I am crazy for the smell of coconut and vanilla. Mmmmmhmmm.
A while back a company sent me a HUGE jar of coconut oil, but I don’t cook with it very often because you can mildly taste the coconut in dishes (not a fan of that so much). Luckily there are a ton of different uses for coconut outside of cooking! I put a little jar of it on my bathroom counter meaning to use it for lotion, but have been forgetting.
I recently heard it’s a great deep conditioner for your hair.
This morning before my run I slathered some coconut oil on the ends of my hair, wrapped it up and went out for a short run. 3 miles or 30 minutes later, I washed it out. Deep conditioning with no effort! Nice
I don’t feel a big difference in the ends though – I think I have to do it consistently to see better results or leave it in longer. I do want to do it again though! I kinda wish it smelled more like coconut still. Mmmmm.
I can’t remember if I shared this on RER, but I is worth repeating:
Remember that this weekend if you’re racing!

I’ll be running the LA 13.1 Half on Sunday – who’s running with me?!
Question: What are you doing this weekend?
Thoughts on coconut?
Sami says
uhm. that picture of your curls needs to be in a hair magazine stat. gorgeous!
Angela says
I also love all things coconut. I just bought the Organix Coconut Milk shampoo and conditioner. It smells heavenlyyyyyyy! It doesn’t seem to work the best for my hair so I only use it every once in awhile just for the smell.
Kim says
Great quote!! A constant struggle (especially with all of the great feats mentioned on so many blogs!!).
Not a coconut fan but I love the smell of it in tanning oil!!!
Have fun in your half tomorrow!!!
Heather @ Run Eat Play says
Good luck on your half!
runeatrepeat says
Thanks Heather! Hope your brother is feeling better 🙂
Isabel says
I have a jar of coconut oil just sitting here too…saw a bunch of recipes I wanted to try that called for it but not sure about all my food tasting tropical 😉 I have been adding coconut milk to my protein shakes…now that is good especially with a drop or two of coconut extract!
Katie says
I just want your hair! Gorgeous!
Coconut oil I have never used in my hair, but have heard it is great and also on your skin too!
Good luck today!
Sharsti says
Good luck on your run! I’m going to church, a d sound some much needed cleaning:) and of course playing with my lil guy and husband.
Jesse says
Girl, your hair is so pretty! It really is. I hear you on all the hype about coconut oil…I don’t really have a desire to cook with it either. I use some my cousin sent me as facial mousturizer and it is really lovely. I slather it on at night, all over my face, even my eyelids. My skin has never been better in my life. My boyfriend doesn’t like it though, so that it a bummer. I know coconut oil is suppose to be “good” for you but I prefer to get my fats in the form of cookies, or frosting on cake and cake, or peanut butter or almond butter eaten straight from the jar!
Heather says
i have a little container that i keep on my nightstand to put on my hands at night – i have REALLY dry skin and sometimes have outbreaks on my hands but the coconut oil really does work WONDERS!
Susan says
I too love the smell of coconut and vanilla.
I’m going to a baby shower tomorrow morning. Its for a girl at work and I don’t know her or most of the others going very well (our companies just merged) but thought it would be a good way to get to know some of them. But not really a fan of baby showers. I hope to go for a run immediately after. Its actually warm in Indiana right now but they say its going to rain in the evening and then start getting colder again. Weather FAIL!
Bridie says
I actually really enjoy coconut and like cooking with it for the most part. I don’t notice the coconut flavor – the only time I’ve really noticed it is when I used it in place of butter on grilled cheese. But for roasting cauliflower or stir frying veggies it is great! I don’t really like baking with it though, I feel like the end product tastes a little flat or diet-y or something.
Jenny says
Girl, you have gorgeous hair!
Amber K says
Have you heard about the coconut shortage? I read an article about it in Time magazine and I am not looking forward to the huge price increases due to the lowering supply of coconuts. I’m already seeing less varieties of coconut water on the shelves.
I do like coconut oil as a moisturizer and deodorant though! Haven’t tried it as a conditioner, but I’ll have to see if it works with my hair type.
Sue says
Charity run this afternoon and a new-to-me running route with a new-to-me running group (coz I’m outta town). Apart from these, generally chilling out with friends in Singapore.
Noel says
I love coconut – coconut water, coconut flakes, coconut-scented shampoo,… – but am not a huge fan of cooking with coconut oil. This weekend is a tapering weekend. I’m running the Tinkerbell half next weekend and the Surf City half in three weeks. Good luck and have fun in LA!
Summer says
I too use coconut oil as a skin moisturizer.
Bri says
Coconut is my favorite scent! It reminds me of relaxing on the beach. I have the scent all over my house.
Carrie says
I love the TJ coconut oil! Smells awesome. I also use it to make a sugar scrub. I did the coconut oil in my hair the other day. I probably did too much because it took 2 washes to get out. It was so soft and shiney though.
GreenGirlRunning says
I agree about cooking with coconut oil… not a huge fan of the flavor in all dishes. I use it as a hand cream at night!
Gloria says
I just tried this moisturizing shampoo called Curly Wurly from Lush two day ago and really like it! It has coconut oil and actual coconut flakes in it and smells great.
Torontorunner says
Your hair is gorgeous!! How, how, hoooow do people put it up in such gorgeous buns like that??? Jeaaaalous. Gorgeous!

