Hello! How’s it going? I’m enjoying running and eating on National Running Day. So far so good!
Recently a rep from Tom’s of Maine contacted me to try their Long Lasting Natural Deodorant. I don’t know if I mentioned it at the time, but I was using Tom’s of Maine for a while last year. In my quest to be healthier and try to help my thyroid I started using a fluoride free toothpaste ( I read that someone with hypothyroid should try to limit their fluoride intake).
Then, my interest in natural toiletries options grew. I started to use an aluminum free deodorant too. I got lazy with it when I ran out and just grabbed whatever was at the store.
But when the people at Tom’s of Maine reached out I decided I should give it a try again.
Truth be told, I was a little hesitant to blog about this since:
A.) I am a runner who sweats A LOT A LOT. And I don’t want to steer my fellow sweaty peeps wrong.
B.) I’m pretty sure I stink, but I don’t really have a lot of close peeps around to tell me for sure.
I do know my food stinks though. Yesterday I left to take a walk after making roasted broccoli and eggs and when I walked into my condo I was like, ‘What the heck are you doing in here?!’ to my cat.
Anyway.
The nice people from Tom’s of Maine (or maybe Tom himself) sent me a variety of their deodorants to try. They have different scents as well as unscented.
Using a natural deodorant like this requires a transition period. You do have to give your body time to adapt AND identify which scent works best with your body chemistry.
I like the way the wild lavender smells in the stick, but for some reason I don’t like the way it smells on my body (this is usual for any perfume though – some bodies just smell different with the exact same scent). I like to smell a little nice so I didn’t like the unscented that much. My favorite was the Natural Powder.
I tested it before and after a run and felt like I smelled fine. But, I do shower after a workout so I didn’t just stay like that all day and wasn’t able to test it hours after a very sweaty run.
Note: This is a deodorant (so you don’t smell) but not an anti-perspirant (so your armpits still get sweaty). If you sweat a lalalalot under your arms you might need an option that is both anti-perspire and anti-odor. I think for long runs or depending on what I’m wearing I’d consider another option.
Overall: I dig that Tom’s of Maine natural deodorant has no aluminum or artificial fragrances . I also dig that there is no animal testing or animal ingredients.
But, it’s not as strong (read: good at covering body odor) as the usual deodorants/antiperspirants. I am curious to wear it during the summer and see if it works in southern California heat.
Check out their Facebook page here.
In other news… I forgot my iced coffee on the top of my car when I got home and didn’t realize until I came out to run an errand. Busted!
Question: On a scale from 1 to 10 how smelly are you right now?
1 = you smell like a beautiful daffodil
10 = you smell like a high school football player’s socks that are stuck to the bottom of his gym bag

It’s totally weird and random, but I use the Crystal Rock deodorant thing, and I can’t get over the fact that even after a longer run, my pits don’t stink! It makes me feel like a total hippie to rub a salt stick all over my pits though, and call it deodorant 😉

Best natural deodorant ever and it works better than regular deodorant- really! My boyfriend even started using it. Jungleman. You can get it on amazon. 4 ingredients and no alcohols. Amazing! Try it! And BTW, best natural sunscreen ever, rated 1 on EWG: Thinkbaby. Also on Amazon. First natural one that really doesn’t have any chemicals and doesn’t make me break out.

As I’m reading this, I would rate myself at a 1 = I smell like a beautiful daffodil. That’s because I woke up, took a shower, sat in the car with the windows open all the way to my desk in an air-conditioned office building. After my run this afternoon I will be at about a 9! I need Tom’s to find a way to control the faucet under my arms! Thanks for all of your amusing posts and product reviews – always a great read.

Well you caught me on a good day bc I showered before bed and am nice and clean this morning. You’re welcome 🙂

Okay funny story – I’m not a hugely heavy sweater but obviously I’m human and sweat when I workout. Yesterday was the last day of school, a busy day and I had to squeeze in two workouts. I totally did not shower in between. I dried off and put on a dress (and some perfume) and went to the ceremony at my kids school. Hee-hee. I got lots of compliments on my dress (because I usually show up in running shorts) and I kept thinking … Oh don’t get too close people because I’m sure I smell. Ha!

