Hello! It’s Pile on the Miles Day 5! Thanksgiving still seems far away, but make it a habit to do something active everyday and stick with it.
So, I found a running coach! I’ll call him Coach J (or maybe CJ?) for now. He is not local so we started with a phone call where he asked me some good questions (after I filled out a form with a lot of info too) and he kinda set me straight on the timeline for my goals (we’re going to need more time to build up than I thought).
Since I’ve NEVER had any formal running coaching and I’ve never really done a marathon training program with real speed work – I have no idea how my body will respond to changing up my running workouts. We’re starting from scratch with everything except long runs. I’ll keep you posted on how it’s going.
My first workout was an easy run plus some drills after my warm-up. I had four moves to do to loosen up. There was marching, skipping, butt kicks and ankle lifts. These are completely normal warm-ups that I’ve seen runners do in high school and before races. But, it was kind of funny to bust out skipping on the middle of the bike path I run. Oh, and the march – I am sure I looked like a weirdo.
Luckily, when you grow up with red hair in a Mexican neighborhood you always look like a weirdo so I’m used to it.
It did go through my head though, “What if my coach is just messing with me having me do random stuff to see if I’ll do it…” Ha! I’ll never know.
Post-run I made eggs and had it with this massive flat bread that Ben brought home from lunch. There was so much left I can’t imagine how big it was to start.
Eggs on the floor, because I’m multi-tasking – stretching, eating, watching TV…
My coffee pot broke the other day. I have no idea how, Ben just realized there was a crack in it. So, I went out in search of a new one.
Since Ben hadn’t been around and I use iced coffee packets most of the time in the summer I hadn’t used the coffee maker in a while. But since it’s slowly getting colder some mornings I want hot coffee. I was thinking about getting this Keurig because I don’t need a full pot of coffee and it also makes hot water. But, my previous coffee maker was super cheap and it worked fine so I’m torn on whether it’s worth it.
If I get the fancy Keurig I can get rid of my tea kettle, which will free up space on the counter. But it’s also $100 more. On the other hand – I don’t make good coffee and I feel like the Keurig is fool proof. Hmmmm.
I hit up Costco to research this very urgent matter (and enjoy some samples).
Fun Monican fact: I usually park far from the entrance to stores because I don’t like to deal with tight parking and or having someone wait for me to leave my spot. It was kind of random that there were tons of open spaces but the person in the black car parked right behind me and super close. They had so much room, but went all the way up to my car and I could barely get my back door up. Ha! Kissing cars.
I also had a dentist appointment because a crown I got a while ago had to be replaced. I feel a little bad that I’m so quiet at the dentist office because I dread it. I’m not mean, I just feel like I’m not talkative and kind of stressed. Do you ever feel like that?
I finally checked my mail and it’s all voter stuff and catalogs I don’t want. It’s hard to tell from the pic but this was a HUGE pile of stuff. It was hard to get all this junk out. How do I stop getting junk mail? There’s one catalog in particular that is so big and takes up my entire mailbox.
Vegas was my date for the night. He isn’t the best conversationalist, but he also lets me dominate the dessert so I’m fine with that.

Boxing workout today, a tough one too!
Girl, just say no to the Keurig. So much trash, so much money for the pods, and they just don’t taste nearly as good as coffee pot coffee. They make little 1-4 mini Mr Coffee pots that are perfect to fill a large mug or travel mug, with no worries about making too much.
Amanda says
I ran 4 miles this afternoon! It’s the longest I’ve run in all of 2016 after a few injuries and just needing a mental break from running. But it feels good to get back into building up to longer distances
Emily says
No running for me today, but I am continuing my one minute plank everyday. One minute is my minimum as I am simultaneously challenging myself to get up to a two minute plank. Wow this month is getting intense with the challenges already. Running tomorrow woot woot!

Shay @ Whine Less, Breathe More says
Today ended up being an unexpected rest day. Not sure what I did to my foot, but my right arch has been killing me since after my hike yesterday. It didn’t hurt at the time, but as soon as I got out of my car at home, I felt it. It hurts to walk and stairs are the absolute worse. I’ve been icing since then with little relief. So frustrating since I didn’t “do” anything to it!
Has anyone else experienced this?

I did a running clinic once with a local physical therapist and we were doing a ton of interesting moves, but they really do help! So I guess what I’m saying is trust the process, however weird it may feel. Also I got three more miles in my running bank for today.
Melissa says
I’m the same way at the dentist — very quiet, not interested in small talk and certainly not an ongoing conversation. I’m at the dentist more than the average person and my focus is on reducing anxiety and trying calming techniques to do so. (It’s easier than one might think to meditate — sorta — in the dentist’s chair!)
Just signed up for your POTM challenge tonight. This was a good week — I ran 1.4 miles which probably doesn’t sound like much. I’m a brand new runner, just finishing up Week 5 of C25K. Week 6 begins tomorrow! Goal for the month is 15 miles.
Mary O says
It’s not 9 p.m. yet on a Saturday but I’m going to bed because I ran 10 miles today and it sucked the late-night life from me.

