What To Do When You Are Done Listening to Serial

Fun

15 Jul

Okay. I have to tell you something. I became full on 100% obsessed with the Serial podcast. I started listening to it right before my Alaskan cruise and basically listened to the whole thing over the course of that week. I could not stop.

20150530_140317 (800x600)

When I was done I wasn’t sure what to do with my life. I used to take walks with SkinnyRunner but she ditched me for this tiny person she’s always hanging out with and is probably somewhere in the Alaskan wilderness right now. Selfish.

Anyway. Discovering podcasts opened up a whole new world to me (can anyone think the phrase ‘Whole New World’ and not sing it Disney style?).

whole new world

So, after Serial I started to listen to Undisclosed. That podcast is by the family friend and two other lawyers who have put a lot of work researching the case. Serial told a story. Undisclosed is mostly the facts and analysis.

I found the AV club’s podcasts on the Serial series. That’s okay but doesn’t have that many episodes. It’s basically the staffers discussing their opinions on the latest episode.

Someone also suggested Serial Dynasty, which I’m caught up on now.  I liked it at first, but I feel like it’s a little dramatic and it’s mostly just listener speculation when I’d rather have professionals address the facts. But, since there is a Serial sized hole in my heart I’m going to continue to listen.

What to do when you’re done with Serial (and have listened to it multiple times and really need something)…

Here are the links to all the good stuff:

1. Serial podcast (in case you thought this post was about Cinnamon Toast Crunch or other cereal)

2. Undisclosed podcast – by three laywers & bloggers

3. Serial serial by the AV Club

4. Serial Dynasty by some guy with a great voice for radio in Michigan. He talks about his opinion and listeners write or call in and they chat about it.

5. RER’s Ramblings on Serial. You can listen to me ramble on about all of it… in my head movies. Oh, I just realized I don’t record that. Darn!! I was tempted to start the 100th podcast about Serial today after listening to the dynasty one because I disagreed with some of the info.  But I have no idea how to do that and I’m super busy eating watermelon and not replying to emails.

im not funny but

And now I’m off to listen to more… looking like a weirdo.

I’ve listened to Serial twice now, and now I’m on Undisclosed. I also listen to The Read which is funny on pop culture, and Psychobabble with Tyler Oakley which passes the time when I’m not running with friends!

I loved Serial and am currently listening to Undisclosed. Sometimes, they speak too fast on Undisclosed so I have to listen when I’m on a walk instead of running otherwise I will miss some details. I also like The Extra Mile, This American Life, Criminal and The Moth.

I highly recommend audiobooks. I listen to them when I run and totally zone out (in a good way). Plus, you can pretend you’re well read when all you did was sit around with earbuds in.

I’m a crazy woman and don’t listen to anything when I run! I just never really have. On the treadmill I watch TV for sure, but nothing when I’m outside.

I too, am obsessed with Serial and am also listening to Undisclosed and The Serial Dynasty. I laughed when you wrote that the Serial Dynasty was a little dramatic, I thought I was the only one who thought that! The host has a great radio voice, but it’s so dramatic- I actually start giggling every time he closes the show because it’s so over the top. Check out Crime Writers on Serial, it’s really good. I also like Serially Obsessed, it’s more of a comedy podcast about Serial, but it’s funny to hear them recap everything.

Okay, you have convinced me to listen to Serial! I love audiobooks so much. They are a great way to “read” while you are doing other things. They are especially good to make long drives more bearable. As for other podcasts, I like the Ricky Gervais show and The Nerdist Podcast because they are funny (but I’m always self conscious that I look like a crazy person laughing and running).

I have to admit that when running, I’m into a real interesting 5hr audiobook by Richard Rohr about Letting Go – based on the teachings of St Francis of Assisi. I like listening to Richard Rohr as he makes the whole subject of how humans interpret life, on the whole, and how this seems to be completely at odds with what is healthy for us (and mankind).
Admittedly it’s a bit heavy to go running with but there aren’t many times that I find time to spend listening to one thing for an hour and running seems to be a good time. There are times, though, when I get to a point and think ” sod it, I need motivation” and move to some music instead.
p.s never heard of Serial, here in the UK…….!

I LOVE Podcasts. I was hooked on Serial and I love Undisclosed. My commute is an hour and that is my time to catch up on them. I’ve had to bring my kids with me this week so I haven’t been able to listen and it’s killing me!!

Another good crime Podcast is Sword and Scale. Honestly, I almost stopped listening with the first episode because it seemed a little over the top with the sound effects and stuff, but it’s really great. He has some awesome audio/911 recordings/suspect interviews/media stuff. Really cool.

Try the Slate serial spoiler…interesting conversations on Serial. I also liked crime writers on serial. These are people who write about crimes discussing the case and the podcast. I’m currently listening to undisclosed but it’s boring me when I’m running…I find myself day dreaming about something else and not even comprehending what they are saying.

If you’re looking for good podcasts, here are a few of my favorites: This American Life, Radio Lab, Snap Judgement, Invisibilia and the Moth. I like StoryCorps stories too, but they are really short. Podcasts changed my running life a couple of years ago and I rarely listen to music now that I’ve found them. It keeps me from getting bored on my runs. Check these out!
