Yesterday was a bust. I felt like I was rushing around, but didn’t get anything actually accomplished. Ya know what I mean?
I wrote my last post in the car on the way to the San Francisco airport. I think I would like to live in SF, but Healdsburg felt so far away from civilization.
Our flight from SFO back to Orange County was at 5pm and we got to the airport to return the rental car at 4:16pm. We knew there was no way we were going to make the flight so we hurried, but didn’t run.
By some Christmas miracle there was no line at the check in and no line at security. The Southwest employee told us we’d make it so we went for it! We rushed to the gate and the attendant was waiting for us.
The flight was only 1 hour and 20 minutes so it flew by. <- get it?
I bet part of the reason they waited for us is because there were only 40 people on the flight!
I started to read Barefoot Running (the publisher sent it to me a long time ago). I got barefoot style shoes at Christmas and haven’t committed to them just yet. Hopefully, I start using them more soon!
Ben pointed out that it looks like this guy is heel striking though…
We parked at a hotel across the street from John Wayne and decided we didn’t want to wait for the shuttle. So we ran across the street with all our stuff in a completely legal fashion
There is no food in the house so Ben grabbed Carl’s Jr. and I made this frozen meal the company sent me to try.
This morning I ran 5 miles and came home to a delicious egg sandwich. I’ve been thinking about this sandwich all weekend. Is that weird? Don’t answer that.
Other business: I’m still struggling with my thyroid meds, but am loving the natural supplements. We’ll discuss soon. But if you have a low T-3 thyroid and have it regulated can you email me the meds you’re on?
Question: What do you look most forward back at home when you’re traveling?
I was very happy to be back in my own bed and able to cook up my fave breakfast.

hi! i must confess – i am a silent reader…and have never commented before! i stumbled upon your blog from SR’s site…i’m new to running and will be doing my first 5k in 10 days! (thanks for helping me get off my butt and start running! love your posts!) 🙂
I also suffer from hypothyroidism – but i am not sure what my #’s are…i was diagnosed last year – and started on 25mcg levothyroxine and then switched to 50mcg synthroid. I am interested in the medication you had mentioned in a previous post and will have to ask my doctor if that is right for me. My weight has not changed over the last year….very frustrating! – and i spin/swim at the gym 2-3 times a week..and eat pretty healthy. I need to take a copy of my bloodwork from my dr at my next appointment to do some more research…

Hi Monica,
Long-time reader, new commenter here. I’ve been on thyroid meds for about 5 years and have done the whole gamut: compounded T3, descicated thryoid (natural), straight T3 cytomel, and am now on synthroid and cytomel. I don’t convert T4 to T3 so my T3 is always lower. Recently I went to a naturopath and he checked my iron, which was low. I did some reading and apparently low iron can inhibit the conversion of T4 to T3; I feel more energetic already after a week and a half on iron. Have you had yours checked? Thyroid issues are a PITA, so I feel for ya.
runeatrepeat says
Thanks for chiming in! I’m on compounded cytomel but am not sure it’s enough of a dose.
Rebecca says
Hey Monica,
I’ve read your blog for over a year but never comment, but the tyroid question made me have to comment. I have had a terrible time with my tyroid and have to have it checked all the time to make sure my Meds are correct. I take synthroid but it can’t be the generic as it always messes up my levels.
elizabeth says
I take generic synthroid. I have taken it since 2nd grade when my thryoid stopped working. I take 135 mg per day. That amount varied during pregnancy (I needed more) so be aware of that once that is an issue for you. I am curious what supplements you found that help.
runeatrepeat says
Thanks! My doc immediately mentioned that we’d have to adjust it when I get pregnant so we’ll see…
Losing Lindy says
I am glad you guys made your flight. I would have gone with Ben to Carl’s Jr.
runeatrepeat says
Oh, I totally stole fries.

