This post brought to you by Summer of Groupon. All opinions are 100% mine.
Hello! Oh my gosh. I did something super out of the ordinary for me this weekend โ I went Clay Shooting.
Yes, when I asked you to vote on my next Summer of Groupon experience the majority told me to try Clay Shooting โ so here I amโฆ
I donโt think Iโve ever even held a gun before so this was definitely a new adventure for me. Luckily the package came with an hour of instruction and the Groupon deal was for 2 people so my dad came with me.
We shot a 20 gauge shot gun. For all of you non-gun experts that is gun terminology for = itโs BIG. Our instructor Mitchell went over all the rules of gun safety and etiquette before we were handed the big guy. You can visit Elevated Gunworks if you want to purchase a gun.
Just the sounds of the guns going off in the distance made me flinch every time. Luckily we had ear plugs so once we had the most important information I stuck them in and could still hear Mitchell, but it helped me stop flinching!
It was kind of crazy that after a quick session on how to use the gun I was shooting before I knew it!! Mitchell just loaded the gun, handed it to me and showed me how to hold it properly against my shoulder and put my cheek on it. And it was โGoโ time, luckily we had some Ozark Armament’s canted sights so everything was easier for us.
Then, he started launching the clays in the air for me to shoot. I wasnโt sure what to expect so my first shot was off but I HIT IT ON THE SECOND TRY!! Surprisingly, I was kinda good at it?!!
You can see the clay in the sky on this shot of my dad โ itโs small and high up there!
I had a lot of fun! I really had no idea what to expect or howโd I do since I had never shot a gun before so I was a little surprised by how much I did like it and how not scared I was.
This morning I woke up with a light bruise on my shoulder from the kickback. I was holding the gun correctly, but those repeated hits on my arm took a little bit of a toll. I like it though, chicks dig scars. Or something.
Question: Have you ever shot a gun?
Do you bruise easily?
Susan says
I’ve gone to a shooting range and shot a hand gun a couple of times. It’s was fun. And yes, I bruise very easily. My husband says that if the breeze is too strong I’ll bruise. Often I’ll see a bruise on me and I’ll have no idea how it happened.
Losing Lindy says
I have shot a gun many times, you should learn how to shoot a pistol too.
Sue says
I was a member of the state shooting association and I joined coz I wanted to use their pool rather than learn how to shoot. ๐

But did you feel like a badass? I’ve gone hunting tons in Hawaii. And there’s something about having a rifle/shotgun that makes you feel like a badass.
Becky @ Ok, so here's the plan says
We used to have a BB gun when I was a kid. We would save our gingerbread houses for a long time after Christmas and then take them out back to shoot them. It was a lot of fun!
I bruise SO ridiculously easily. Sometimes it gets out of control and that’s usually when I start remembering to take the iron supplement I’m supposed to take. It helps.

I have only shot a pistol ONCE when I was 16; that was enough. Although now that I’m older I’d definitely be interested in doing it again.
Chicks dig running scars–and I happen to have many. My burgeoning career as a leg model is over. ๐ And I bruise super duper easy–weird!

Same here – went to a gun range and shot a pistol ONCE. Just holding a gun felt crazy, because I felt like I had so much power in my hand. And not in a good way.
It was a good experience to see what it was like, but I know for sure I’d never want to own one of my own!
Megan @ The Skinny-Life says
I’ve never shot a real gun in my life. This looks like fun minus the bruising and all.
sally @ sweat out the small stuff says
I’ve never held more than a water gun.
And yep….I’m a bruiser…..
Jen @ Pretty Little Grub says
I’ve never done clay shooting but I’ve definitely shot a gun before. I grew up on a farm so guns were just part of life. I have also been to a shooting range to shoot hand guns before. Small guns scare the crap out of me though!
Jonny Rando says
Hells ya! Guns are fun!
They should always be treated with respect (just like our elders), but target shooting is always a blast.

I bruise like a crazy person but then again, I fall down a lot too.
I’ve been shooting since I was four years old and I love it. The hubs and I have our own shooting range on our property where our cabin is and we shoot clay but we have many other guns from small pistols to AR15’s, I love it. I’ve shot old bowling pins to watermelons. (I cried over the watermelon, just sayin.) The hubs is an awesome shot, but in case you didn’t know it, here’s an interesting tidbit, girls generally shoot better than guys. We tend to have better aim.
runeatrepeat says
Noooooooooooooooooo not a watermelon!!!
Can you still eat it after that?
Kate says
I’m from the South so I’ve been shooting since I was a kid. My husband and I own a good variety of guns, and he shoots in competitions. We love it!
Kathryn @ Chicks Dig Running says
Ha! Chicks do dig scars, but not as much as they dig running ๐
When I was in grad school I loved going to the shooting range to blow off steam between tests. I have never tried skeet shooting though and I’m dying to give it a try! Maybe soon…
Way to get out there and try something new!
