Ben and I headed to my grandma’s house for a small party for her 86th birthday. My mom surprised her with a small mariachi group that serenaded her.
She started crying she was so happy!
If you live in the Whittier area and need a small mariachi group email me and I can pass on their contact info.
I stole some of Ben’s green chili and cheese tamale while we enjoyed the show.
After a great round of ‘Volver’ and other favorites it was time for birthday cake. We got a red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting.
I had a piece, but I don’t think red velvet is my thing. (I know that’s crazy to some of you!)
We took the dogs for a short walk before heading home.
But, before we left the neighborhood Ben made it clear he wanted more tamales. So, I let him see my Cuca…
Cuca’s has great tamales and you can buy them by the dozen.
A dozen tamales makes dinner easy – heat, top with a fried egg and eat!
Ben and I are going to cuddle and watch movies for the rest of the evening. Even though I’m sad to not be running this weekend, I’m so happy that I finally get to spend a weekend at home!
See ya later

I’m always looking for stuff to put on top of my tamales, but I never thought of an egg! Genius!

LOL! Was that a tombstone candle on your Grandma’s cake?? 😉 (It kinda looked like it from the back!) She’s a cutie pie! Happy birthday to her – thanks for letting us share in the mariachi and the fun!

Yeah, my Nina got a tombstone candle and we all made her feel bad. It’s funny when you’re 40 or something, but not now Nina!

“Feliz cumpleanos to your Grandma!!” 🙂
I thought it was weird when my hubby asked me to cook a runny egg for the top of his tamale…but after I tasted it…NOT so weird!! Soo GOOD!! 🙂
Love mexican music…”volver, sabor a mi!”
enjoy your weekend! 🙂

Hi Pam! You doing the Mission Inn next weekend?!

86 years…she looks great! What a sweet smile she has, too 🙂
I’m not a big cake person, but red velvet is actually one of the flavors that I DO love. Go figure! If you’ve ever been to the famous Crumbs Bake Shop in NYC, they have a delicious red velvet cupcake, amongst many others of course.

I’m so with you regarding not feeling the love for red velvet.
Amber K says
I don’t get the whole red velvet thing either. It doesn’t taste like anything. Although the buttercream frosting rocks.
Happy Birthday to Grandma! She’s so cute.
Sana says
Andd I officially think you are crazy. No red velvet???
Angelica says
🙂 happy birthday to your abuelita! I know you think red velvet might not be your thing but TRUST me when i say that you have to try SusieCake’s! It is NOTHING compared to the other cakes that pretend to be red velvet. They have a couple of locations throughout california and are giving away free cupcakes if you like their facebook page. My world has never been the same…..sigh.
