Only in the last two or so years have I come to embrace my voluptuous posterior. It was a very long road to get here. A road paved with self conscious looks in mirrors and any window reflection I walked by. Iād glance at my butt with embarrassment or distain depending on my mood. Each time the view was the same, but I always hoped it got smaller.
Finally, I have learned to appreciate that no matter what the scale says, or how much I run, my butt will always demand I buy a size 10 pants. And I am okay with that.
Today Ben sent me this ad that embraces the big butt. In the past I would have been offended, but who am I trying to kid? Own it.
(Click here to see it full size.)
I love that booties are celebrated in some parts of society and the media now. I can now be a proud owner instead of an embarrassed victim of my body.
I also have to thank, at least in part, ladies who rock the booty like Kim Kardashian (source)
Despite what I want the scale to say or my Marathon time to be, I have decided to at least own how I am built. Itās a relief to stop fighting my genes and just enjoy my jeans (even if they are a size 10)ā¦

A-ha! I just forwarded that picture to half the girls in my address book (the blessed half!). That’s great, thanks for sharing.

LOVE IT! I don’t know if my booty is big, or my top half is just small, but either way…this sure gives me new perspective on it! Thanks for the GREAT “uplifting” (no pun intended) post!!!!!

Great post Monica! I am happy for you that you are finally starting to embrace your curves!! You ran 13 miles the other day, who gives a crap if you’re a size 10!!! I would KILL to be able to run that far, but injuries have always prevented me from any 1/2 marathon attempt. I am super jealous of your awesome running capabilities! š

Great post, Monica! I think you’re brave for publicly talking about these body image struggles that we all experience. Hope you have a great week! š

Girl, I too only recently embraced my J-Lo-Kardashian-ishness. I’m owning it. Forever, I was trying to make my curvy bod look like Jen Garner, who I worship. As much as I admire her physique, I now embrace my booty-liciousness and simply work hard on creating MY personal best, fitness-wise. More power to the bootie chicks!! š

Awesome post! I’ll remember this the next time I’m having a tough body image day. Thanks for inspiring your readers to have a healthy idea of what a woman should look like.

Love the ad!

I don’t know how anyone can be mad about having a big butt! I would kill for one! Ok, maybe I wouldn’t kill, but I would do something crazy to have a butt that doesn’t have a tailbone sticking out of it preventing prolonged COMFORTABLE sitting, no Spinning, nothing that involves needing padding like filling out jeans!
At least it’s healthy to have it there! Rock it!
Jesse says
You go, girl! I love your blog because you are so real and just honest about working through your struggles just like the rest of us! So glad that you are becoming more comfortable in your own body! All of the images of what women are “supposed” to look like are oppressive to the spirit of women everywhere, and congrats for saying no to that! I want to have children some day, and I want my future daughter to worry about concrete problems in the world and how to fix them (like women who are being raped in the Republic of Congo in the midst of civil war, or homelessness, or AIDS) rather than the shape of her body! Rock it sistah! š

Amen. The ad is kind of awesome. I have always resented my derriere, but I think you’re right. It’s time to stop hating and start appreciatin’.

I love these Nike ads — they have a whole series for other body parts too š Thanks for the great post!

Love this post! Big butts of the world unite! I really do love that ad, and the picture is great. If you don’t like it, kiss it. Awesome. š

I ABSOLUTELY love my big butt!! love it. I think it is sexy and womanly and you should too! There’s a song called Poison and a line in it goes “Never trust a big butt and a smile” …love it!
Carrie @ TV and Dinners says
I love this post so much. I don’t have the “butt” (and wish I did, flat butts are totally overrated) but I will never wear a super small size because I have no waist. It’s been hard to come to terms with this, but I’m getting there.
Own it, girl!
Cate says
That ad is wonderful. I also have a butt shaped like a C. That’s right – just own it!
Karyn says

Yes! I was just thinking this yesterday walking out of Target with stuff piled strategically on my hips. What would I do without them??? š

I have a big booty too and am just learning to embrace it. When I see myself form the side all I can see is a bubble butt. You could serve tea on it. But apparently guys like it. They’ve made it pretty clear.
I bet Ben loves your bum and tells you all the time. Work that ass girl, and just think…they have “wonder jeans” (like the wonder bra) for flat bottomed girls to give them a butt, so big butts are a good thing.
Sarah says
LOVE that ad! It’s wonderful you’re beginning to embrace your curves. My husband sometimes makes comments about my butt, too, and I used to be a little offended, but he means it as a compliment! Our husbands have a much easier time loving our bodies than we do sometimes.
Melinh @ Sweet and Sweat says
I envy women with big butts! Wow that sounds really odd but seriously, I have a body of like a 5 year old. I was my body looked like yours or J Los!

you are a beautiful woman- own it and love it!

Great post! Amen sista!!! š You’ve got to accept and own your gorgessity! You’re a beautiful woman and you should be proud of that.

I WISH I had a good butt. I’m curvy and voluptuous but I have a flat ass. I lost all my weight in my boobs and butts. LOL š
Nicci@NiftyEats says
HAHA, Love the NIke ad, I too have a big butt and have learned to embrace it. Rather have some booty than no booty!!
