This weekend I stayed at the San Luis Resort in Galveston, TX. It was right across the street from the beach.
The hotel was really nice, but dated. The décor was a little 80s, but maintained well. It actually reminded me a lot of the place we stay in Florida – touristy, usta be fancy but, laid back.
Added bonus of America: We stayed in the Penthouse level and there was free candy and water in the evenings.
And coffee, pastries, fruit, yogurt and juice in the mornings!
I fell in love with the views from my balcony. Even though I was there for an event this view made me feel like I was on vacation!
I don’t know if it was Spring Break or what, but the pool was poppin all day and night! (People on the lower floors said the music was really loud though.)
I also loved the running route right along the beach. I love to run on vacation, but don’t want to worry about safety or getting lost. I felt fine to run along the sidewalk near the water out and back.
But, I’m busted because I didn’t wear sunblock on Saturday. We were going to a press conference and the expo – both of which I wrongly assumed were inside.
Nope. I was sitting out in the Texas sun for hours and I got sunburnt
I do put on a moisturizer with sunblock when I wear makeup…
But, I don’t put it on my body unless I’m specifically going out in the sun. Writing that just sounds dumb, apparently I didn’t realize the sun is everywhere.
I plan on going out today and getting an “everyday” sunblock. Something lighter with a spf of 15 or so that I can keep on my bathroom sink and put on instead of regular lotion (not that I put on lotion regularly I’m bad about that).
I hate getting sunburnt and know how bad it is for my skin. I want to challenge myself to put on at least a lighter sunblock for day to day wear.
Question: Do you wear sunblock every day?
Jessica says
Where did you get the top you are wearing when you are in front of the water with sunglasses on? I can only see a tiny bit but it looks super cute!
runeatrepeat says
It’s a cotton sundress from Costco. I’m not very fashionable, but it’s great for super hot days!
Denise P. says
I got burnt running in Carlsbad this weekend. It was cold and grey at home – insanely beautiful down there.
I also wear spf moisturizer on my face, but am not so consistent with the body. I still try and front like I am more like my olive-toned Italian daddy, when in reality I probably inherited my white as can be momma’s fair, skin cancer-prone skin. I should know better and everytime I burn I get so made at myself.
Sue says
Just my face because it’s in-built into my BB cream/makeup foundation. I don’t use it on my body because I don’t leave the office mid-day.
Jenn @ Run It My Way says
Looks like you had a fantastic trip – I’d LOVE to be able to run on a beach right now (it snowed in Nova Scotia today. Boo!)
Sorry to hear about the sunburn- kind of impressive that you actually have the outline of your media pass around your neck in sunburn though 🙂 I hope you’re feeling better soon!
runeatrepeat says
Stay warm!
Serena says
I do that too, my face has two layers of spf 15, but the rest of me is unprotected.
Abby @ Change of Pace says
Your weekend sounds so fabulous; it may have even been worth the burn!
I always wear sunscreen on my face, but I only apply to my body if I know I’ll be in the sun for an extended time. However, I do live in Canada (Edmonton) so it’s not like it’s bathing suit, tank top, or shorts weather very often!
Leslie says
I use Neutrogena Ultrasheer dry touch. It was recommended by my dermatologist and I can get it at the grocery store. It’s not sticky or smelly. Good luck!
kalee says
Ouch! Sorry about the sunburn, but the trip looked like it was fun! I wear SPF 15 on my body and 45 on my face (it’s in my moisturizer). I like Vaseline’s SPF 15 Body Lotion. It’s pretty cheap, moisturizing, not smelly, and not too thick. It comes in a green bottle. 🙂
Erika says
No, but I NEED to! I am super pale and I raised on the sunblock.
Looks like a nice vacation to me!! Even the work seemed fun!!
Vanessa says
I almost never wear sunscreen. If I know I am going to Eastern Washington and going to be sitting in the direct sun all day, I might think about it but that’s it. I see skin cancer in my future.
runeatrepeat says
No I see sunscreen in your future!
Vanessa says
Ok, you’re right. Much better and more positive option. 🙂
Marcee says
These days and long summer months, my body does not do well in sun. I can maybe do 10 minutes. No burning skin here.
Very dangerous too. I would definitely advise everyone to protect themselves. Especially eyes and face. Wear caps/hats.
Oh. Love sweet rolls. They are delicious with coffee or hot tea. I could go for a cheese or rasberry.
I am totally convinced you love to travel Monica! Ha.

I have the complexion of a Cullen, so I wear SPF 60 by Anthelios on my face every day. When it’s sunny I spray myself down with Neutrogena dry spray 60 or 100 depending on how much I’m going to be outside. I’m also totally lazy so lotioning up every day would be torture (and boring).
