Hello! Last week I got a Blue Apron delivery. It was perfect timing since Ben was in town for a little quality time visit. I was able to cook us up a fancy dinner without having to go to the store for a long list of ingredients (the cupboards are pretty bare) AND I didn’t have to plan anything to make! This seriously made my life a lot easier.
I received two dinner kits: Lemon Butter Shrimp and Chicken Drop Biscuit Casserole. I went with the shrimp first since I wanted to make that when the seafood was still fresh.
Blue Apron delivers all the ingredients you need to make two dinners for two people or a family.
I love that it literally comes with everything except salt & pepper from the perfect amount of butter to garlic to cheese.
This means if you need two stalks of celery for a recipe they give you TWO stalks and you don’t have to buy a whole pack that’s just going to go bad in the back of your fridge (says the girl who has wilting cilantro and other randomness in her veggie bin!).
There have been a lot of times when I’ve forgotten to pick up one of the ingredients I need for a recipe and when I go to the store I NEVER just buy one thing. This means I end up spending more money overall.
I don’t usually cook seafood at home. I feel like I don’t really know how? I guess it’s partially because I didn’t grow up watching my mom cook seafood – we were more about the bean burritos and ground beef tacos.
So, I definitely stepped out of my comfort zone cooking the Lemon Butter Shrimp. And it was delicious!
This meal included everything for the shrimp, rice and salad!
The next night I made Chicken and Biscuits casserole (officially it’s Chicken & Drop Biscuit Casserole).
This was stuffed with chicken, carrots, potatoes, celery, mushrooms in a cream sauce.
This was another hit too! And it’s such a comfort food kinda meal.
I loved that this one was something I could recreate. Blue Apron taught me a new recipe.
Overall: Both dishes were delicious and impressive. The only criticism I’ve heard of Blue Apron is the cost. But the reality is piecing together all the ingredients for these meals would be more expensive unless you actually used them all. (The meals are about $8.74 a person.)
Example: The Chicken Biscuit casserole came with the exact amount of cream and flour to make the sauce. If I had to buy a whole container of each that would add up fast (and the extra cream would probably end up in the trash).
Bonus: I think this is a great way to learn to cook something new-to-you OR cook for someone that you’re trying to impress

Question: What’s for dinner at your house?
Can I come over??
Wouldn’t it be funny if I actually went to someone’s house randomly like that? Ha!!

It does look like a great service with yummy food. Yeah, the price is the thing holding me back but there are many people here who can afford it so it’s worth posting!

Both of you are always more than welcome to have dinner with my family 🙂

I won’t try blue apron again until it is more things we eat, We were extremely disappointed. The funny thing is that chicken casserole is the same as the one we had except it was turnips vs. potatoes. Only one of our 6 meals were edible. And next time I make it there will be no sage.

These would be great for when my hubby travels and I only need meals for a couple days. I agree with you on seafood. It would be nice for step-by-step directions on how to cook it. Thanks for sharing!!

That Chicken Drop Biscuit Casserole looks fantastic. My kind of meal! I’m about to have a baby, and I think that trying Blue Apron right around the time the baby comes would be PERFECT.

Congratulations! When are you due?!

Ive been using Blue Apron for a couple months now but there are always 3 meals for 2 people and 2 meals for the family option. Is there a way to only get 2 meals for 2 people? That may be more manageable for us.
Anyway, love Blue Apron!!

I don’t know, but I’ll check on this!

I’m actually thinking of doing something mexican. I even thought I’d try to make empanadas. The boyfriend is coming over for dinner and last week i ordered a pizza so i thought i should probably try to cook. I hope I don’t mess this up. lol.
runeatrepeat says
I’ve never had a homemade empanada! Even though the Mexican places around here are so legit it’s kinda like homemade 🙂

Can you speak to the servings? It looks like there are a lot of servings from the images. Is it truly two adult sized servings?
runeatrepeat says
Hey Zoe, this delivery was actually servings for 4 people. The casserole dish shows the full 4 people serving. I packed up the rest for lunches. Even with it being for 4 people it was a lot of food and good sized portions.

The chicken & biscuit casserole looks like the perfect comfort food. I love finding ways to use up extra ingredients, so that one isn’t quite so much a problem for me, but I love that Blue Apron sends ingredients that people maybe wouldn’t be as likely to use on their own!
Livi @ Eat, Pray, Work It Out says
Looks delicious! And I love your green dress!

Gracias Livi!
