Run Eat Repeat

An Old Cookbook…

Hello from Florida! This morning the weather was spectacular (for FL) – cool and a little overcast at around 75 degrees. That’s the best I can ask for around here, so I’ll enjoy it!

I really did enjoy my run this morning because I saw a manatee!!! If you know me at all you might suspect I have unhealthy obsessions with certain things… running, watermelon, trash TV and MANATEES. I love them.

So I always walk when I pass waterways or over bridges to see if I can spot a manatee. Considering I’ve been to this lil gulf coast city so much I rarely see one so I don’t get my hopes up. But today I saw the circular pattern in the water of a manatee that had just went down under and waited…

as seen on my run 4 (800x450)

I love him.

When I got back I ate oatmeal and a bunch of watermelon and grapes.

I also had some quiche that Ben’s mom made. She was gone when I got back but I spotted a cookbook book open to the recipe.

This cookbook is obviously old and doesn’t have the cover anymore so I don’t know the title of it, but it’s kind of the cutest thing. The recipes are all credited to women under their married names – which I never never see. It’s from a very different time for sure.

I rarely use cookbooks and usually get recipe ideas from other blogs or websites or the Food Network. Also, a big majority of the things I make are from foods I have known how to cook for a long time either from family or friends – I think that makes up a majority of my cooking.

But I have been thinking about buying  a vegetarian cookbook just to flip through to be inspiration and ideas so I can change my diet to a more meatless one (or less meatfull one?).

Anyway. I looked on Amazon and the site told me I have already bought Peas and Thank You years ago! Ha! I totally forgot.

I guess I should bust it out and start cookin’!

Question: Where do you find recipes? Do you try to make new things or just cook what you know?

I really love Smitten Kitchen. Deb’s photos and writing style inspire me to be a better cook. I also like Oh My Veggies.

That sure is a dark, shelly beach, where in Florida are you? My mom has some old cookbooks like that.
I make up a lot of recipes myself or find one online and adapt it to my tastes.

I get a lot of recipes online but will say I bought the Oh She Glows cookbook and it’s AMAZING as well as The Plant Power Way by Rich Roll and Julie Piatt. Actually go buy that one right now – it’s like a coffee table book it’s so pretty!

I love trying new recipes on the weekend but during the workweek it’s easy stand-by stuff or leftovers!

I make a lot of mish mash things with no recipe. So far it has worked for meals. Just not for desserts. Luckily my friend is a baker so she sends me her recipes. 🙂

I highly recommend this Deborah Madison’s “Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone”. It has easy-to-follow recipes for EVERY vegetable imaginable, and includes lots of staple recipes like vinaigrettes and basic ideas for roasted veg and salads. I’ve been using it for about 10 years, and it never leaves the kitchen counter. http://www.amazon.com/Vegetarian-Cooking-Everyone-Deborah-Madison/dp/0767927478

I have a few cookbooks but with all the online options I usually refer to that. I’ve been in a cooking rut lately just cooking what I know (which is good) but I want to mix it up. I love getting ideas from other blogs.

I find the most recipes on Pinterest because it’s so easy to search. Anything with fewer than five ingredients usually wins 🙂

The Oh She Glows website and cookbooks are amazing sources for vegan/vegetarian inspiration. In addition, Isa Does It cookbook and her post punk kitchen site are also great options.
