Hello! Today I’m sharing my morning routine. I got this Ask a Monican question that asks me to cover all the bases of what I do in the morning before a run…
1. What is your morning routine before a run… Not a race, but a run. Like you set an alarm to get out by (insert time), do you put your gear out before? Do you eat breakfast? What do you eat? bathroom habits? we homies, so nothing is TMI. do you prefer to run alone, do you map out your route?
2. I know we should get only one…but you know, its me. With all the runs you do, do you even "train"? I guess if you’re doing back to back… or maybe back, no race, and then race you don’t need to log that many miles. But do you set out on your run to get x amount of miles in? or do you go by feel or time.

Question: What is your morning routine?
What time is your alarm set for?
Do you eat before you workout?
Do you set out your clothes?
Kammie @ Sensual Appeal says
My morning routine doesn’t involve running 😉 I just can’t wake up early to run. I love running in the evenings. It’s a good way for me to unwind after a long day at work. My morning routine involves getting up, picking out an outfit, makeup, and then making my usual coffee with hard boiled eggs 🙂

I’m really enjoying the theme/design of your blog. Do you ever run into any browser compatibility issues?
A few of my blog readers have complained about my website not operating correctly in Explorer but looks great in Safari.
Do you have any ideas to help fix this issue?

I am usually an after work workout person. Not a morning person. But I think that when I got back to work after maternity leave, mornings are the only time I am going to get to myself. So we will see what happens when the twins actually sleep through the night!
Also, I never eat anything before morning workouts. I prefer keeping my stomach from doing any extra work while working out.
I am wondering what time people who get up in the 4 am hour to to bed too! Wow.

Hello there! Do you know if they make any plugins
to assist with SEO? I’m trying to get my blog to rank for some targeted keywords
but I’m not seeing very good gains. If you
know of any please share. Thank you!

Hey I am a morning runner also, 4am , with my group run, I have to have my clothes laid out in the bathroom and shoes, must get a shower in, because I will be a musty mess, if not, and I do a pre-workout mix for a boost at times a do weights afterwards,no food that early. On the weekends, it is on Sunday and depending on the distance I go at 8am and may have to get out earlier now to prep for my first full, due to the heat and humidity. Weekend run, I eat small bowl of oatmeal with peanut butter on long runs that is 10 miles or more… How do I post a pic leaving a message?

Super curious: What time do all you morning people go to bed at night? Have you always been morning people or are you self-trained to be morning people?
Monica says
During the summer, I do morning runs before it gets really hot outside. I set my alarm for 6:45, and then right when I wake up I drink a glass of water and a cup of Greek yogurt. I put my running stuff out the night before, because it takes me a little while to wake up, and I like to be on a run before I actually think about going back to bed. When I get back, I take a shower and eat a full breakfast. Most days I am a morning person…
Monica @ The Hot Mess Express says
BLARGH!!!! NOT A MORNING PERSON! But really trying to be as that seems what the grown ups do.
Angela says
I am NOT a morning person (guess I am going against the running grain here). I have the best of intentions every night and set my alarm for extra early because I truly do love to get in a good run before work. However….that alarm goes off and snooze, snooze, snooze. On the weekends, I have a hard time hitting the pavement before 9. Either way….I have a banana smothered in almond butter before a long run. I’ll actually get out of bed about 1 hour – 2 hours before the run to inhale this and then go back to sleep hahaha. Sometimes I actually sleep in my running clothes so I can just roll out of bed and go. Before a race, I will lay out clothes and gear.
Caitlin @ Happy 'n' Hungry says
On a typical day, I get up at 5 a.m., get dressed in my running/workout gear and either hit the road or the gym by 5:30. I usually don’t eat anything if my morning run is under 6 miles. Anything over that amount, I’ll eat a half of a banana or something similar. If I’m going to spin class or doing some weightlifting, I may eat something a bit more substantial like a bar or a piece of toast with nut butter.
I always set out my workout clothes. Firstly, because it’s more motivating. Secondly, so I’m not stumbling around in the dark, flipping on overhead lights and waking my still-slumbering husband. 🙂
Tara says
love morning workouts! I usually dont lay out my clothes but know what I will wear so I can just grab them. I like to have a slice of bread/toast w/pb and chia seeds before any run/workout. I will get too dizzy if I dont eat.
Lisa @ Running out of Wine says
My alarm time depends on how long I plan on running for. It usually between 4:45 and 5:45. I drink some coffee, eat a little (usually a honey stinger waffle), do some core work/warm- up, and get out the door!
Livi says
I have a hard time eating before a workout when I first get up, but if it’s going to be a long workout I try to eat a banana or some toast!

