Alternate title: I’m changing RER to Jog Eat Repeat…
Last night at fro-yo we debated Roe V. Wade Jogging Versus Running. I guess by Kinesiology rules running means you have both feet off the ground at some point in your stride.
Jogging means you have one foot on the ground.
Standing means both feet on the ground.
Needing the definition of standing means you’re dumb.
Personally I think it’s all bullsht it’s like so many other things in life – YOUR definition is the most important one (and the only one that matters most of the time).
If I followed the above guidelines most of my race pics would seem to imply I do not run.
But, I felt like I was running. Heck, sometimes I felt like I was dying! Especially here:
And I refuse to have “Cause of Death: Jogging” on my Death Certificate. It better say Running or I’m coming back from Heaven (fingers crossed) and haunting all the real runners.
I’m obviously not fast. So I can either ignore this definition or raise my feet off the ground when the race photographer is coming up. I am getting better at this little trick…
That, or I’m just going to crop it so you can’t see. It’s my own damn business anyways, right?
In the end I think “jog” is an old word that doesn’t get used much anymore. Right? To me running is: the word used to describe not walking/faster than walking. But, I am not about to start saying “jog” even if I technically have a long jog on the schedule for tomorrow…
Thoughts?

Thanks so much for providing individuals with an extremely nice opportunity to discover important secrets from this site. It is always so beneficial and jam-packed with a great time for me personally and my office peers to visit the blog more than three times in a week to see the newest things you have got. Not to mention, I’m so certainly contented considering the mind-blowing solutions served by you. Some 4 tips in this article are in fact the most beneficial we have ever had.
Shelly @ Cake is a Food Group says
I agree with so many of these comments! I don’t like to say jogging because I don’t think it does justice to the amount of effort I am putting out.
Mac says
That is a hilarious debate… I’ve never heard those definitions, but makes sense. I pretty much always say running and if someone’s going really fast they’re sprinting (rather than jogging and running).
Julia H. @ The Petite Spiel says
Is it weird that I didn’t even realize it was a possibility for runners to have both their feet of their ground at the same time? I’m probably more of a jogger, then…but we’ll just call me a runner 🙂

I remember I was “running up” a hill, yes a slight incline hill … it was an 8 mile run and I was just not feeling it that day … there were two girls .. young girls 🙂 in their 20s more or less walking steadily, just chatting away.
I remember looking at them, trying to reach them, surpass them, but that hill at that moment felt like Mt. Everest.
I remember startling them as I slowly passed them … and after I quickly apologized for not making my presence known, I said … you probably did not hear me because you are walking faster than I am running … to which they promptly replied … well … at least you are out there running …
Yes … I am a runner … no matter how fast or slow I jog! 😉
Denise says
This guy in my vanpool at work saw me in my workout gear one day at lunch and said “oh did you go out for a jog?”. And internally I’m like NO I ran, because I AM a runner.
I’m very slow but I still “count” it as running. I’ve earned my 5k, 10k and half marathon achievements just as much as any other runner.
Laura @ Backstage Balance says
I love your “Xzibit” – LOL! Your sense of humor is just… so awesome 🙂
I think the jogging vs. running physiological definition is BS, too. I am pretty slow, but know that I didn’t “jog” a marathon. I ran, damnit!
Jessica says
Funny because I was just thinking the same thing about myself. On my super slow runs I always start wondering if I should have named my blog, jogging be skinny. Nice trick though, I’ll have to try in on Thursday when I run the Turkey Trot 10K. 🙂

according to will ferrel it’s a new fad, “jogging, or yogging- it might have a soft j, i’m not sure, but apparently you just run for extended periods of time.”
so i think your cool calling yourself a runner and not a jogger
great (funny) post!
Jessica says
haha Xzibit!
I’m with you, I think YOUR personal definition of walking / jogging / running / flying / leaping etc., is the only one that matters. I’m by no means fast, heck, I’m proud of myself for going 3 miles without walking! And that makes me feel pretty darn good, even if someone thinks I’m a slowbie. 🙂
runeatrepeat says
Good for you! We all have to set our own goals and be proud of our accomplishments 🙂
Heather @ Run Eat Play says
So funny! I didn’t realize that the one foot vs no feet was the difference between running and jogging. Yeah…that definetly makes me a jogger, but that beats being a stander, right?
Mary @ Bites and Bliss says
I agree..running, jogging, it’s all perspective. It’s all faster than sitting!

