Have you ever heard of Kohlrabi?
I hadn’t until this week when it arrived in my CSA delivery. Luckily it came with an explanation: “High in fiber and vitamins A and C, kohlrabi is a member of the Brassica family of vegetables – others are cabbage, broccoli and Brussel sprouts.”
Since they’re in the same fam as brussel sprouts I decided to make them the same way. I chopped them up, along with some b sprouts and roasted them at 425 until they were charred to my liking
I decided to eat these with ketchup for some reason and it was delicious!
and grabbed a veggie juice from Whole Foods.
I also picked up a tiny sampling of the 3 best things from the hot foods bar. Quinoa stuffing, corn bread stuffing and tofu.
Usually I look to see what the ingredients are in my hot food picks. This time I didn’t bother to look so it went through my head that the cornbread probably wasn’t vegetarian. But, it was so good I actually thought, “I don’t care if there is dog in this…”
Shame shame shame.
It’s time for another Ask a Monican. This time I ramble on and on about my hypochondria and my cat interrupted me by breaking something. Enjoy, if at all possible.
Topics Covered:
– Weirdest thing that’s ever happened to me while running
– Pre-period cramps while running
If you have any input on the second question, please respond in the comments or email me. Thank you.
I’ll make the next one shorter so you can watch it at work

For awhile, I experienced pre-menstrual cramps while running every month. About a mile into a run I would get a terrible cramp, that I could not (or at least didn’t want to) run through. By the time I walked the mile back home, it would be better. It hasn’t happened in about a year, but I don’t know what’s different. The most frustrating part was that I would end up missing a run for what didn’t seem like a good reason, but there was nothing I could do about it. I tried taking ibuprofen or tylenol before runs that time of the month, but it didn’t seem to help.

One thing about the first question – not only is getting a bottle of water thrown at you uncool – it’s also battery!
And very sage advice about finding a runner friendly doctor. Mine is the Medical Director for the Surf City Marathon.

I love Kohlrabi. It been a while since I’ve had it but when I was younger my dad used to make it into a soup. He added vegetables, beans, kielbasa (which wouldn’t make it vegetarian but added delicious flavor), and cabbage. We would top it with sour cream and it made the best comfort food during cold weather!

I love your videos! They are very insightful and fun. You are so good at answering questions.
I have a question….what is the brand/color of your fingernail polish? I love it!

I love kohlrabi! I had it raw as a kid, and I LOVE it roasted even more now.

I have a question…
How old are you?
Amanda says
I’d love to see “Ask a Ben” sometime. It’s always interesting to see their (significant others) perspectives.
As for the second question, I always thought that exercise would help reduce cramps rather than induce them. I think there has to be something more going on to cause that. I’d avoid running during that time of the month and try something like biking or yoga.

I can positively say I’ve never gotten menstrual cramps on a run.

Your video is so funny – I love how you follow up saying you asked a stranger if there was blood all over your face with “nothing too weird.”
Vitex, you can get it at most health food stores. It does something to your hormones where it evens things out. I used to get super bad cramps and heavy periods. I took it for a month and sweet relief. I loved it so much that I bought the actual tree on ebay 🙂

Ah! I’m not the only one that trips while running. But! The only time I ever did trip (while on a trail and there were tree roots), I actually broke a finger pretty severely and dislocated 2 other fingers! Talk about being uncoordinated!

Hi girlie 🙂 first time commenting, just wanted to say that even though I’m not a runner or a food blogger — I love your blog! It’s funny, personable, and definitely relate-able 🙂

Kohlarabi is my favorite vegetable EVER! Followed closely by broccoli stems. I am weird.

That actually happens to me on runs while I’m PMSing as well. Everything always says that exercise can help relieve cramps. Well it has always made mine worse. Much much worse. I’ve had to stop, sit, and crouch over my knees many times during these times. Sometimes I could continue running okay. Sometimes running would bring the cramps back. And I would always cut my runs short. I’m always terrified that a race day is going to fall around this time. Eeek! Not good. I’ll usually make sure to take ibuprofen around this time and before my runs if I can.

I loved watching your video. You are such a personality- love it!
My husband is a growing part of my blog and he guest blogged a few times from his perspective. It was really fun and it would be great to see your husband do a round of Q&A.

In regards to the second question on the video, I have experienced that same pain before while running. It does feel like a long menstrual cramp, just like the other reader described, and I usually have to stop running and sit for several minutes before the pain would subside. After resting a bit, if I got up and ran again, I was usually ok. I never talked to a doctor about it because I guess I just figured that the exercise triggered the cramp and that it was something I just had to deal with around the time of my period each month. It definitely wasn’t very fun.

Watch or read blogs at work!?! NEVER!!! Interesting veggie from the CSA. I really should try roasting brussell sprouts . . . onto the list!
