Okay okay okay, I have to admit I only made one packet of coffee pot oatmeal so I could get another Starbucks egg white and feta wrap when I made an iced coffee run.
I dropped Ben off at his meeting and headed back to the hotel room to work on some blog stuff. I also had a very exciting call about a new project I’ll be doing with one of my favorite companies (hint: I’m not the head of the Chickpea Lover’s Club for nothing).
Around noon I was about to get kicked out of the hotel so I grabbed my stuff and went to get lunch.
Last time we visited Healdsburg I ate lunch at Big John’s supermarket. They have a decent salad / hot food bar, but it’s expensive (50 cents more than WF!). So, I grabbed a bag of coleslaw so I wouldn’t waste any weight with veggies and made a tray of goodies.
Then, I topped it with the coleslaw and shook it up!
And I’m super busted because I spotted this cookie and had to have it. First, it’s a local company and second the ingredients were impressive and I want to try and make this at home!
It’s REALLY BIG! JustlikeIlikeit.
It’s really thick and the outside was crunchy / crusty, but the inside was chewy. It didn’t taste healthy either. Loved it.
Then, I had to serve a penance for my cookie sin and I took a 2 mile walk around downtown Healdsburg.
I walked from the store to the Downtown Bakery & Creamery to get Ben a treat. The last time we visited he had an amazing almond tart.
There’s no chocolate in this treat, so I’ll pass…
And since I was in the area and all, I figured it was only right to get an iced coffee from The Flying Goat.
Now I’m blogging en route to the airport. It looks like we’re going to miss our flight (!#!@!!). Stress. Hopefully, we’ll be able to catch the last flight back home tonight because I have a busy day tomorrow.
It’s Marathon Monday!!!
Wesley Korir won the Boston Marathon for the men (2:12:40) and Sharon Cherop won the women’s race in 2:31:50.
It’s crazy how hot it was for the Boston Marathon runners today – over 80 degrees! In extreme weather conditions you should make sure and adjust your goals. The winning times this year were significantly slower than in previous years. See? Even the pros slow it down on days like this!
The winners each get $150,000 so I’ve decided to apply for a job as the winner of the Boston Marathon for next year. Can I put you down as a reference? Thanks.

Washington Post: Inexperienced runners encouraged not to run Boston because of the heat. The Boston Athletic Association even said they would defer entry until next year for people – that’s serious stuff.

Heck no I wouldn’t quit after all that training. Nor would I defer. If I put those hours in, I’d be running, no matter what.

i ended up deferring to next year…it was such a bummer..i was so disappointed. im 5 months pregnant though so the risk just wasnt worth it. i wish it could have happened…but i know next yr will be just as awesome.

I ran yesterday and deferring just wasn’t an option for me by choice. I’ve spent so much time training that waiting until next year would just kill me! It made me feel more hardcore completing the race in such extreme conditions. It was so much harder than I was initially expecting and I really had to dig deep (REALLY DEEP) to finish but the most important thing was finishing safely. I give so much credit to the runners who ran yesterday.

I don’t think that there are too many “inexperienced” people that can qualify for Boston!!!!!!

Over 2,000 enter they Boston Marathon by raising money for a charity. But, in addition to inexperienced I should have added “runners not in ideal health” – like those coming off an injury or time off running. Basically, people not in tip-top condition.

It looked BRUTAL out there. Even my Hawaii and AZ friends didn’t enjoy that heat. But after all the training and travel, I would still do it and can’t wait to go next year! I would hope I could just run it for the experience instead of worrying about time though in those conditions. I heard somemone say that about 10% of the runners needed medical attention, which is a little scary though….

I was supposed to run yesterday but an injury halted my training 6 weeks ago and I haven’t run much since then. Given the heat and my injury I took the deferral even though I would have run if they hadn’t offered it. I’m bummed but it was the best decision given the circumstances. I can’t wait to run next year!

While I would not be comfy running in 80 degree weather… I am surprised that that is a scary heat for runners. I would think that people from Texas, etc would be out running in that normally? I’m from the Boston area, and I haven’t heard any horror stories yet, so I sure hope that means everyone made it through OK!

I think part of it is that racing is different from training. Many people carry hydration with them on their long runs, but you have to wait for aid station in a race. And you push yourself more in a race situation – that could be dangerous in super hot conditions (especially if you’re not acclimated to them).

I ran in the Boston Marathon yesterday, but I spent all day Sunday trying to decide if I should defer until next year. It was tough, but I just really slowed it down and drank a lot more than normal. I saw plenty of people on stretchers looking really rough. I hope they are all okay.

I do the same thing at work when I get their salad bar. I bring some of the “base” from home and use the salad bar for fillers lol really cuts down on the $$

In Chicago, the heat got so bad during the marathon they stopped it. Somebody even died. 🙁

I think after all that training, especially if it were a race like Boston, I would still run it. But I would certainly take it easy and not worry about speed, just about finishing. And I’d drink alot of water. Alot.

If I qualified for Boston I would run that race as a victory lap, no matter what the temperature. I would want to enjoy the course and not worry about my time at all.

I would certainly run after all that training and money spent to get there. With that said, I would ease up on my PR and focus on being alive and having fun in the sun! Sheryl Crowe’s Soak Up the Sun would be on my playlist too!

I can’t imagine not running after all of that training but I definitely wouldn’t want to risk injury or health issues. Marathons are way out of my reach at this point. 🙂

That cookie sounds delicious! I LOVE dried fruit and can eat about 10,000 calories worth of it. It’s really hard to imagine running a marathon in the middle of the day in 85 degrees! I’m surprised they didn’t try to start the race earlier? Too big of a race to do that for? Finally, I’m the coffee pot oatmeal queen! 🙂 The worst is when you forget to pack a spoon and you have to try and eat the oatmeal with those little stir sticks they give you!

My friend ran Boston today and finished a full 20 minutes behind his expected time (and he’s definitely not an amateur marathoner – this was his 3rd time doing Boston alone). Said it was the most painful race he’s ever done and wanted to stop at mile 14. I can’t even imagine what was going through the heads of all of those runners today!

I am pretty sure I would run. I think I would have too much excitement and adrenaline. It’s such an accomplishment to qualify! However, I’ve run in some heat before and it’s NOT easy!!
