13.1 Things About the Southern California Marathon…

Half Marathon· Race Recaps

Race #1 for 2016 is done! I ran the Southern California Half Marathon this morning. It’s a ran I’ve done before. They actually have an eighteen mile race option this year. That’s awesome, but I decided to step down to the half marathon this morning last minute because of this little thing I have called a broken toe. #NoBig

13.1 Things About the Southern California Marathon…

1. It is really cold for SoCal right now so I decided to go with long sleeves. I didn’t bring any throw away gear, but parking for this race is easy peasy so I didn’t have a long walk from my car to the race start.

2. Pre-race rituals… bathroom, hydration, O2 Gold, food and all the supplies I need for the race.

3. I brought my post-race necessities (water, change of clothes, Quest bar, towel, etc) in my new Baggalini bag. (Is that redundant?)

4. The race started right on time. It was super organized and easy to find registration, porta potties and anything else you might need.

5. Good crowd support. A lot of the course is out and back so it makes it easy for people to cheer.

6. Students Run LA and the Kids Run OC were out in droves. I love it! They are both groups that train kids for the LA Marathon and OC Marathon respectively.

7. My legs were sore from the moment I woke up. I guess 5 minutes of weighted squats on Thursday was not enough time to recover.

8. The course is fairly flat with a few rollers. A lot of the course is on the bike path so it’s easy to train for this race right on the course.

9. The race benefits Woodbridge High School athletics, a local high school.

10. I had super heavy lead legs the entire race. This was frustrating. I figured it was because of the squats and limited rest days as of late. It was very discouraging though. But my splits were still decent. My average per mile pace was 8:25

11. Southern California Half Marathon done in 1:50:31

12. Post race refreshments are awesome. There are always so many cookies and treats!

Wow! Great time despite the broken toe! Congrats!!

I ran the Polar Dash Half on Saturday and am jealous of the finish line snacks you guys got! All we had waiting for us were pretzels, granola bars, and beet juice … And I would have much rather had cookies than beet juice 🙂

I’m trying to lose the 6 lbs. I gained during the holidays, so I’ve been really good all weekend with both diet and exercise. Did have my nephew’s 30th birthday party yesterday and that was a lot of fun!

Nice job on your first half of the year! I signed up for my first race of the year this weekend which will be a half marathon on Feb 13. I would love a 1:50ish finish time.

Are those Newtons? I have the Fate and love them and have been contemplating the Gravity. Hokas just beat up my toes. Oh, maybe that’s why you switched?

Great job with heavy legs. I’ve started training again after a stress fracture in my hip and was so happy to go 6 miles today!

Nice to see all the kids out running!

My oldest was training for her first 5K, but was in a wreck the night before NYE. Thankfully, no major injury, but she is not allowed to run yet. She’s pretty bummed and anxious to start training again!

Hope your toe feels better soon!

Cleaned the whole house top to bottom this weekend, and thought about putting the Christmas stuff away. Now I’m resting before cooking dinner and catching up on a little bit of work!

Oh my goodness, the post-race refreshments! I would make myself sick with all those cookies!

I ran with my favorite running group this weekend! They’re about a 45 minute drive from my house, so I don’t see them as much as I would like to.

It’s so gloomy and chilly here in MD. I wish I was in SoCo right now. I just need a house and a job. 🙂

I ran 10 miles after a long month off after my 50 mile ultra. It felt great! This weekend, I also ate homemade, GF & No Added Sugar pizza. I also opened up my Runner’s World Meals on the Run cookbook and made the Chicken Gyros with Cucumber Yogurt Sauce. YUM! Leftovers are for lunch today.

      I ate too many carbs!
Yesterday there was a bagel, potato chips, quesadillas, sushi and ice cream. I blame PMS. 🙁