Hope your burn feels better! 🙂
runeatrepeat says
I love that you compare yourself to a Cullen 🙂
Amy says
i made the mistake of not wearing sunscreen last weekend when i did my 20 mile run…i forgot that we live in colorado now and are much closer to the sun..i got SO sunburned i am still peeling. i have a sweet ipod tan, shorts tans, and shirt tan hah..lookin good
Heather @ Run Eat Play says
Hope your sunburn feels better!
I wear sunblock everyday during the summer, but I forget about it in the winter.
Free water and candy?! Awesome!
Becca says
I always have SPF on my face but I never think to put it on the rest of my body unless I am laying on the beach or by the pool. It is something I really need to focus on! I I’m sure having your hotel across from the beach was really nice 🙂
Amber K says
I wish I could, but it makes me break out in a full body rash. I try to just stay out of the sun as much as possible.
Shay @ Whine Less, Breathe More says
I wear it if I know I’m going to be outside for more than 15 minutes.
Megan @ RunningAimlessly says
I wear it everyday on every part exposed to the sun, including the tops of my hands! Sounds obsessive but I’m nearing 30 and starting to think about wrinkles and getting old lady hands 😛
runeatrepeat says
I’ve always had old lady hands with tons of veins. Thanks, mom.
Lizette says
I am terrible about not wearing sunscreen. And I tan in a tanning bed, since we moved to Seattle 6 months ago!
Meg says
I don’t but should!!
Eating as a Path to Yoga says
I use Aveeno Daily SPF 30. I use the neutrogena spray cans for the rest of my body if I’m going to be in the sun.
Alex says
I use Vaseline Intensive Care with SPF in the green bottle for everyday (something stronger and better on my face!). It’s not greasy at all-feels just like regular lotion-and inexpensive. There is also one in a green bottle w/o the SPF so check the label.
Deirdre @ Oh Well Whatever says
Bummer on the burn. I fry within like 5 minutes in the sun. And no, I am bad and don’t put it on all the time. I have the sports spray kind for when I go for a run and that’s it.
Nicole (Apples and Arteries) says
My skin is uber-sensitive and I have had some horrible reactions from chemicals in sunscreens. Even “natural” sunscreens cause issues. I use this Nivea lotion as an everyday lotion – seems to work! http://www.niveausa.com/products/body-care/natural-tone-lotion_local-US
Kaitlyn says
Yes, I must put on sunblock everyday living at 7,200 feet. The sun will scorch you even when you don’t realize it. Because of my olive skin tone I don’t really burn, but rather get “crispy” so it sneaks up on me even more.
Ro @ Eat Live Move says
I don’t wear it everyday but I really should.
My parents live semi-close to Galveston. I didn’t realize how beautiful it was. Sounds like we have to go on a little road trip! Have fun!

Christine @ BookishlyB says
I wear it on my face everyday and if I’m going to spend time in the sun. I had a relative die of melanoma, so I take it semi-seriously. Plus, vanity is definitely an issue- I want decent skin when I’m old.
allpointswhole says
I hate sunburn too!! ouch! Feel better!
Dynamics says
I have a fantastic sunscreen from the dermatologist. I get it in this little pharmacy by my house or the pharmacy guy will order it for me. A little bit goes on and once it dries you cannot even tell you are wearing anything. The kind of sunblock you get at say Target are just too heavy and greasy for me.
Put some Aquaphor on your burn. It is thick so maybe when you are are home. it will make the burn feel so much better and it will heal it faster. You might even get away with no peeling. I swear by that stuff.
Amy says
I agree with Jamie. I tried one (coincidentally, Aveeno) and it smelled like I’d just come from the beach. I don’t mind that smell if I’m AT the beach, but not when I’m going to work.
Lindsey says
I am so bad for not wearing any! And I rarely burn so that doesn’t help me remember. It never gets too hot here so it’d take a lot for me to burn but I should still wear it more often!
Jamie says
let me know what sunblock you find! I’ve tried Lubriderm with SPF 15, but it smells like sunblock & it leaves me feeling greasy. (I don’t want to smell like I laid out on my lunch break when I’m at the office.)If you find one a little lighter, I’d definitely try it out!
Carolyn says
I’m like you. I put it on my face everyday but I don’t put it on my body unless I am going to be out in the sun. So, unfortunately, I end up burned like you every now and then. 🙁
I’ve started keeping a tube of everyday sunblock in lots of places though to help prevent that – in the car, in my purse, etc. Sorta helps.
