How to Run in Skagway and Break Your Phone

Travel

28 May

I ran in Alaska again this morning! Traveling through life on foot is the BEST way to explore some place new! (Please note I first wrote ‘life on food’.)

This morning I woke up in Skagway, AK. We docked at 7:15am so that left me plenty of time to run, break my phone and get breakfast before my excursion. Yes, I totally cracked the screen on my phoner. Boo. Let’s start at the beginning…

I woke up super early and opened the curtains to see Smugglers Cove outside of Skagway.

I had plenty of time to get dressed, sip some coffee and wait a bit until we got the all clear from the captain that we could go onshore. Just like I did when I ran in Juneau I stopped and asked a local, “Hey I have no idea where I am or what I’m doing in life, but I want to run. Which direction should I go?”

The nice guy at the tour booth pointed me in the direction of a foot bridge to some trails. This was actually an amazing idea! It was kinda secluded and scary, but also resulted in the more gorgeous views!

And I called my mom and told her I was on this big rock across from the ship. She was able to go out on the balcony and see me!

It was Yakuntania Point. Unfortunately it was less than a mile from the ship so I had to turn around and go in another direction.

I stopped to take some pictures before I turned back. I put my camera up against a small tree growing out of the boulder to use the timer and take a picture. It snapped this and then FELL 5 FEET hitting rocks on the way down. Nooooooo! Luckily it didn’t completely break, but the screen is destroyed. Sad smile

I turned around from there and headed to downtown. It was super super cute! So many little shops. Yes, it was all touristy but still cute and old timey. I ended up running a little over 7 miles in Skagway.

Post-run breakfast!

The next adventure of the day was AMAZING!!! I don’t even know. (Check my Instagram for spoilers.)

It involved a helicopter, but that wasn’t even the best part.

I’ve never broken my phone screen before so I’m sad at myself (not a typo). But I’m super happy I can still use it to capture memories from the trip!

Question: Have you ever busted your phone? Do I have to buy a new phone now or what?

I’m currently sporting a cracked screen on my phone. It’s an iPhone 5s and $129 to fix at the Apple Store and I refuse since I’m due for an upgrade in December and it works fine. I put one of those sticky clear things over it so the cracks wouldn’t cut my fingers and I’m good to go. It’s kind of embarassing but I’d rather spend the money on something else! Sometimes there are kiosks in the mall that fix them a little cheaper than the Apple store.

Your trip looks AMAZING – I love cruises but have not been on an Alaskan one yet. It’s on the bucket list tho!

I’m using a pretty cracked up screened phone right now!! Don’t you love Skagway? I went when I was 7 to visit my cousins, and one cousin goes there with his family every summer and works. So random!! Looks beautiful.

Yep, you’re probably at $100 to replace the screen but that’s much better than the whole phone. And I’ve done the Helicopter tour to the Glacier and it was AMAZING!

I was so good for so long and had never broken or lost a phone, but then last year I got caught in a torrential downpour coming home from the gym (gotta love those East Coast afternoon thunderstorms) and my phone got soaked THROUGH MY BACKPACK! I was so mad but there was nothing they could do so I just bought a new one. Then, not even three months later, I was getting out of a cab and dropped my phone down a storm drain. So then I got another new phone. And then, a few months after that, dropped it on a run and cracked the screen. *facepalm* I’m hoping that I’ve used up all my bad phone karma now…

I know a lot of places like Radio Shack (they still exist in Texas lol), but I’d check online to see if anyone in your area does any freelance phone repair work because it’ll probably be A LOT cheaper!

OMG! I loved Skagway when we were there 9 years ago on our cruise! The Helicopter tour was awesome! We did the one up the the glacier… I still have my bottle of glacier water that I filled up on the mountain!

My daughter has had to have 2 screens replaced. She had a store at the mall do it for $100 each time. The only thing by having someone other than Apple replace it is…..Apple won’t stand behind any thing that may go wrong with the phone in the future because another vendor has tinkered with it.

(she didn’t have Apple insurance and it was more expensive to actually have them do it that is why she went the other route with another guy…..) bummer no matter what!!

I’ve dropped a phone in the toilet and lost one in a snow storm. (ridiculous I know) and I had to buy a new one because my insurance didn’t cover lost or stolen. If you have it insured you should be alright

I cracked my screen the same way as you. Set it up with the timer camera on a ledge. It took a great shot and then boom the wind came and knocked it down. I had insurance that covered one replacement due to cracked glass so I got another phone for free.

If it is Apple and under warranty, you can get the screen replaced. I have one of those otter box cases, thankfully, because yesterday I dropped it hard…and it was ok

Yes, I’ve broken my screen before when it fell out of my stupid hand during a walk! I was also very sad because I like my things clean and perfect… I had to buy a new phone. However, my dad had an iPhone and was able to go to a store and they just replaced the screen only for 90$. It wasn’t affiliated with Apple. Good luck! And AWESOME pictures!

By some actual miracle I haven’t broken my phone yet. It will happen though, and I presume it’s waiting for the least convenient time to do so.

I wish I were on a cruise ship in Alaska. I’m in an office in London. It’s not the same.
