I am reading Naturally Thin and am really liking it! Yesterday I got to a section in the book where you fill in things about your eating habits, food preferences and food philosophy.
That last one stopped me in my tracks. I mean, I have a food blog, I have very strong views on food issues, yet I haven’t voiced my “food philosophy”.
*Because I’m a runner I think food is fuel.
*Because I have a history of binge eating, emotional eating and defining myself based on the scale and size of my clothes – I also think food can be frustrating and overwhelming.
Thus, it’s hard for me to wrap up my Food Philosophy in a tidy little package for the blog, or more importantly – for myself.
So, I broke it down:
1. I like food. I like to cook. I like to eat delicious food.
2. I prefer food that makes me feel good. I want to run faster, jump higher, have more energy and I want foods that help me with that.
3. Too much sugar makes me feel like crap. I am against factory farming.
Ultimately, I whole heartedly agree with Pollen’s eat “mostly plants” view.
My food philosophy today: “Food is fuel and should taste good AND make you feel good. I eat healthy, whole foods 80% of the time; fun stuff 20%.”
I think I change this a bit as I go along, but really try to be healthy most of the time – and stick to my guns about not eating things that make me feel like crap or don’t taste good.
Run: I started the day with a 4 mile run. I cut it short because I want to hit up Kickboxing today. I haven’t figured out how I’m going to balance my running schedule with KB yet, so today I will try to do both!
Do you ever do two workouts a day? If so, why?
I don’t think it’s the best idea for me, but I love running and KB so much right now!!
Breakfast: I made an Ezekiel muffin with almond butter/ ICBNB with stevia and cinnamon for breakfast.
What’s Your Food Philosophy???

I wanted to compose you the little bit of remark in order to thank you very much yet again for your personal extraordinary basics you have contributed in this case. It is quite strangely generous with you to present freely what exactly most of us might have offered for sale for an e book to help make some bucks for their own end, chiefly considering that you might well have done it if you ever desired. The advice as well worked to become fantastic way to be sure that many people have similar desire similar to my personal own to grasp a good deal more related to this matter. I believe there are a lot more enjoyable situations in the future for individuals that browse through your website.

I am trying to follow Michael Pollan’s advice and ‘eat mostly plants’ as well as some of his other recommendations, such as avoiding foods with ingredients I can’t pronounce. I am finding it difficult, but it’s also a fun challenge. I’m trying to to document my experience on my blog to stay motivated!

Love the 80/20! It’s funny how hard it can be to voice a “food philosophy”… it seems so loaded, especially when food is a really important thing to you. I just started blogging and tried to post my philosophy here:
http://pancakesandpostcards.com/2010/03/pancakes-101-or-what%C2%B4s-up-with-the-food-blog/
but in reality it was really hard and i already find it inaccurate!!! i think i am going for 80% healthy, 20% not, but making sure to choose my fun food to be exciting things that are worth it… and ditching the guilt. it doesn’t help at all!
i love your blog monica! thanks for sharing!

Thats exactly what I try to do 80% clean and 20% fun..on weekends. I like to do 2 workouts in a day. I try to get up and do Yoga in the am and then running or cardio after work.
Jaimers says
I would definitely work out two times in one day, but probably two different types of workouts. Maybe one for fitness and one for fun. Or strength training in the morning and cardio at night. I can’t imagine having the time for two workouts, though!
OH! You’re my new favorite blogger fyi

I love Bethenny but I heard mixed reviews about her book. I am still trying to figure out my food philosophy but the healthier I eat the better I feel 🙂 I don’t do two a days, but I do take more than one class a lot.. gotta get my moneys worth!
Lauren @ A Fit Foodie says
I am actually in the midst of re-reading her book from when I bought it last year! It’s pretty amazing in the fact that it’s simple and easy rules to apply to each of our lives. I love it. I think it’s a great book to read again and again just for reminders of how we’re supposed to treat food. It does not control us, we control it and I often forget that thinking that it might be my last time to eat french fries and then over indulge! Crazy how our minds get to thinking. Fun to see another blogger reading it too!!
Holly @ Greek Yogurt & Apple Slices says
I love doing two a day workouts, but it is hard to do them a lot because work kind of gets in the way– booo!! 🙁
I was wondering about that book- I like Betheny- I watch her on Housewives of NY, but I didn’t know how she would be as an author!
And, I agree with you on food philosophy- everything is fuel! I can’t say I always eat perfectly, but I try to do my best 🙂

