Thursday is supposed to be my new yoga day, but there are no classes that fit in my schedule today. I’m still playing catch up from being gone all weekend on an awesome relay adventure
So, I hit the gym for an early strength session. It was a good one too! I did back and chest and then grabbed a band for lateral walking. I LOVE this exercise for runners because we’re always going –> forward. This helps strengthen your IT Band (remember when I injured mine after the Disney World Marathon!).
I don’t do this too often because I can feel my IT band ache if I do it too much (and that can grow into knee pain!), but I do think lateral moves helped me strengthen this area.
We’re almost out of bread and Ben doesn’t like my favorite bread from Costco so I’m on the hunt for another one.
I am looking for a whole grain bread with around 5 ingredients (per Kath’s suggestion). I think I might hit up the Farmer’s Market tomorrow to see if there’s a local bakery there, but the search is on!
Question: Do you have any good bread suggestions? Where can I get it?
Newlyweds on a Budget says
I think you have a Grower’s Direct near you (they have one in Costa Mesa, and Aliso Viejo) and they sell bread from a local bakery (can’t remember the name!) and it only has like 5 ingredients! I used to buy it but then we moved…
I now buy the organic Costco bread you pictured, but I buy the honey one and it is SO good. have you tried that flavor?
runeatrepeat says
I haven’t tried that flavor, but keep eyeing it! Is it doughy like the other version? I love that, but since Ben doesn’t I’m trying not to buy my fave for now.

american bread sucks, full stop! There is a brand of bread in australia called burgen- it’s based off the european/german ideal of a crap tonne of grains, but manages to be fluffy. I can’t find anything like it in the states 🙁
I think it might even be a sponsor of the Australian biggest loser.
http://www.burgen.com.au/range/soylin.aspx
Water, Wheat Flour, Soy-Lin® (16%) [Kibbled Soy (8%), Linseed (8%)], Wheat Gluten, Wholegrain Kibbled Wheat (4%), Vinegar, Iodised Salt, Cultured Whey, Baker’s Yeast, Milk Solids, Vitamins (Thiamin, Folate).
hmm, NO SUGAR!
runeatrepeat says
Now I really need to go there 😉

I love whole foods birdland bread!!!

Health full bread by Arnold! The 10 grain bread is sooo good, only has 80 calories ,5 g of fiber AND 5 g of protein in each slice!

Ida says
I say buy his and hers bread. Bread freezes well and that way you can both have what you really like.
Alaina says
My absolute favorite bread is a local company called When Pigs Fly. I think they deliver too! http://www.sendbread.com

I’m a Dave’s Killer Bread fan, love the stuff (and eat too much of it, I’m afraid). Too bad Costco there doesn’t carry it, that’s where I was introduced to it here in Washington.
BTW, you should come up and do the Ragnar Northwest Passage relay in July–you’re fast, and teams are always looking for fast runners! It’s my first relay race and I’m SO excited (and scared). I think my nighttime run is going to be one of the longer hard sections . . . ahhh . . .

There was a wonderful bread at CostCo I would always buy …. forgot the name. A huge-huge loaf that seemed to last forever. Hah. Something …. “Inn” …. I liked the taste a lot. It filled you up. Got to find this bread again. Marvelous for grilled cheese + tomato sammies. Anything.
Also, has anyone seen (or purchased) CHIA bread? Positive I saw online a few weeks ago. A nice looking loaf. I want that. Must be super-delicious for toast + unsalted butta!
Can you imagine making french toast with bakery CHIA bread? Yes please.
Excellent topic Monica! We all love our breads!!
Lindsay @ Lindsay's List says
Do you like Ezekial bread??
runeatrepeat says
No, I like good tasting bread.
Okay, I like it a little but I feel like it tastes too healthy for my every day bread.
Marcee says
This bread might be healthy ….. but …… is always as hard as a rock. I bought it once at Trader Joe’s. Not good for kids. They have very simple taste buds.
Gayla says
Do you have a Great Harvest near you? Their bread is amazing, fresh and few ingredients. They grind their own flour. Dakota Bread is my fav!
runeatrepeat says
I have tried and loved GH when I was in MD, but sadly the closest one to me now is 40 miles away.
Sana says
You should come back to MD!

