I read “Food and Loathing” a few years back, but decided to take it on the road trip this weekend to read it again. The last time I read it I was in therapy for disordered eating (B.E.D. mostly) and I was in a very bad place with it. I don’t know if it affected me as much the first time I read it, but I am still going over so many of the author’s accounts in my head.
The book is based on the author’s (Betsy Lerner) struggles with her weight, dieting and mental illness. The subtitle, “A life measured out in calories” really hits home for me. When she was a child she became convinced that she would be perfect if she lost 30 pounds – that belief stays with her through her teens, college and adult life. I have to admit that I completely understand (and often hold) that belief.
Uh, I hate to admit that I relate so much to someone who is later diagnosed with a mental illness, but I get it. I get her desperation to lose weight and her belief that a number on the scale or a size 6 jeans are all that’s standing between her and happiness.
The book is a very easy read. I would recommend it to anyone who has struggled (or still struggles) with disordered eating or skewed body image. Her perspective is one of an overweight girl/woman and the ups and downs of dieting and her self-esteem. It’s a real account. If you have these issues it’s nice to read that you’re not alone.
Marathon Training: This morning I did an easy 4 miles. They were slow, but cathartic 🙂 I wanted to come home and do some Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred, but my laptop won’t play the DVD. Boo.
Breakfast started with a small bowl of cereal as I was trying to get the DVD to work. Then, this masterpiece…My main meal with a ww bagel with PB&banana and cottage cheese with jam. I also had a handful of trail mix because I was still hungry.
I am off to be productive. See you in a bit! Have a good day 🙂
That post was awesome! I am going to check this blog frequently. Hope you put up new content soon! ^.^b
Spot up for this write-up, I actually feel this fabulous website wants much more consideration. I’ll more likely be again to read a great deal more, thank you for that information.
There is evidently a lot to identify about this. I believe you made various nice points in features also.
I’ve been browsing online more than 3 hours today, yet I never found any interesting article like yours. It is pretty worth enough for me. Personally, if all webmasters and bloggers made good content as you did, the internet will be a lot more useful than ever before.
Dead of Night (1945) easily the best portmanteau film ever made, and bizarrely enough an Ealing Studios production. Four directors involved: Alberto Cavalcanti, Charles Crichton, Basil Dearden and Robert Hamer. Cavalcantis section, The Ventriloquists Dummy, is incredibly creepy and a direct influence on Richard Attenboroughs (also underrated) film Magic starring Anthony Hopkins.
We all may soon witness a miracle , God Bless America, and Mass. Pay attention Washington power and money hungry elected officials, The angry gian is waking up much faster than I thought. You really should have been paying attention to the people rather than ignoring them. We The People are America, not those in D.C. who ignore us. Pay attention, you will soon see the light.
In YouTube video embed script you can also give parameters matching to your wish like width, height or even border colors.
You completed a few good points there. I did a search on the matter and found a good number of people will agree with your blog.
Lindsay – I have read most of Geneen Roth’s books. I credit her with helping me find IE 🙂
I’ll have to check out that book.
That looks like a great book!
I swear you and I are twins (minus that hair color). You should read Breaking Free from Emotional Eating by Geneen Roth. Really good.
I am drooling over that breakfast. It’s two of my favorits combos on my favorite form of carbs.
That sounds like a good book, one I should probably check out.
Traci – that is super sweet. Thank you 🙂
Sorry about your job. It sounds like it was for the best though. For as long as I can remember my mom has always said, “things happen for a reason.” Of course when I was young I would just look at her and grunt. But now I really believe it. I was laid off from my role (company closed) four years ago. I had been at the company for about 5 years. I was comfortable and would probably have stayed forever. Mainly because I was comfortable. I wasn’t challenged. But because I was laid off I landed my current role. Been here as a Corporate Recruiter for 4 years and LOVE it so much. Love what I do, who I work for. Perfect? No nothing is. But I’m happy and feel challenged daily. Best of luck with your search. Remember life is just a book of chapters and you are just onto the next one. Make it a great one! Wishing you the best…
she has depression? interesting maybe i will look into it. sometimes i avoid books on the subject b/c i don’t like it that it becomes ALL that i think about.
cottage cheese w/ jam= brilliant.
I should read that book, thanks for the recommendation.
Also, cottage cheese is awesome 🙂
sounds like an interesting read. that bagel looks great — in fact it looks exactly like my breakfast yesterday 🙂
Rose – thanks 🙂 Love the swoooon!
That is a masterpiece right there, Monica. Swoooon!
Sounds like a great read! I should check that one out. When I was approaching my goal weight (somewhere in the 150s) last year I finally realized that thin doesn’t automatically = happy, and it really threw me for a loop. If only it were that easy! 😉
Good luck with the job searching!
That sounds like a book I would really enjoy. I will have to find it the next time I visit the library. Thanks for posting!
I read that book a while ago and I agree that it’s a good read for people struggling with disordered eating. It helped me figure out some of the issues that led to my disordered eating in the first place. Great book!
Thanks for the book recommendation! I read “Intuitive Eating” a while back and many of those points have stuck with me too.