Curious, Where would sprinting fit into all of this?

I’m not sure, sprinting doesn’t apply to me 🙂

You truly crack me up!
I hate being told I’m just a “jogger” but seriously, I don’t feel confident enough to be called a “runner” so what am I? A wanna-be? Or maybe I just need to suck it up and say that yes, I am a runner…or aspire to be someday!
Ida says
I feel like jogging is an old school term. I think it’s actually pretty hard to go fast without taking both feet off the ground. Those speed walkers at the olympics have mad skills.
Denise S. says
I’m slow and don’t know that any race photos show me with both feet off the ground at once, but I’ve done six half marathons this year, so I’d say I’m a runner, not a jogger. The difference in my mind is a jogger just goes out occasionally and never enters a race; a runner is relatively consistent and does races. In reality it doesn’t matter what you call it as long as you’re out there moving!
Missy says
Oh dear! I think I’m a rogger, like a rocker but cooler, insert double fist pump here. Wait, sometimes I walk/jog does that mean I’m a wogger, kinda like slogger but way cooler. 😉
I think that if you get up and get moving you’re an AWESOME! Forget the labels, who cares.
I’m gonna go think about this, on the couch, with potato chips, you can call me a couch potato. 😉
Christine @ BookishlyB says
I call myself a hardcore jogger sometimes because I am so not fast (I would literally DIE if I tried to maintain your speeds). I think it’s all relative; I am faster than I used to be, and that’s really all I care about, no matter what it’s technically labeled.
runeatrepeat says
Very good view!
Amber K says
I’m glad I’m not the only one who CRACKED up when Xzibit showed up.
I have to agree with other posters, the whole time I was thinking “well maybe I am a jogger then” because I don’t think I have ever “ran” in my life if it is based on that definition. But, I think walking involves one foot off the ground and joggers is just what competitive runners want to call those who can’t run as fast as them.

i’m a RUNNER but have the hardest time getting a race pic to LOOK like it! I mostly look like a power-walker in pics, but i’m placing in age groups so i figure i’m doing okay. Recently got the opportunity to get my pic taken for a lil magazine in our town. Totally planned to concentrate on LIFTING those legs just for the sake of the pic, but when the time came, i got so nervous about what my face should look like (i mean, the magazine is about the town…not me..so i didn’t wanna smile…) that i totally forgot about changing running form. I guess it will look like a pic of a local power walker in our town! 😉
runeatrepeat says
Placing? Sounds like you are definitely rocking those RUNS!
Amanda says
I once heard someone define it as this: if your clothes match you are a jogger. If they don’t match you are a runner. Meaning if you care more about looking cute than getting in a great workout then you are jogging. I always found it amusing since there are definitely some girls like this at my gym!
I also think it’s a term non-runners use to make themselves feel better about not even trying. “Well she didn’t really run the half marathon, she just jogged it.” Same goes for those who use a run walk combo. Who cares if you walked during a race, you still covered all the miles!!
shah'ada @ from 280 to 26.2 says
jogging is a ridiculous word. i am a runner. regardless if i ran my first marathon at an over 11 minute pace that felt like a shuffle even when i was on the course lol. self-definitions are so much more worthy 🙂

yogging:
to run very slowly for extended periods of time.
Brian Fantana: So the team pancake breakfast is tomorrow morning at nine, instead of eight.
Ron Burgundy: Oop… I almost forgot. I won’t be able to make it fellas. Veronica and I trying this new fad called uh, jogging. I believe it’s jogging or yogging. it might be a soft j. I’m not sure but apparently you just run for an extended period of time. It’s supposed to be wild.
— I personally hate the word ‘jogging’. You’re either running or you’re walking. End of story.
runeatrepeat says
LOVE that movie 🙂