Hi Kris,
I found out through an allergy test by Metametrix through my doctor. My insurance didn’t cover it so I had to pay for it out of pocket. It was $350. It was an IgG4 food antibody which tests 90 antigens and IgG assay which tests 30 antigens. I’ve been struggling with fatigue, eczema, hair loss and some other symptoms and that’s why I had the test. It doesn’t test for intolerances or sensitivities though. Good luck!!
Jacqui Gonzales says
I take Levoxyl (don’t remember dosage except very low, since I just started medication a few months ago). I felt a lot better initially and overall I still notice more energy, but I haven’t seen the doctor since my original diagnosis (I see him a week from today) so I don’t know how much it’s helping yet.
Jacqui Gonzales says
Oh and my favorite part of coming home? Bed. Far and Away. Only exception is if I go without my husband and kids, then they are my favorite part of coming home. Followed by my bed.
andrea says
My bed for sure!!
And your egg sandwiches you post often always make me crave egg sandwiches!
Jamie says
Long time reader, but one thing I noticed – Yikes! You eat a lot of processed food!
shannon says
I recently found out I’m allergic to eggs and they’re probably one of my favorite things to eat. Your egg looks super yummy!!
shannon says
Oh and I’m sending you an email about the thyroid meds. 🙂
Kris says
Hi Shannon,
Sorry to hear about the eggs! 🙁 How did you find out that you were allergic to eggs? I have recently discovered (through elimination and paying very close attention to how I feel after eating certain foods…) that I am definitely sensitive to dairy, gluten and peanuts.
runeatrepeat says
That is sad 🙁

Kathy R. says
I take 75 MCG of Levothroid, no problems with it.
You probably already know at least some of this, but :
THE most important things to do is to make sure that you take it at the same time every morning.
Wait 30-60 minutes after taking it before eating anything. (I always wait at least an hour).
Wait at least 2 hours before taking any vitamin that has iron in it.
Wait at least 4 hours after taking your thyroid med before taking any of these drugs or supplements:
Aluminum or calcium antacids (Tums, Maalox, etc)
Calcium supplements (can block absorption)
Iron supplements
Also I stay away from soy products (although limiting them to just a few times a week is ok) and also you need to be sure to wait several hours after taking your pill before eating high fiber foods, since they can decrease the absorption of your thyroid meds.
Before I knew that I was eating oatmeal for breakfast.
I don’t know what natural supplements you are taking — but I would be sure to take them several hours after your thyroid pill so you don’t have any interaction going on.
runeatrepeat says
Thanks Kathy!

After I’m traveling the two things I can’t wait to do are take a shower in my own bathroom and sleep in my own bed. There’s nothing like it and I always feel like a million bucks when I first do those things again!
Ida says
I love traveling, but I also love my routine. So coming home is always nice b/c I can get back into my normal patterns.
Amy says
I have Hashimotos thyroiditis (hypothyroid) and was diagnosed about 4 years ago. Initially I took Levothyroxine (75mcg) but I wanted something that wasn’t a synthetic hormone so I switched to Armour Thyroid with the help of my endocrinologist. I take two pills (60mg) and then alternate and take three pills (90mg) the next. I’m currently 5’6″ 125 and I eat paleo and exercise no less than 6 times a week. My issue isn’t the fact that I’ve gained 20 pounds from my onset. My issue is that I continue to feel like I need to sleep 10 hours a day just to function. 😉 I will say I feel that I’ve stabilized more from the armour thyroid. I see an endocrinologist regularly as my thyroid levels continue to remain relatively low functioning.
runeatrepeat says
So, are you eating Paleo to help with your thyroid symptoms? A few people have mentioned staying away from gluten and soy for thyroid issues, but if you’re still tired I don’t wanna do it.
Amy says
Started paleo because of my spouse, wish I could say it was my idea. I think it has definitely helped to alleviate a lot of my symptoms. I can actually function without sleep, albeit I don’t want to. Gluten for me seems to cause inflammation. I’m not a doctor but when I cheat I feel extremely sluggish and tired. I’d suggest limiting your grains, dairy for a few days and take a mental note of how you feel. Hope this helps!
alicia says
I also take Synthroid (75mcg). Works wonders for me, but I am curious to hear what you think. I also felt a million times better during Lent when I only ate meats, veggies, and fruit. I need to do that again.
Jen @ Such a Funny Fat says
We have 2 dogs so if we travel sometimes we have to leave them home (with a dog sitter, not alone) so I’m always happy to come home and see them again.
If we are travelling with the dogs I’m usually happiest to return home because we have a fenced back yard so I can let them out to run around without having to have them on leashes or constantly watching them.
My own pillows are also something that I love meeting again when I come home!
Caity says
I’m also on Synthroid (generic name: Levothyroxine) and take 50 mcg. All of my symptoms and levels have been controlled easily by taking one teeny tiny pill before 30 mins before breakfast every morning. I hate taking pills, but this one is worth it to me.
Amber K says
I’m on two different medications for my thyroid, but it’s not actually regulated yet. I’m actually going back in to the doctor tomorrow to see where my levels are at now. My doctor says I’m one of the tough cases because my body wants to go too far and not far enough all at the same time. I don’t remember whether the T3 or the T4 is the one that is too much, but the other one is too little. Frustrating!
Steph says
I love egg sandwiches and nope it isn’t weird to dream about them! I love my bed! So absolutly my bed. And crazy answer- doing laundry!
Lindsey says
My bed for sure!!
Deirdre @ Oh Well Whatever says
Hope you kids had a great time. I always miss my bed, no matter how great a hotel bed I don’t sleep well away from home. The only exception was The Sofia down in San Diego when we stayed there for my first full marathon – I will stay there again just for that bed. Amazing.
Abby @ Change of Pace says
That’s awesome you caught your flight! I used to be away from home all the time and not miss is, until we got a dog. Now I can’t wait to get home to him!
Nicole (Apples and Arteries) says
I always appreciate coming back to: my own bed, shower, coffee maker (and coffee), and of course, my Guys (dogs!).

