Hello! Happy Monday. Let’s do this!! I really love new weeks, new years, new candles… all the new stuff to motivate me for a fresh start. Ya dig?
I’m still on east coast time so I woke up at 5am. The sun wasn’t up yet so I slowly got ready to run and headed out the door for 10 miles. It feels so good to run at home again. Can’t beat it.
Last night I had the most intense cannot stop it gimme gimme craving for Panda Express. Random, right?
And my fortune cookie was empty?? Whaaat does that mean? I say it means I can determine my own destiny.
Vegas actually came and wanted some of my chicken and I don’t always share with him but I was so happy from my food that I did. But, I didn’t do it like this… I just tossed it at him and told him to stop taking up the whole bed at night.
Vegas is destined to sleep on the couch all day, I can just feel it.
Post run breakfast included some Monic-Os! How awesome is this?!! The lovely people at Cheerios sent me a box with my name on it! Did you hear Cheerios is gluten free now? They taste exactly the same though.
What I’m listening to right now on my run…
Confession… listening to the Serial podcast about Adnan Syed and Hae Min Lee completely turned me into a weirdo. It was my FIRST podcast ever and I loved it. The writing was really good and the story pulls you in to keep listening. So when it was over I felt a hole in my life. I thought lil ol’ Sarah Koenig was my running buddy telling me a (very sad) story while we ran.
After I was done with Serial I discovered Undisclosed, a continuation on the case. And somehow I discovered Serial Dynasty (which I feel is not really credible and a little too dramatic, but I’m desperate for friends so I listen to it). And through that I discovered the Generation Why podcast (which I feel is just two guys’ opinions on different cases and also not credible on a journalistic or legal level most of the time).
Buuuut, from that I discovered the Maura Murray case. She is a girl who went missing almost 10 years ago and two guys are making a documentary about the case. While they are doing the documentary they are also doing a podcast = Maura Murray doc. So, now I’m listening to that.
I need to start listening to books or something, but this has me sucked in for now.

I’m so glad you posted about Missing Maura Murray. I binged listened to Serial, Undisclosed and Serial Dynasty and there was a dark hole when I finished them all. Now I listened to all the podcasts on Maura and I’m hooked! I need more recommendations, I’ll try the Sword and Scale one. Thanks!

I used Mindy Kaling’s book, “Is everyone hanging out without me and other concerns,” while training for my marathon. She is hilarious. Ellen Degeneres’ book “Seriously, I’m kidding,” was also fun to listen to while running.

If you like the mystery and the story behind Serial, you should check out Sword and Scale. True crime podcast that talks about the minds behind the crimes. A little creepy, but entertaining.
Jen says
To the Best of Our Knowledge is great, and Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me is hilarious (laughing while running = breath control??). I also love Fresh Air for straight up interviews.

I loooove listening to podcasts when I run! “Satellite Sisters” is my favorite – five sisters from all over the country who talk about everything. They’re usually an hour long, and I usually look like an idiot laughing out loud to myself at least once.

I was OBSESSED with Serial. Now, I have been listening to Undisclosed and you update is feeding my huge obsession with this case, I definitely want to checkout Serial Dynasty. The case is so crazy!!!
Chanelle @ Lizventures.com says
Girl if you loved Serial, try Sword and Scale. It is also a crime podcast and it includes police recordings, court recordings, and more. Really creepy and cool.
Jackie says
I have the same podcast problem and appreciate the tip on some new ones! I just started lime town today, if you haven’t already listened you need to give it a try!
Tracey says
I don’t listen to books on tape. My ADHD makes it impossible to follow a story line that I’m listening to. I do like a wide variety of music on my playlists…everything from country to hard rock to Michael Jackson. Go figure!

