The first thought that went through my head when I decided to take a week off of running was, “Oh no! I’m not going to be able to lose weight now!”
But, I know that is not true. You don’t have to run to lose weight.
I actually first started losing weight by walking. I took walks with my friend and walks on the treadmill. At least initially, all I did was walk – I didn’t even change my eating for a while, and I lost weight.
So, as much as my heart is hurting and I’m feeling stressed about not running, I know I can still reach my goals.
Things I can to do stay on track while I am off running:
– Make sure to still walk or elliptical for an hour a day (on the days I was going to run)
– Don’t give up all hope and just eat my sorrows away to sabotage myself
– Focus on strength training, DVDs and other exercises
I know a lot of people who lost weight through diet and exercise, but didn’t run at all. Now, I do definitely want to start running again as soon as possible, but that’s because I love it, not because it’s the only way!
Contrary to my last post, Ben is super supportive and I was trying to be a bit tongue in cheek. He even helped me stretch this morning…
After a rainy walk with the dogs I came back home to cut up the watermelon my mom bought. Since I was eating so much of it, I decided to make a fruit salad for lunch. I layered yogurt, cottage cheese, fruit, cereal and nuts. After this picture I had to transfer it to a bigger bowl because I wanted to mix it up and add more cereal 🙂
Ben and I are currently at AAA trying to fix up some very frustrating car registration stuff. Ben’s car is in MD, but needs a CA smog check to renew the registration. The CA DMV is closed today and every time we call we end up just getting the wrong information. ..

I agree that you don’t have to run. It’s something like 80% what you eat and 10% exercise (and 10% genetics).
Your fruit salad looks great!

Well, if it makes you feel any better, I recently emailed you about being sick and unable to run. I took last week off and today found out i have pneumonia, so it will be even more time off. However, we can’t let these breaks get us down!!! We should use the time to do other wonderful things for our bodies and I am sure you will!

How do you motivate to strength train??? Can’t do it.

Love this post! I used to think that I could only lose weight by running, which led to running EVERY DAY, which led to burnout, which led to no exercising, which led to weight GAIN! So kind of the opposite of what I intended!

I have actually lost weight since I stopped running. I have not ran for a month now and I was running about 40miles a week. I just switched up my workout to the elliptical and threw in more strength and yoga. Not only have I lost weight, but my body looks really toned now (people have actually commented). I will always run because I like it, but I am a firm believer that diet is 90% and excercise (whatever kind) is 10%.

I am sorry to hear that you cannot run, but you can totally reach your goals without running!! You CAN do what EVER you want as long as you put your mind to it!! Your fruit salad looks so fresh and delish!! 🙂

This is so true and I forget it sometimes as well! Honestly from your pic I can’t imagine you need to worry about it

Evan – you rock! Thanks 🙂

Way to keep your eye on the goal and not on the obstacles! I think Bob or Jilian said on The Tonight Show 90% of it is what you eat, and I wouldn’t doubt that. And with all this strength training you will be buffed up 🙂