HAHAHA! I just choked on my coffee when I scrolled down and saw the picture of XZIBIT! Love him! I sometimes refer to myself as a woggler – walk/jogger. I am not fast by any means but I start and I finish, so that’s what’s important in my books!
Nicole says
I think it is my own effort level that determines if I am running or if I am jogging. Not if my feet are both off the ground at the same time. Some days, I am definitely jogging. Others are running. Some are both.

I don’t use the term jog and I don’t let my friends use the term jog. I don’t think it matters how fast you go, if you’re not walking then you’re running.
I have seen the term Wog from pregnant runners and I must admit I like it. It makes me smile 🙂

Hey there! I just started reading you blog. Love it!
One of my favorite quotes is by Dr. George Sheehan (the dude from Runner’s World) : “The difference between a runner and a jogger is an entry blank.”
MarjieB says
Don’t call yourself a jogger! Remember the famous Bart Yasso quote – “I often hear people say, “I’m not a real runner.’ We’re all runners. Some just run faster than others. I’ve never met a fake runner.” Thanks, Bart. I needed that!
Beth (i run like a girl) says
That’s exactly what I was thinking!
We are ALL runners.
Jogging implies a lack of commitment and not breaking a sweat. It’s not about how fast/slow you go (or how many feet you have off the ground — by that definition ultra runners would be “joggers.” Absurd!)
Elle says
WALKING is having one foot on the ground.
JOGGING doesn’t exist!
runeatrepeat says
I agree – jogging is a myth!
Hallie says
I run slow…like not health blogger slow, but like, “a 30-min 5K sounds impossible” slow. I always say it’s probably technically jogging but going by my perceived effort it SEEMS like running so I call it as such.
Jules says
I’ve never commented, but this had me laughing out loud – as do many of your posts. Just throwing down the “Xzibit” in the middle of the post without any further comment. I think you’re an underrated blogger, that’s fo sho. And I think Xzibit would agree.
runeatrepeat says
Thanks Jules! That’s the nicest comment 🙂
Ashley says
The way I would probably classify it, is based on speed relative to your fast and slow. When I first started ‘running’, going 6.0mph felt pretty speedy, so I considered that running. between 5.3mph-5.8mph was more jogging. Now between 6.0-6.3mph feels like a ‘jog’, not too taxing. Anything over that feels more like a run. But I’m pretty sure there is no evidence to back that theory, nor does it matter. When I talk about the actual exercise itself, it I didn’t walk I was running. So whatever 🙂
Christelle says
You had me laughing this entire post! I did not expect Xibit to pop up there haha. I’ve never used the term jogging, I think it’s old school. When I was training for my first half marathon, my boyfriends sister asked me if I jogged or ran. I thought it was the stupidest question ever, but her definition of the two (jogging = slow, running = fast) are completely different than mine (running = whatever the hell speed your no longer walking at and anything above that) I’m not a fast runner by no means, but I would never say “I just jogged a half marathon” it just sounds wrong….
Kelly @ not so rocky road says
Your comment cracked me up!! I completely agree with your definition!!! 🙂
JM says
I have always wondered the difference! I generally consider myself a jogger all my life bc I would just log a few miles on my own and never race. I think if you train and run races (like the crazy distances of 1/2 and full marathons) you are definitely a runner! But that’s just my opinion 🙂

Georgia says
Okay now.. THAT’s funny. And maybe it is jogging but it’s more than most people can do and I’m so grateful my body is able to move. I mean.. comparison is the thief of joy right? So who cares if other people “technically” are running and you are technically “jogging” (like my random use of quotation marks?). You’re moving and you feel good. Call it flying if you want as long as it gets you out the door and keeps you moving.
Run on sister.