I listen to the Adam Corolla podcast most days and have for like for 5 years . I love that its topical and it makes the miles fly by. I also subscribe to audible and this time of year Im all about Stephan king books. Just finished finders keepers (love) and am starting on his sons book, heart shaped box. Mindy kaylings audio books are great too (and Tina fey and Amy Pohler…). I listen to music only the last mile or so.
Cheri @ Overactive Blogger says
I love all of those. I will 1000% be dling Maura Murray doc. I love weird stuff like this. Somewhat terrifying, but also really riveting. I listen to lots of messed up stuff too, don’t feel bad.

I’ve been listening to the Black Tapes Podcast lately. Good stuff. Supernatural paranormal stuff. A friend recommended We’re Alive, it’s about zombies or something. Black Tapes is good though. I can vouch for that.

I’m loving Straight Talk with Ross, Sex with Emily, and Pop Culture Happy Hour 🙂

Serial was my first podcast too!! Now I am hooked on them. Right now, I love; Stuff You Missed in History Class, Americas Test Kitchen, A Few Things With Claire and Erica, and This American Life. I might have a problem. Well, maybe not, because now I can talk about stuff other than running and raising 3 boys. Hmmmm…
Sarah Chiodi says
Serial was my first podcast, but Stuff You Should Know is the one I am listening to non-stop and has got me hooked to podcasts. Perfect running motivation.
Daisy @ Fit Wanderlust Runner says
I like This American Life and The Moth podcast. My husband got me into listening to these but for long car rides. Haven’t tried it yet for running though.

THIS AMERICAN LIFE!!!!!!!

You got me hooked on the Serial Podcast and I loved it! Now I’m about half way through Undisclosed. But, I’m not as hooked on it as I was Serial. I will have to check out the Maura Murray one.
Amanda says
I really want a box of Cheerios with my name on it! That’s the coolest thing I’ve seen all day!
Flower says
I loved Serial too and I also love listening to all kinds of things on NPR. I also really like listening to my friend Tina Muir on Runners Connect. She has an awesome podcast and listening to another runner while I’m running tends to motivate me, especially Tina.
Tina Muir says
Thank you so much lovely lady for the shoutout! I am glad to hear you enjoy it, and hope you will take a listen Monica and other readers! If you do not like it, tell me why, and I will do what I can to change it 🙂 Unless of course it is that you just can’t stand me…..not sure I can do much about that hehe 🙂

I loved Serial. I am listening to the last book Of the Penn Cage Series by Greg Iles. This series is 4 books and they are all suspenseful murder cases mostly. I think you would enjoy them. The books are:
1. The Quiet Game
2. The Turning Angle
3. The Devil’s Punchbowl
4. Natchez Burning

I LOOOOOVE, Stuff You Should know. It’s an info podcast. Dinner Party Podcast is also great, and “This American Life” from NPR.
Heather@The Rocky Road says
Ahh i’ve been really into Undisclosed lately after finishing Serial. So good.
After starting my podcast experience with Serial, I have struggled to find another one i REALLY love. The search continues, but i will definitely check out some of your suggestions!
Annette @ Sweating Through Life says
I was a huge fan of Serial. Is there a season 2? I heard that a season 2 was coming. I tried undisclosed, but it wasn’t the same as serial for me. Since then, running hasn’t been the same:(
Dani says
any NPR especially This American Life and TED radio, and stuff you missed in history class 🙂
Chad says
I have already listened to Serial and really was upset at how it ended. I am glade that you have found Undisclosed. I will check that out as well.
Julia says
Sooooo, this isn’t terribly helpful bc these are documentaries and not books on tape or podcasts, but if you have a big Serial-shaped hole in your life, I strongly recommend the Staircase, all of the West Memphis 3 documentaries and the Jinx. As far as podcasts go, This American Life will give you a nice weekly dose of Koenig (or at the very least, Koenig & Friends). The topics are diverse and rarely focus on true crime, but it’s still good stuff and at an hour long apiece can get you through a mid-length run. That’s all I’ve got.
Julie says
I recently got into the Moth Story Hour. It is an NPR podcast, really good for long runs since the stories change every 10 minutes.
Susan says
I’ve never listened to a book or podcast. Is that super lame of me?
