It is probably soak off. Take a cotton square, drench it in nail polish remover and then wrap the square around your finger (each nail) with a square of tin foil and wait for like 5 or more minutes. You may then be able to scrape it off. That’s the downside. It’s kind of all the time or nothing.

First of all, I agree with your lady friends. If you’re going to do dessert. Do dessert. I eat healthy for every other meal, so I like real desserts for sure. And yes, your first gel manicure can be an amazing thing! I get them quite a bit because they last so long. Happy Thursday! 🙂

I love Costco pumpkin pie! I also love their chocolate fudge cake, but that is really rich and feeds a lot of people. So for a small gathering I’d probably just make some brownies. Now I want chocolate.

Your mani definitely lasted a long time! That’s awesome! I’m typing this with super chipped nails thanks to doing my own nails with that 60 second dry crap and no top coat.

I like to bring mini cupcakes. I also have a delicious rum cake recipe that is a huge hit but it requires baking and an hour of your day. But it has lots of rum in the batter AND the glaze and with walnuts on top the next morning it makes a delicious breakfast with coffee 😉

I miss gel manicures. I used to get them as a treat but a co-worker mentioned the danger of the UV lights and then I sissied out. I’ve since read that some of the concern is overblown but I haven’t gone back. We just got Costco, and I keep pondering the membership but haven’t done it yet.

I love desserts and I am always in charge of them at family events! One of my favs is muffin size shortcakes, yep made individually in a muffin tin and macerated berries. This is a huge hit and I absolutely love fruit so it works for me too!!

Okay – last time I did gel it lasted a week before it started to peel off. Based on all these comments, either it was a bad job, or I’m broken!

I love gel manicures, going to get one tonight! I try and keep it for special occassions though because I can’t justify the cost or time all the time to get my nails done.
As for dessert, i would bring cupcakes because everyone loves cupcakes.

I was thinking the same thing because if I don’t want to/have the money to do it again – how do I take it off?

They eventually start to peel off. Kinda like how you would peel the glue off of elementary school glue bottles after it dries. You can also put acetone/nail polish onto a cotton ball and wrap it in foil so that your nail soaks up the acetone.

love the gel! to take it off, they will charge you at some salons, and take forever. what you need is foil, cotton balls, and if you can find it, 100% acetone (i got some on amazon). Regular nail polish will work (the ‘gentle’ formulas and non-acetone ones will not). Just pull a piece of remover-soaked cotton ball and put it on your nail, wrap with a small piece of foil. Pre-tearing little squares for this is a good idea because it gets hard to do when you’ve got foil fingers.

also, to make those growing-out gaps not seem so obvious, you can take a regular nail polish thats the same or similar shade and just paint one coat on top of your nails and start where the growth area is. sometimes i just get nude gel manicures so i can put my own colors on top!

hope it helps! love the blog xoxo

I love gel because you don’t have to worry about messing them up, it dries instantly! Especially nice when you get a pedicure and need to go on a run after 🙂