I LOVE the TJ’s 5 grain wheat with the seeds on the outside crust. I go through a loaf a week…alone. (#reasonswhymyweightlossplanfails)

I <3 the Omega-3 seed bread at Fresh & Easy!!!! It's amazing. I eat it every morning with my PB!!
Karoline says
I agree on Dave’s killer
Bread!! My family in Oregon eats it al the time.
Side note.. When you work out at the gym do you often not do cardio along with strength? Do you find strength makes you sweat enough?
runeatrepeat says
I hate cardio at the gym, so I don’t do it. I run more than enough the other days of the week that I choose to skip it 🙂
Charissa says
We make our own from organic wheat….we actually grind the wheat ourselves too…
runeatrepeat says
Do you plow the fields as well?
😉
Charissa says
Haha, oh yes. And weed them by hand.
Mary R. says
I love the idea of you baking your own bread for a blog post! I’m already giggling while I picture it (no offense, lol).
I only eat ezekiel bread. It doesn’t have just 5 ingredients but everything in it is amazing and mostly organic. I got this off their website, http://www.foodforlife.com:
Ezekial 4:9 Sprouted Grain Bread
INGREDIENTS: Organic Sprouted Whole Wheat, Filtered Water, Organic Malted Barley, Organic Sprouted Whole Millet, Organic Sprouted Whole Barley, Organic Sprouted Whole Lentils, Organic Sprouted Whole Soybeans, Organic Sprouted Whole Spelt, Fresh Yeast, Organic Wheat Gluten, Sea Salt.
runeatrepeat says
I’ve tried Ezekial bread and used to eat it all the time, but it’s kinda dry for my liking.
Laura is Undeterrable says
I love Dave’s Killer Bread! I think you can get it at Costco, at least in Oregon. I’ve been to the factory store a few times to get the cheaper day old stuff. So good!
runeatrepeat says
My Costco doesn’t have it 🙁 I’ve been wanting to try it for YEARS!
Ryah says
I love sourdough bread, but I know that’s not the healthiest staple bread. I’ve been looking for a whole wheat bread that actually tastes like something and doesn’t cost like $5 a loaf. No luck so far…
runeatrepeat says
TJ’s has a cracked wheat sourdough that might work for you.
Mary says
i really like alvarado street bakery breads. the essential flax seed one only has 100 calories for 2 slices and is pretty good as far as fiber and protein are concerned. not that you asked for that. haha sorry! they have a bunch of other really good products including some breads that serve as a complete protein. check them out 🙂
p.s. love your blog! you are so funny 🙂
runeatrepeat says
Thanks Mary 🙂
Sarah says
We have spousal bread disagreements too. I like healthy bread (Dave’s Killer bread), he likes gummy white bread. There is no in-between.
I have just resorted to buying “his” and “hers” bread and then freezing half of each so we don’t waste it.
runeatrepeat says
That healthy bread I like is super gummy (that’s why Ben doesn’t like it). Maybe your guy would like it though?
Kate @ ibrokemyumbrella says
I love lateral walking! I did a lot of that at PT after I hurt my IT band too, and it works great
Megan @ Run Like a Grl says
I eat a local bread from a company called “Bread Alone” or I eat TJs whole wheat fiber bread. I love high fiber!
Heather @ Run Eat Play says
I think the bread I buy is Healthy Life. It’s good but I only buy it because it’s only 35 calories a slice!
runeatrepeat says
That bread would never fill me up!
Christin@christinjoyful says
When i’m poor I go for whatever’s on sale that lists whole wheat as the first ingredient, isn’t followed by 1500 other ingredients, and doesn’t say “enriched” anything…but when I’m feelin’ boss (paydays) I usually go for Ezekiel bread 🙂
Abby @ Change of Pace says
I need to get on my side-steps again, too. My dog freaks when I do them though!
I just found a new favourite bread. My husband doesn’t eat it since it’s not vegan (contains egg), but I kind of like it like that! It means the whole loaf is mine!
Eating as a Path to Yoga says
Ezekiel -OR- what about making your own?! As a vlog experiment??
Christin@christinjoyful says
YES!! It could even be a sort of tribute to “my drunk kitchen”…it would be awesome!!
Colleen @ seecmuse.blogspot.com says
I usually make my own bread, too…. no bread maker needed, and it’s far easier than I was expected it to be!
When I DO buy bread, though, I usually get either the sprouted rye or sprouted whole wheat from Trader Joe’s…minimal processing, minimal ingredients.
(That makes me sound like the Dos Equis man… “I don’t normally eat sliced bread, but when I do…it’s TJ’s.”)
runeatrepeat says
Love that guy 🙂
Catherine says
TJ sprouted rye or sprouted whole wheat is all I eat – it is good and hearty – low overall carb without being cardboard.
Lindsey says
I wish I had a suggestion, I had to start making my own bread because I could not find anything that was decent, healthy and did not taste liek cardboard. Love my bread machine though!
kari @ Running Ricig says
this might not be what you’re looking for, but this is the easiest (seriously 5 minutes) bread recipe ever and it’s sooooo good!

Me too.

I really love Rainer Organic Bakery’s Ezekiel 4:9 bread, its sprouted and contains no flour. Its really hearty and delicious!
Elizabeth says
The only bread I eat is Great Harvest. After the first introduction to this bread, all other breads just are BLAH to me. The Dakota and the 10 grain are so good! And I love how they have specialty breads as well! I hope you have one around you!
Marcee says
We just love GH honey wheat bread! Just really delicious and somewhat unusual tasting. Especially w/any type of nut spreads. Yum.
