Gym Fitness Classes or Specialty Gym?

Hello! I don’t want to pull a Donald Trump or anything, but I don’t know what my deal is – I’ve been super emotional all day. I think I’m stressed or something. There’s been a lot going on…

First the Roxican had a rash this weekend that spread all over her pansa and down one leg. We realized it was getting worse so I took her to the vet yesterday. They cleaned it up and gave me a bunch of pills to give to her. I asked if they had an human Xanax, but sadly no.

new cone of shame (450x800)

(They sent me home with the big cone of shame, but I bought this inflatable collar from the pet store. I thought it would be more comfortable for her, but I’m not sure how she likes sleeping with it yet.)

So she’s my roomie for the next couple of days as I nurse her back to health. She usually lives at my parent’s with her BFF Bailey. He’s depressed she’s gone. Poor guy.

me and the roxy (450x800)

This morning I had an early video conference call so I made a quick smoothie after my run and logged in. The call was going great until Vegas jumped up on the desk right in front of the camera. Thanks, friend. Way to go.

smoothie time before my cat ruined my skype chat (450x800)

Maybe the real reason I’m so emotional today is because I saw the saddest thing ever on my walk yesterday.

Ugh. I cannot believe this.

Someone dropped their pancake! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

the saddest thing youll ever see (800x450)

Breaks my heart.

On running and training and cross training…

I saw this tweet from Greg McMillan today and it was a good reminder for me. Easy days and rest days are an important part of getting in shape for races. I know I run too many ‘junk miles’. Before it was okay because I didn’t really have a goal but I’m starting to consider switching it up and doing more cross training.

image

That brings me to the question of the day…

In addition to yoga I’m considering taking either a barre class or joining a gym (again) for a bigger variety of classes for my cross training days.

What is your favorite non-running exercise?

Do you go to a Yoga or Cross Fit or other Specialty Gym?

I cross train at my gym with a group class to keep me motivated and accountable. The class is a tabata class that I love

I do Bodypump and a cardio/lift class at 24 hr fitness and love it along with my running. It’s much cheaper than specialty gyms, too. (You can get a 2 year pass at Costco for only $350)

Right now I do a specialty bootcamp and it’s pretty great, but because it is so costly I don’t get much chance to do any other classes/yoga. So I feel like that’s a trade off. But since it is so expensive I always go 4-5 times a week!

I’m loving the 21 day fix videos lately as my cross training! Once that’s over, we’re going to try the new Insanity Max:30….i’m scared.

I live in a small town, so no specialty classes or gyms here….gotta make do with the ol basement gym!

I stopped going to the gym, it wasn’t my favorite. Now I’m doing the 21day fix meal plan and workouts and LOVE them!! They have improved my running so much! I’m loving the weight workouts, its 30min in the morning and running in the afternoon. BOOM!

My other exercise isn’t too fancy – just love lifting and yoga! If I have any aches or pains, like when I was dealing with shin splints, I may use the bike or elliptical but generally find those to be really boring! 🙁 If I had extra money, I’d find a gym with a pool…swimming would definitely be crosstraining that I could enjoy.

I love barre classes, but they can be hard on my knees, so I don’t do them more than once a week. I’m a huge pilates addict, though. Mat pilates classes have made such a difference in my core strength, and I find the pilates reformer really helps to stretch out my leg muscles more than anything else I’ve tried – key for running! Reformer classes can be expensive, but one class per week has been enough to keep my hips and hammies happy.

I swear by swimming laps 1-2 times per week. I feel like it fixes my body.

I also love the Shred415 classes (I think it’s the same concept as Barry’s Bootcamp on the East and West Coast)! Kicks my butt every time.

Been taking Barre for at least 3x per week and it has made me such a better runner. It does wonders for your core and leg muscles often missed by running. You wont regret it.

I teach at a boutique studio that does mainly HIIT classes. I would term it “crossfit light” since there isn’t any olympic lifting but the workouts are very similar and different everyday. It’s such a great workout!! I also keep getting last minute entries to half marathons that I keep running like a crazy person without fully training. Oh well, I love them too!

I’ve heard great things about Class Pass, but I’m a member of Title Boxing. It’s done wonders for my stress levels and gives me an awesome happy adrenaline high. It’s also the best high intensity cardio workout, ab workout and my arms and back are getting ripped! It makes me feel like a badass! lol

I really enjoyed all the group fitness classes at my old gym (BodyPump, bootcamp, tabata, etc), but I do CrossFit now and low it. It’s a bit expensive to do as a ‘side gig’, so it that is your intention I’d probably go with a regular gym.

I like being a gym member. Running is my main exercise, but I get bored easily with everything else. I like that I can pick any class at the gym. One day I might do a muscle works class and the next, spinning. I also like the community feel and the massage chair. Bonus, it’s only 20.00 a month.

I LOVE Orangetheory. Offers the variety (steady runs, sprints, inclines mixed with rowing and weights/bodyweight floor exercises) that I crave in my workouts and in a more intimate environment than a big box gym. I also purchased some kettlebells to use at home a couple times a week to break up the routine and build strength.

About a year ago I started going to 9Round, which is kind of like a kickboxing/HIIT hybrid gym, and fell in love with it! I’ve been going 3-4 times a week in addition to running and it has really improved my fitness level and overall health. I can’t recommend it enough! 😀

I forced myself into the gym last night for cross training, it was the cross trainer, step master and then some rowing. It was pretty un-fun, I just wanted to be outside running!

Get well soon doggy ! 🙂

i’ve been thinking about getting Class Pass! Then I can go to a bunch of classes without feeling like i dont have enough variety…. the only speed bump for me is the cost :/ but maybe i can work it out….

i need to vary my run speeds more. i tend to stick to the same pace always, and thus i stay at the same pace. always. if i varied it, i could get faster. dang it.

Barre!!! Or Zumba if you have the right studio. They’re opening a new barre studio near me this fall so I’m definitely getting in on their awesome prices. It’s been a few years but I gained so much flexibility with barre, it was incredible!

Get a trial pass to the gym to try out their schedule and instructors. That will probably make your decision for you!

Personally speaking, I don’t love teaching group fitness classes in a big gym because the experience for the students isn’t usually as great as it can be in a specialty studio. There are pros and cons on both sides, but if you are just going to be hopping into different classes as they fit your life, the gym could be awesome!

Check out classpass.com! Its great–you can go to as many different specialty studios you like for $99/month…spin..barre, whatever! You can go 3 times a month to the same place and reserve classes online. I use it in LA but I’m sure they have lots of options in the OC.

I love fitness classes. Sometimes more than running. That is why I finally broke down and joined a large gym so that I could have variety and choice. I love being pushed to do different exercises I wouldn’t normally do on my own and the group atmosphere motivates me.

I go to the gym and lift weights four – five times / week. My favorite non-running exercise is riding my bike. I like Yoga, but it doesn’t fit my schedule very well, so I don’t get there very often. I HATE when my dog is sick. It is so tough. Hope he’s feeling better soon. Poor baby! 🙁

Get better soon Roxican doggie! I just noticed my dog has a little skin patch something on his tail. He might need some meds too. Very anxiety provoking. But for sure not as terrible as the dropped pancake.
I tend to only walk for cross training. Trying to bike more. Classes are too much for me as I am injury prone and can’t follow direction well.
