After Caitlin asked about “What is a long run?” it got me thinking. I have always thought of runs in terms of distance, but over time my running has gotten a little faster (don’t get all crazy, not much) so I am running the same distance, but less time. I used to run 6 miles on my treadmill 5 days a week. I did 10 minute miles so it took me one hour.
Today I decided to run out 30 minutes and back 3o for a total of 1 hour – and I would just see how far that got me. I ran 6.7 miles – next time I’ll do 7 🙂 I need a new goal!
Breakfast was a new creation…
Chocolate PB Overnight Oats
Last night I put 1/2c oats, 1/2c yogurt, 1/2c soymilk, banana, cinnamon, 1 tsp sugar and 1 heaping tsp of unsweetened cocoa in a tupperware.
This morning I added PB & cereal on top. It was really good, but didn’t change my life. I know this is sac-religious to say, but I think chocolate is kinda weird for breakfast (unless it’s a chocolate protein powder smoothie). Doesn’t it look kinda gross? It was good – I promise!
Question: Do you measure your workouts by distance or time???
jace90 says
i normally measure time cos im running on the treadmil.. wish i could run 5-6milers like u!
Hangry Pants says
That’s interesting. If I’m running, I use distance, but anything else and I use time.
Kristin says
When I run, I HAVE to measure it by distance, since I’m so slow. Otherwise I’d just run less in a fixed amount of time. Unlike you, I do not LOVE running. I wish I did.
Right now I am taking a break from running – my SI joint is inflamed and I need a break from the pounding. So I am focusing on walking super steep stadium stairs at the local college, which makes for a super hard interval training. I do a specific number of sets, then my goal is to do the same # in less time.
Right now I try do to 10 in 20 minutes …. but it takes as long as it takes, really.

I did that chocolate thing to my overnight oats one day and it was DIVINE!!!
I measure my runs by distance now because of the training program I’m using for my 10K. I usually would run for time if I was at the gym and for distance on the trails.

Chocolate at any time of day is ok by me! 😉 I love to make chocolate peppermint oats. I usually always run by distance, but if pressed for time -try to fit a certain distance into a certain time slot.

Wow those oats look fantastic!
brandi says
i think those oats look awesome! but pb makes anything look good 😉
I guess I measure mine in miles most of the time.
janetha says
those oats look so good! hmm on cardio i do 20 minutes of intervals so that is by time, and on weights i just do a specific lifting pattern no matter how long it takes. so my answer is both!

I htink it looks great. the chocolate is what got my attention for sure.

Time. I try to do at least 15 minutes in the AM to wake myself up!

Monica – Thanks for stopping by and the nice comments on my photos yesterday!
To answer your question – I measure by distance. The training plans I use all dictate distance. I know there are plans out there that dictate time, but I haven’t used any of them.
BTW – how is Maryland?
Shannon says
That’s a good question. Generally, I measure my runs by distance, but in the gym, I measure my workouts by time. I never really thought about that distinction.
One quirky thing about me is that regardless of the distance or time of my run, I need to end on a whole number. I can’t run 57 minutes….I want that to be 60. I can’t run 6.9 miles, it has to be 7. I’m weird that way!
Emily (The Experimentarian) says
Wow, awesome speed increase on your runs–that’s fantastic! When I run, I measure my workout by route or distance. When I’m at the gym it’smeasured by time, but more specificallywhat the calorie counter says–bad, I know!
Pam says
Wow, those oats look GREAT!
HeatherBakes says
That makes me sad that you weren’t blown away by the chocolate oats- they LOOK really good.
I’ve always measured by distance. I’m usually following some kind of training plan that specifies how many miles to run per day/week… so I’ve never actually tried running by time instead. Interesting thought.

I’m more about “always finishing” so I go by distance. if I’m really hurting, it’s much more important that I go slow and steady and just make it home running than do it in any time
Melissa says
I kind of switch it up. I think they kind of go together though. If I’m on the treadmill, I’ll give myself goals in time and distance, but outside I know exactly how far I’m going, so I’l try to finish that in a specific amount of time.
Kyle says
I eat chocolate for breakfast most every morning…I’m kind of in a breakfast rut, but I don’t want to change it because I LOVE IT.
I measure by time AND distance. I always go at least 3.1 miles on my runs, but I try to edge my time down…so time counts big for me too. I do about 10 minute miles right now, so hopefully with more repetition and work I can bring that down for my 5k’s. I would LOVE a sub 30:00 5k. I’m just a newb right now.
MelissaNibbles says
Your oatmeal looks yummy. I don’t have cocoa powder, but I have chocolate protein powder. I’m going to try it in my oats tomorrow!
I go for distance when I run, but for time when I use the elliptical trainer.
Karena says
Hm. That’s a good question. I think I measure mostly by distance and then I’ll measure the difficulty by time depending on the distance.
marathonmaiden says
gosh i guess the two are really interwoven. overall i guess distance but i really try to hit paces so my runs take as long as i need them too.
and that looks delicious!
Graze With Me says
I measure my treadmill and bike workouts by distance but I still pay attention to the time. I like to work out for a specific amount of time so I normally try to meet that goal.
I agree, choc oats are not so great for breakfast. They do look good though!