As someone who always has sticks of deodorant stashed away in multiple places in her life, I am never sweaty or smelly anymore.

Have you taken a look at Tom’s guide? It’s got an abundance of great information in it and you are definitely right about the fluoride! I remember reading that somewhere in the guide.

I would say a 7. I just ran out of my toms and need to get more. Funny. I use the peach one. It’s nice. Antiperspirant ones work better, but most of them have icky ingredients. I think it’s worth the trade off.

Probably around a 5 ! Id like to think !
Ive never tried an aluminum free stick , but the lavender ones usually work really well . Some organic ranges are expensive but sooo worth it !
Thanks for doing a review though , such a pain Ive spent loads of money on ones I never use !

I’m not that smelly right now. I showered before work, and I’m still fighting off strep, so I didn’t run today, but I’m tempted to try and see how I feel. I will be realllll smelly after that!

3/10 – I just took a walk outside in the feels like 90s. I love Tom’s and I wear it when it’s colder but May – September it’s just too hot and I need the full stuff to wear throughout the day if I’m going to be outside at all.

Tom’s usually gives me major pit rash. I use Kiss My Face Active Life and it’s the best! I’m a suuuuper heavy sweater and do CrossFit and I don’t stink. I put it on 2x/day. After work and before CrossFit.

I love Toms lavender deodorant! I try to use it as often as possible!

6. I ran around like a crazy lady at work today. Probably be a solid 10 after my run tonight.

I’m actually a smelly sweater when I run, so I don’t use unscented deals because I don’t want to smell myself, ya know? I loves Tom’s of Maine products, but struggle with the fact that there is no antiperspirant option since I’m a sweaty person. It works great as a deodorant, but I think I might need a little help with the sweat as well.
Jen @ Quarter Life QB says
Non smelly! But give it an hour. Post run in Charleston humidity is going to be rough….
Michele says
8/10 – Ran 9.5 miles this morning in humidity. Finished 5 hours ago and still haven’t showered. Cleaning the house was more important.

I like to think I’m not very stinky, but I’m not actually around a lot of people. When I worked at Bath and Body Works, a few years ago, my body chemistry made the Warm Vanilla Sugar smell like root beer on me. THAT was weird!
Lauren says
I tried it and found I was smelly mid day while sitting at my desk all day. I switched to Kiss my Face natural rock. For me it’s been a lot better. I do use Toms toothpaste though!
Kelsie says
I tried it and I just can’t do GEL deodorants. I need the powder kind, otherwise my underarms just feel weird and slimy

I love Tom’s! I switched to more natural/organic products a few years ago after reading about how all the nasty chemicals can mess with your endocrine system. I also have hypothyroid disease (Hashimotos) and have been loving Natures Gate toothpase. I’m using a natural deodorant now that I’m not in love with, at all. I’ll have to give Tom’s a shot.
sally @ sweat out the small stuff says
I’m not really that stinky of a sweater BUT my tech fabric running gear gets soo stinky! Stinkier than my own skin.
I’m also a heavy sweater. I honestly don’t think antiperspirants do anything for me anyway because I’m such a heavy sweater. I think Paula (commenter above) might just be on to something. Why try and prevent sweat that comes anyway when that could be poisonus/toxic to us?
Paula says
3/10 – just don’t stick your face in my pits.
I finally got over myself and tried Tom’s deodorant recently. I live in central FL and am a heavy sweat-er, so antiperspirant on just my underarms seems like spitting on a forest fire anyway. Why not give up the part that could maybe be poisoning me? I’m going to finish my stick, but I’m on the fence about continuing. I agree that it doesn’t cover up the odor quite as well, and it also makes my skin kinda rashy – and you’d think that would be the opposite with natural deodorant?! One big plus, though: no weirdo residue stains on your clothes!