3 miles today! Wanted to get a longer run in but life didn’t agree! Hopefully tomorrow! It’s started to drop below 40 some mornings so it’s been a bit harder to get out of bed! This challenge came at the perfect time to keep me on track!
Rachelle says
I ran 7 hilly and windy miles. But the weather was GORGEOUS so it was great! My running week goes from Monday-Sunday, so I am right on track to crush my goal of 25 miles this week.
And I say go for the Keurig. Best invention EVER!!!!! 🙂
Nick Wright says
Today’s run was interval training for my upcoming 10k!
Two times 2 miles at 10k pace with 10 minute rest in between.
I was aiming for a 9:30 per mile. But at that pace I was still in zone 3 heartrate. So I upped it a little at a time till I was smack in the middle of zone 4.
I averaged 9:09 the first two miles and 9:18 the second. I am so stoked. I can’t hardly believe I can run that fast for that long (I just started running a year and a half ago).
Michelle Austin says
4. 5 miles on a sunny November morning. 70° in Wisconsin!

Melissa H. says

You are having bad luck with coffee machines this week. Get the Keurig. It’s worth its weight in gold. One of my top ten favorite things I own. It’ll be interesting to watch your progress with a coach. I did 3 miles. My legs were very tired.

My week did not go as planned at all. My treadmill is slowly dying and that is no good as we start into winter. It came to a complete stop when I got the speed up to 5.5, I am surprised I did not fall!! Looking to get more miles in maybe at a much slower speed 🙂
Kendra Jones says

Elena says
Just 3 miles today – I have my last long run before my half tomorrow then taper!
I had a kuerig before and wouldn’t get it again. Two reasons: 1) I heard they can get really gross in side (like moldy in the piping or something) and 2) the plastic things are bad for the environment. We ended up getting the filter so we wouldn’t use a plastic K-Cup all the time but the mold thing still freaked me out and now we have a Chemex which I love!
Elena says
*inside – not “in side” – duh!
Caroline says

Katie Talbot says
Strength training and some abs. This challenge has been a great way to get back into working out after being injured this summer.
Cheryl says
I broke my own record for running distance. ..5.36 miles. It Doesn’t seem like a lot compared to other people but I only started running a little over a year ago, and I smoked the majority of the past 25 years so I’m happy with the distance. My sister in law wants me to run our local 15k this summer but we’ll see if I can get up to that distance (and if she cares that I’ll be sloooooooooooooooooow lol)
Mary Hauser says
Got a nice long run in today and totally killed my weekly goal! Onward!
Amy Wilfong says
Today is a 3mi treadmill day. I actually look forward to the treadmill now because it’s the only time I allow myself to watch Once Upon a Time.

5 miles before work :)) first day with new saucony running shoes ☺️
Elizabeth H. says
Ran 7 miles this morning. This week didn’t go quite as planned, mostly due to a late night watching the World Series, but I think next week workouts will get back on track. (Also, I’ve had a Keurig for about 3 years now and LOVE it. So easy, the coffee is good, and there are a lot of fun varieties to try.)
Amy Ramos says
I was going to go to OTF this morning but I have an ingrown toenail that needs to be removed so may need to chill on the workouts for a few days.
I can always do upper body workouts or yoga!
Ashlee says
I love that last quote – I try to remind myself always that “have to” or “should” need to be replaced with verbs that remind you YOU’RE IN CONTROL! Don’t be a victim! Also, I use a Keurig and find it to be amazing. I know it’s not super “green” because K-cups are pretty non-environmentally friendly.. I keep thinking they’ve got to come up with a more eco-friendly k-cup situation soon.. Maybe there is one and I just don’t know about it?
Off for my morning run!
Amy says
They sell a refillable cup. It’s more economical and better for the environment, but it ruins the convenience of it for me, so I don’t use my refillable cup.
Jodi f says
I ran 8.8 this morning , I was only supposed to do 8 oops lol. This week went great
Richard Wall says
I did 18 miles today (mostly in the dark with a head lamp). I have 50.1 miles for the week. I ran past a 5k that was just ab out to start. They probably were wondering why I was running by.
Jennifer says
This week has gone really well. My goal is to get 10,000 steps each day. This is hard for me if it’s a rest day from running. I have been focusing on getting more little walks in throughout the day. So far so good:-)

Carol Thumma says
Heading out for morning run. Don’t know how many miles I will do. Just gonna run.
