Meatless Mondays Controversy

Uncategorized

20 Oct

A Baltimore area school is serving Meatless lunches on Mondays. It is in effort to save money, but it’s causing a lot of backlash from the meat industry. CNN covered it today – this is a 3 minute piece. I think it is ridiculous that they mention that the kids are getting vegetarian chili for lunch and question if they are getting enough protein! Hello, beans have protein – that dish is probably protein packed!

I am recommitting to Meatless Mondays and my pescatarian lifestyle 🙂 I fell off the wagon a bit when I went home, not because of pressure, but because I just wanted to eat what I wanted and eat things that felt like “home”. I’m going to be posting more easy recipes for healthy, meatless dinners. For some reason this story just pumped me up!

My lunch did contain meat, in the form of tuna (pescatarian = eats fish) . IMG_1886

I had a tuna wrap, grapes and an apple. A little heavy on the fruit today! IMG_1883

Today is a gorgeous day and I am in such a good mood! I think it just proves this girl needs 8 hours of sleep to feel best – I am going to make a commitment to get 8 hours everynight until the Marathon (Jan. 10). I know this won’t always happen, but I will try as much as possible to get to bed “on time”.

Question: Do you have a “bed time”? How many hours of sleep do you shoot for each night?

I get 8 hours of sleep and always have a snack before bed! I usually just make protein ice cream 😀

I aim for going to bed at 9:30 and waking up at 5:30. If I’m lucky I’m in bed reading before 9:30. I’ve found that having a bedtime routine is just as important as having a morning routine.

What’s wrong with teaching kids that meat is expensive and not always necessary for a healthy and well-balanced meal? I see nothing wrong with that! As long as the school is providing them a healthy and nutritionally sound meal, who cares?

I always aim for 8 hours. It doesn’t take much less than that to release my inner cranky monster. I try to hit the sack by 10:30 at night at the latest since my alarm is going off at 6:30 the next morning.

My body goes into shut down mode about 9 and we go to bed arounf 10-10:30. If I am feeling Crazy, we might stay up until 11!!
I’m usually wide awake by 6-6:15 naturally.

I think eating more vegetarian meals is a great thing for the environment and great for our bodies, as long as plan well. Beans are definitely a great source of protein!
Just voted for you for the Sam-e thing 🙂

I try to have comp off at 10:15, lights at 10:30, and start trying to sleep by 11. That gives me 7 1/2 – 8 hours of sleep

my school is drastically cutting out meat from it’s meals too in order to save $$ which is ridiculous considering how much I pay to go here. ugh

my body *needs* 9 hours. but i never get that. so i aim to be off my feet (ie reading in bed or something) for at least 8 but only 6 of them are sleepy time 🙁

You are in the best mood today, I can feel the happy vibrations coming through the computer and onto me! It’s contagious. I think meatless Monday’s are a great idea. Kids should be exposed to different types of food and school lunches. You can only eat so many meat surprises and chicken nuggets.

My bed time is 10ish. I start winding down and getting ready for bed at 10 and am usually under the covers by 10:30. Then I read for a bit, fall asleep and 7.5 hours later I wake up 🙂

Good question! For all intensive purposes, I will say 11 p.m. Sometimes it’s 10, sometimes it’s midnight. Most of the time it’s 11 on the dot.