This weekend I’m trying to focus on putting together a new training plan since my friend who was coaching me decided she was too busy… Anyway, good luck with the race.

I am fan of coconut in brownies, cookies, you name it. Except coconut water. It tastes like feet.

I just bought a case from Costco because it was on special and I’d heard so many good things about it – why did all these people lie to me??? I tried to gag down one little carton of it – made sure it was super cold in the fridge and everything and it was the worst.thing.ever
Wendy says
I love that quote! I’ll be running the inaugural Honkers Marathon in Anaheim this weekend. I love coconut but gag on coconut water…it’s just so gross!
Kathy says
I have been adding coconut milk to my protein shakes..Mmmm..wonderful!
I know you have heard it before but…..YOUR HAIR IS SO PRETTY. (My girls hear it a lot too…they have the same color as you but don’t know how to style it as nice yet..haha!)
Christine @ BookishlyB says
We’re making coconut mojitos tonight- does that count?
Good luck in LA!
Alyssa says
I am a sucker for anything coconut and or vanilla. I bake with it and use it in my shakes. Good luck in your race!
Karen @ Runner Girl Eats says
Yum coconut is one of the best smells ever. I like to dose my hair with deep conditioner while laying by the pool but during a run is a great idea too! I have been repeating that phrase to myself a lot lately. It is so easy to forget how far youve come if your focused on where other people are 🙂
Diane says
Haha, I am with you. I am not a fan of the taste of coconut but love the smell!
Robin says
I use it as diaper rash ointment for my babies, and as lip balm for me!
James says
I love the fortune cookie fortune. That’s something I’m always having to remind myself, especially as I look around the blogosphere and Twitter and see so many people accomplishing amazing things.
runeatrepeat says
Me too! My blog friends and real friends run 1000 more races than me and it’s hard to keep some perspective 🙂
Lauren says
Ah, your hair!!! Gorgeous. I haven’t used coconut oil other than cooking purposes, but I do love coconut body lotion. The smell and the taste (of the oil, not the lotion) are a beautiful thing!
Allison says
I cook with it all the time. I prefer it to evoo
Jen says
I have a busy weekend: bridemaid dress shopping with my BF, last long run before tinker bell half, and celebrating my husband’s bday.
I love coconut.
Sam @ Better With Sprinkles says
I don’t use coconut oil for cooking too much, but I love it as a moisturizer and a lip balm!
Kaleena says
So smart! Maybe I can leave a workout without having to always wear my hair in a bun now (: Love the curls!
Dani @ Live Lightly Everyday says
Not a fan of coconut flavored things, but I LOVE the smell of it! I recently purchased some coconut oil to use on my face too!
Samantha says
Thank you for the fortune at the end of this post!! I am freaking over running my first half next weekend, the Tinkerbell Half Marathon! I will type up this fortune and keep it I my pocket during my half! THANK YOU THANK YOU! As for coconut……I am Hawaiian, it would go against nature to not love it!
Katrina says
How’d you get the curls in your hair! It looks great!
Sarah Williams says
I LOVE coconut butter for all things skin and beauty. When I use it as a deep conditioner, I pick a day I don’t have to go anywhere and wash my hair FIRST. Then I slather it in, and put my hair up for the whole day, and wash it out before bed. Also works if I am wearing a hat or something. Usually works a little better than the short treatments. Also, if you do it in a short amount of time, if you heat it up…it does a hot oil kind of thing and works better!:)
I also use it on my face as I have acne in my twenties(didnt in my teens) and it helps with the hormonal acne I experience. Coconut oil is a great anti viral and anti bacterial.
We use it on burns too, and my husband slathers it on for razor burn.
I have heard you can make toothpaste too! I am skeptical…but going to try this year some time!!!
I find coconut oil is too expensive to cook with. Where I live it is about double the price, so I only use it for cooking whe I get it on sale. Otherwise, its all for health and beauty!:)
Jodea @ chillichocolatelove says
I wasn’t a fan of coconut until recently, but am making up for it now. I’ve gone nuts for it now. I’m loving coconut oil for cooking, although its really expensive in the UK.

Cute curls. I did the typical have a baby and chop all your hair off thing. Oh well….
This weekend is busy with church meetings, cleaning/organizing house (nesting has set in big time) and then some fun wedding dress shopping for a good friend of mine.
Have fun at your race – new half PR?
runeatrepeat says
I am so not in PR shape. I was thinking about taking a record # of pictures mid-race though?
Maria says
I’m actually crazy for all things coconut: coconut oil, coconut flakes, coconut butter, coconut milk. So, I may be a little biased in my advice.
I think that coconut oil is great for skin as a moisturizer, but I haven’t been crazy about it on my hair. The best home hair care remedy that I’ve gotten is apple cider vineger rinses. That actually makes a difference after the first time.