wow, great question. i have never really thought about it that way and have no idea what my food philsophy is. i guess i would say i’m about 80/20 as well with healthy/junk.
as i’m recovering from compulsive overeating, with over two years of being binge-free under my belt, i am finally learning that food is for nourishing my body, not to stuff down feelings and my past.
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
food should be fun to eat, enjoy, share, and should be eaten in moderation. I love food and believe that it’s such an integral part of life, and therefore should be treated with respect!
i workout several times a day, mainly because I’m not willing to wake up at 4 to workout before the day starts and I don’t have a decent amount of time to dedicate to it the rest of the day. it’s hard, but at the same time i know i have something to look forward to!
Melodie says
I am exercising twice a day now, but the second one is very low impact. And… I am doing it for my hubby. He needs to lose 100- 120 pounds and will not work out by huimself, but cannot keep up with me. So, 4 or 5 nights a we kk I work out with him, but keep it simple!
Catherine says
I think 2 workouts in a day can be awesome! As long as you’re not overworking the same muscle groups, which by running and then kickboxing, you’re not obviously. I like to think of it as if it’s a “brick” workout that triathletes do to train. As long as you’re fueling yourself, there is no harm!
Amanda (Two Boos Who Eat) says
I’ll have to check that book out! I’ve been wanting to read it.
My food philosophy? I enjoy eating food but want to eat healthy for the most part. I want to work on cutting back on the binging. Right now I’m feeling hungry ALL the time. Like a bottomless pit. So I’m working to find what will make that go away. I’m seeing a nutritionist on Wednesday.
I do two workouts sometimes but it usually makes me soo hungry and sore.
runeatrepeat says
Are you drinking enough or getting enough fats? That would be my first guesses.
Denise says
I only do two workouts on Saturday, typically run and bike. As for food, I’m with Erin on “everything in moderation”.
Lisa says
I’ve worked out twice in one day. Usually it’s because I worked out in the morning with no intention of another workout and my plans changed –like going hiking with friends in the afternoon. Yesterday I swam in the AM (like every Sunday) and in the afternoon we ended up going on a long bike ride! Totally unplanned.
Anna says
Hey Monica, love the blog! I’ve never done a two-a-day workout except during swim team when I was younger. I’ve heard that doing two runs a day can substantially help with stamina and pace but I’ve never tried it. Kickboxing classes are awesome though!!
Heather says
i REALLY love your food philosophy. Such a good mindset to have 🙂
Naturally Thin is on my “books to read in 2010” list – any other suggestions?
your blog has been in my reader for quite a while, but in the last few weeks I’ve REALLY started paying more attention to your posts [you’ve been moved to my “tier one: favorite reads” folder 😉 ] I just wanted to let you know that I really appreciate your writing and what you share with your readers! I’m enjoying getting to know you more through your posts!

Heather! Thank you so much – that comment made me smile 🙂

I drafted a post on my food philosophy but never hit publish, it reads pretty similar to yours, especially the 80/20!
I sometimes do two workouts a day, purely cause I can’t always fit all I want into one session!
Kellie says
I work out two times on Mondays. I like to get a run in and a pilates class during the morning and then I take a Lift class at night. I really try not to do that too much because then I get a little obsessive with working out.
Jenny says
If I do, I definetly compensate for it – either food, taking a day off, etc. I can’t wait to hear what you thought about other parts of Bethenny’s book!
Lauren @ Eat, Drink, and Be Hopeful says
I read this book last year and absolutely loved it! It is such a great mindset. I even bought her recipe book. I’m pretty obsessed.
Michelle says
Do you have race plans in the works? Just curious because that does sound like a challenging day of exercise 🙂
Sana says
Just see how you feel! I love taking kickboxing classes, its not even a workout to me because I am having SOOO much fun!
Erin (Travel, Eat, Repeat) says
I really like how you laid it out there. My philosophy pretty much goes along with Michael Pollan’s “eat plants” argument but includes: Everything in moderation, including moderation. Sometimes you just need that second piece of cake. 😉
Ray says
What, no guys weighing in? The blog is great, Monica. Plenty for us here, too.
I love the “everything in moderation, including moderation” philosophy. I dropped 35 lbs. on The Abs Diet, which allows one cheat meal per week. I take full advantage. It’s sensible and healthy with one planned dive off the wagon each week. It’s worked so far.
Two workouts in a day will work for me as long as they’re different in terms of activity and intensity. One heavy strength training workout paired with a lighter cardio session of some kind – maybe an moderate/easy swim for instance.
runeatrepeat says
Yeah, Karla that is exactly why I don’t want to get in the habit of two workouts a day. I really would only do it on Mondays since KB is only M & F and I don’t run Fridays anyways.
We’ll see how I feel tonight – that will determine if I do it again!
Karla says
Thanks for sharing your food philosophy. I don’t think I’ve ever really thought about my own food philosophy but I definitely try to follow the 80/20 rule.
Oh man the last time I did workouts was kind of bad. I’m NOT implying this is the case for you but a few years ago I was really obsessed with exercising. I would literally exercise 7 days a week. One day I missed a work out so the next day I went an hour long spin class and directly after an hour long kickboxing class… pretty sure I ate less than 1500 calories that day too. I’m really glad I’m past that point.