Morning forever! 4:40 alarm goes off, eat an homade muffin on way to run site..30 minute drive(if we are talking a weekday) and set out clothes the night before. Im out of the house in less than 10 minutes after waking up.
Cassy @ On The Inside says
This is kind of weird, but I’ve been sleeping in my workout clothes the night before so I’m ready to go in the morning. I realized it took me like 3x as long to get dressed in the mornings because I was feeling so tired and sluggish. So it helps to get me out the door quicker in the mornings.
Sara @ LovingOnTheRun says
I usually get up the same time every morning, put on my running clothes, stretch and get out the door! It really depends on my schedule but that is at least how I like to start my mornings most days.
Sue says
Morning person as well – I usually get up at 4-4:15 am, get my Buteyko breathing done before heading out for a run or the gym for my workout. Can’t eat anything before a run/workout else, it’ll be puke-fest.
Sam says
You totally preach the truth about runners and porta-potties. I’m also an early morning, loner-runner. I treasure my me-time out on the road. My alarm is set for 4:52, because clearly that extra 2 minutes of sleep is CRUCIAL, and 4:55 would be WAY too late. Or maybe I’m just O.C.D.
The Silent Assassin says
Thank you. It’s nice to see how the celebs live. I was just wondering because you did that back to back and I was just amazed… plus you always like to go around 10 miles. And I do map out the runs especially if it’s group runs. I like to stash water for the runners. When I’m in OC in july, I wanna “borrow” one of your routes. The one where it looks like you’re running between the mountains ..or maybe you’ll get in a run with me… thanks again! I feel special!

I KNEW it was your question for the VLOG when she said TMI and homies. LOL!
Anne says
I, too, would love to “borrow” your route between the mountains. Any chance you’ll share that?

You are hilarious. I just met several other bloggers at an event recently and quite a few (not all) did not have personalities. It made me wonder if all bloggers were generally are introverts. In definitely a morning workout person. I have to be it’s too hot in AZ to go later.
Chelsea @ TableForOne says
I am such a morning person too! I typically wake up at 6am everyday. I love getting my day started on the right foot and then I am much more productive during the rest of the day. I used to lay out my clothes the night before, but I don’t do that anymore. My goal is just to make it out the door before my body wakes up and realizes what I am doing!
Sally @ sweat out the small stuff says
I am not a morning person. Luckily of the four days I run three of those are days I don’t work (thursdays, Saturday and Sundays ) so unless I am meeting friends or I have to avoid hot summer temps I’ll go out at 10am. I don’t lay out anything unless it’s to meet friends for a long run on the weekend. Basically if I have to get up before 6am I lay out my gear. Lol.
I usually go with a waffle or soft pretzel before a run. And always have coffee.
Tomorrow it’s going to be hot and humid so I’ll probably go out at 7am instead of 10am (biking though).
Vegas stole the show at the end. So cute.
Anna @ That DAMM Runner says
On weekday running mornings: My alarm is set for 5 am (that changed from 4:40 in the regular works hours). Now I’m on summer hours but I like to run extra early because of the heat. I don’t eat breakfast first, and I set out my clothes. On weekends it all varies. Sometimes I go out before breakfast, sometimes not, sometimes I set my alarm super early, sometimes not…
Natalie @ Never Serious Blog says
I’m such a morning person too. My alarm is set for 4:40 during weekdays and I’m usually up between 5 and 7 on the weekends (depending on if I’ve got a run scheduled or if I’m “sleeping in”) and I’ll always have at least a banana or larabar before a run, but that’s usually about all I can handle!
