Happy Weekend time!
Let’s do a quick recap of yesterday first…
I ate this thinkThin bar the company sent me (giveaway coming next week), um it’s delicious.
And a salad, but sometimes you hafta do dessert first
Then, I met up SkinnyRunner for a top secret meeting.
She jammed out of there super fast because my cold is disgusting. Luckily we were right next door to Mother’s Market so I go a Cold Buster drink with carrot juice, ginger, garlic and cayenne. It was surprisingly good!
This drink is the real reason I have orange hair
Finally after blowing my nose 892 times I headed to my brother’s science fair.
Ben showed up too!
Since we were in the area we grabbed Chinese take out with my family. I got the chicken soup, but stole a bunch of Ben’s combo.
Okay, this morning I woke up feeling better, but not 100%. I also did a big ol’ weird dream that my friend Lisa and I were in Vegas – Lisa, up for it?
Anyways, Saturday is my Long Run day. I look forward to this day all week. It’s my special quiet time and I feel super for the rest of the day. I really wanted to get out and do 12 today so I did my pre-run rituals and headed out the door.
A mile in I knew today was not my day. I ran out 3 miles to see if I started to feel better, but decided not to frustrate myself for 2 hours and turn back. I ran 3, walked 3 and went home to eat.
I could have tried to push through and ended up huffing and puffing and cussing at myself for 12 miles, but I knew that today was not going to be a pleasant run and I should try again when I feel better. I’m “babying” myself today and we’ll see how I feel tomorrow.
It’s never easy to turn back home early after you’ve set out for a long run, but sometimes it’s the smart thing to do.
Question: When you’re sick do you “power through” or give yourself time to rest?
Amber K says
Ugh, I hate working out while sick. Since I work out at a gym, I try to stay away. I wouldn’t want to spread it.
Emily says
Congrats to your brother!
Erika - The Teenage Taste says
Congrats to your little brother for winning first place in the science fair. I used to do the same kind of thing when I was in 5th grade and never won.
Life's a Bowl says
I have gotten better over the years but I used to push myself when I was sick which probs got me sicker [or wouldn’t let my body recover]… Now, a light workout still feels good when I’m sick, especially with a cold to ease my achy joins and loosen up the phlegm…
Lisa says
I was home sick for a few days this week with a nasty cold. It’s definitely getting better but I’m taking it easy. It’s mainly above the neck, thankfully, but that doesn’t mean it’s pleasant.
If I am really sick I just take the time off and rest. If it’s just annoying, I power through it.
Serena says
I run when I’m sick, but not if it’s in my chest. I’ve run a chest cold into bronchitis one too many times! Hope you feel better.
Losing Lindy says
I have been suffering with a virus for 6 weeks. Crazy! But I am happy that I haven’t gotten the flu that is going around here.
Feel better soon!
runeatrepeat says
That is a long time! Rest rest rest 🙂
Kathryn says
I had the flu for the first time ever the first week of January. Usually I try to “outrun” it when I feel sickness coming on and usually it works, but it didn’t with this. I couldn’t do anything for 7 days and then took baby steps getting back because I was having a hard time with breathing. It stunk!
Hope you’re back to 100% soon. It’s so frustrating to be sick and not be able to do what you love to do!
The Running Aunt says
I think I have the same cold you do, except it lasted 2 weeks. I thought I was better Monday set out to run 3 miles, got 1.25 miles in and thought I was going to die, I haven’t run since : (. Moral of the story, I’m too big of a wimp to power through. I did go to the doctor and am enjoying some super antibiotics and plan to head out tomorrow.
runeatrepeat says
I need some of those super antibiotics!
Lindsay @ Salt, Sun & Sanity says
The exact same thing happened to me on my run today! I was looking forward to it do much, but once I got put there my body definitely told me there was something wrong. I’m glad that you listened to your body and took the time to let it function the way it should!
Lori Lynn says
I’ve had the Think Thin bars. Love them!
Deirdre @ Oh Well Whatever says
I am a rest kind of girl.