I’d love to know what natural supplements you’re taking for your thyroid. I was recently tested for hypothyroid, but fell within the range of normal, even though I have the majority of symptoms. I would still like to give it a natural boost if you have any suggestions.
Marija says
Hi Jen!
I’m the same, I fall within normal range, but still have symptoms. Dr doesn’t want to up my meds, but I’d like a boost myself.
kalli says
i take a natural compounded thyroid medicine made from porcine (pigs). it is supposed to work better with your body since it is natural. you still need to get a prescription from a compunding pharmacy. i take 75 mg.
Amanda @ Pearl-essence says
I love coming home to our dog, a clean house and driving! I rarely drive when I travel so it is weird to get back into the car.

Coming home to my cat ^-^ & sleeping in my own bed.

No that’s not weird! I spent an entire week thinking about the burger that I was going to inhale following my 20 miler last Saturday! It tasted like it came straight from Heaven. Maybe the cook put crack in the meat. LOL! Kidding! I’m sure you understand my humor. I’m ridiculously sarcastic as well!

I’m on generic Synthroid (Levothyroxine). I started with 25 mg (or whatever the units are ) and just got bumped up to 50. I haven’t had any problems with it.
Serena says
People are always saying how book so and so changed their form and how they don’t get injured any more because they are now forefoot strikers. Meanwhile we are running along and they are heal striking right along with me. I feel like I’d hurt myself if I try to change my form. I do wear minimalist shoes though and do quite well.
Jordan@almondjay says
I love coming home to my own bed and being in my own kitchen. It’s fun to eat out when you’re away but it gets old quickly for me and all I want is to whip up a good old favorite recipe or simply stick my finger in the peanut butter jar haha.
Jenn @ Run It My Way says
Let me know what you think of the book – I started barefoot running but I’m still in the transition phase and am only running short distances a few times a week in them. The transition is kind of tedious having to run home and change into them for a few km’s of each run. I feel light and fast in them though!
I like coming home to a) my own bed; and b) my puppy! I always miss her so much when I’m gone and she’s always so happy to see me, it’s the best. It’s weird being away from her and not waking up cuddling with her in the morning 🙂
Claire @ Let's Go On A Living Spree says
Glad you got back safe! And I can’t wait to read more about your experiences with barefoot running. I, too, haven’t committed (or even tried) yet and am still a bit skeptical. I think that minimalist running only prevents injuries because it can promote mid or fore-foot foot strike and proper mechanics. If you’ve been working on that in your regular shoes and do it already, what’s the incentive to change? Looking forward to learning more!!! 🙂
Krissy @ Shiawase Life says
I love egg sandwiches too, so I definitely won’t judge.
I do have to say though – I had this dream last night that I went to school in an unfamiliar city – I was running late to class and the door was locked in front of me because I got there 1 minute late. I was sad, and drove home, but my house was like a ski lodge. When I went inside, I realized I was part of a reality TV show and you lived there, too – but you told me we couldn’t be friends because I was too boring! It was realistic and very sad, hahah!
runeatrepeat says
That is sad, but accurate – I’m totally a bitch in real life.
Kidding!