Jenn Staz says
First thing I do is a mental check- is my body ACTUALLY tired or is it a mind block. If it’s the latter- I grumble and moan but try to power through. If it’s truly the former, I rest… it’s important to listen to your body.
carrie bradshaw says
Aww, bless your heart. i’m so proud of you for having the balls to at least attempt your run. i usually rest and am lazy when i’m not feeling well – i’m not good at the powering thru thing.
i love the think think bars. the pb/choc ones are pretty amazing too. oz doesnt have very good “bars” like the usa does.
so cool about your lil bro winning the science fair…and even cooler that you and ben are so awesome and supportive. made me smile!
pls come visit me in oz!!
runeatrepeat says
You know I would love to visit you 🙂 How’s it going down under?
Ricole Runs says
Hope you’re back to 100% soon! And go your brother! First place is amazing! What was his project? Harvard here he comes!
Jordan@almondjay says
I try to rest but I’m stubborn and normally push it when I shouldn’t
Leonor says
If my sickness is from the neck up, I will work out but with less intensity. I don’t have a problem backing off workouts. Our bodies need rest so that we can come back stronger.
Dawn says
Sometimes when I have a cold the fresh air and exercise helps clear up my sinuses. When I am really worn down though, I cut it short or stay home and rest. I think that you did the right thing by taking it easy.
LeighAnn says
I felt the same way this morning. I wasn’t feeling sick, so I do have the excuse. I just wanted to get home right after I left, but pushed myself through it… even with a slower pace… repeating to myself… ‘no matter how slow my pace is… no matter how bad my legs hurt… no matter how sucky this run is… I’m thankful I CAN RUN.
Marcee .... ILLINOIS says
OHHmygosh …. what is the exact name of that orange hot pepper drink? Love to try it. Send instructions pls. The other day I put hot-pepper flake on my oatmeal! Also delicious on vanilla ice-cream, apple pie ….. just realllly yummy!
So great that your lil (Matthew?) bro won in science fair! Wow. You must all be highly proud of that accomplishment. I was tryin to read some of the things that were written on the view-boards …. couldn’t figure it out. Something about tin?
Way to go Monica’s little bro! You are adorable AND very smart too. Just like the sis.
runeatrepeat says
Hi Marcee, I think the drink is called the “Cold Combat” or something like that. I don’t make it myself I just know it has carrot juice, ginger, garlic and cayenne. It’s really good just burns the throat a little.
His project was if water gets hotter in tins of different colors.
Kelsey says
I was sick for about 10 days a couple of weeks ago and am running a marathon on March 4th, I also don’t do the medicine thing. I ‘babied’ myself by still doing my workouts–but on the treadmill. It was cold (highs in the 20’s) with nasty winds for many of those days, and my sickness was from the neck up, so I hit the ‘mill.
When I’m feeling that kind of sick, I feel that exercise helps me feel better, more mentally than physically though.
Katrina says
I actually have had really bad headaches/sinus problems this week and have been feeling blah but I am surprised that I stuck to my running program (even though a few times I almost fell off the treadmill cause my balance seems to be off too!) I hope you feel better soon!
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
I always do a combination of power through and rest because sometimes I feel worse just lying around and letting the cold consume me, yet my body also needs a bit of that in order to get better. I hope you feel better soon! 🙂
Katie says
Congrats to your little brother! How wonderful he won!
Love those think thin crunch bars, the other flavors of those are good too!
Happy Saturday! <3
Lindsay says
I know exactly how you feel. But you know what, you ran 3 which is way more than alot of people are doing today. I’m having my own frusterations….shoved 3.5 Olive Garden breadsticks in my mouth and now i’m REALLYYY not wanting walk, much less run my neighborhood. Part of me feels like my Saturday is ruined, but i’m going to try to get my booty out there and walk and movee onnn!
runeatrepeat says
Those Olive Garden bread sticks get me every time! So good.
Christine @ BookishlyB says
So I take it your not running Surf City tomorrow?
I always intend to workout during sickness but usually I end up taking a lot of walks instead. Feel better!
runeatrepeat says
No, I have to take a knee on this one. Luckily a friend wanted a bib so it worked out for the best. Are you doing it?
Christine @ BookishlyB says
Yup! It’s a good race but the parking is such a pain.
