Stick to Your Guns

I am the easiest person to influence with food. Every time I see an Olive Garden commercial I am convinced that’s what I want for dinner. Those TGI Friday’s commercials make me want to eat there too (and I do not like that place at all).

But, I digress… I often think oatmeal is a yummy idea for breakfast – especially when I have ripe bananas for it. I think all the delicious pictures of oats I see on other blogs make me think I want oatmeal.

But I don’t.

Don’t get me wrong, I like oatmeal. It’s just that I would rather have a bagel with AB or something else for breakfast. Every time I make oats  I am left unsatisfied for some reason. I don’t know if I miss the chewiness of bread or the filling factor of a smoothie, but I eat oatmeal and then want something else.

I’m sharing this with you because I made oatmeal for breakfast today. I made ‘em good too! They had almond milk, banana, chia seeds, stevia, cinnamon and almond butter. They tasted good icon smile Stick to Your Guns IMG 8331 thumb Stick to Your Guns

But, they weren’t as good as my bagel and AB.

I guess I should remember no matter how beautiful and inviting oatmeal looks on other blogs, bread and nut butter is most often the better choice for my belly.

I should also remember that no matter how good of a deal TGI Friday’s is advertising, I don’t like that place and will leave feeling unsatisfied as well.

Even though it’s always Friday there, which sounds nice right about now…

Question: Are you easily influenced by advertising (or blogs)?

  1. says

good for you for recognizing what works for you. even if you are swayed by ads/blogs. i’m influenced in the sense that i think lots of things will look/taste really good but i’m such a creature of habit that i don’t end up making any of it!

  2. says

I’m a marketers dream. I’m a sucker for pretty packaging, especially food packaging. I recently bought a frozen dinner because the packaging was designed well and the food looked good. I don’t even eat frozen dinners!

I work in graphic design, so I guess I just over appreciate good design? ha.

I do the same thing! Especially if something has the word “NEW!” splashed across the box, it will most likely end up in my shopping cart. Luckily, I am normally at the supermarket with my husband and he makes sure I limit my “NEW!” item purchasing.

  3. says

My boyfriend is exactly like that – - any commercial he sees, he wants to buy the product, go to the place, or eat at the restaurant. I am definitely influenced more by the blogs I read because I feel like I “know” the people so trust their opinions. Reading blogs has caused me to try tons of stuff I wouldn’t have otherwise, so I love that!

And that’s interesting that oats don’t fill you up, but smoothies do. I’m the complete opposite! Since I started adding 1/2 a scoop of protein powder to my smoothies, its made a HUGE difference.

  4. says

I’m with you on the bread and nut butter for breakfast! I try to switch up for the sake of not boring people to death, but it nevers satisfies as well!

I do that with commercials too — but luckily almost never actually follow through with eating there!

  5. Ashley C. says

I get a lot of cravings when I read blogs, especially if they have a dessert that looks especially delicious I start craving sweets. Pizza commercials always make me crave pizza because they make it look so damn good, but it never actually tastes that good..

  6. says

Yes, I’m awful about being influenced. I actually want to try Hellman’s new cage-free egg mayonaise even though I’ve never enjoyed mayo once just because it’s made with cage-free eggs. That can’t be normal.

  7. says

AH! I’m the same way about oatmeal! All the bloggers make it look SO good, but when I try it, all I keep thinking is how much I miss my beloved cereal in the morning. Haha.

  8. says

Your post made me lol! I kept saying to myself that I need to eat my oats even though I hated them. My problem is that I was making them plain with water and no extras. Other blogs gave me the idea to cook up an apple, add some PB and cinnamon and now I actually like them. Trust me I would rather eat leftover pizza or tofu scramble, but for a quick and healthy breakfast I finally got oats to work for me. If I could trust myself to have a bag of bagels in the house I would enjoy that too though!

  9. says

We went to TGI Fridays the other day because my friend was craving it. I totally am subject to giving in to commericals + blogs. Luckily we dont have cable so Im not too influenced by commericals, but Im heavy on the blogs!

  10. Amanda says

Yeah TGI Fridays looks better than it is. I made that distinction a few years ago and never looked back.

I’m always totally swayed by seeing people drinking wine on tv – really makes me crave a glass!

  12. says

I have to tell myself that food always looks better on TV than it tastes. I get so mad at myself when I decide to go to a restaurant because of a commercial. Desserts at restaraunts are the biggest letdown because the pictures always look so much better (and bigger) than the actual item.

  13. says

I’ve hardly watched a commercial since the invention of DVR. I record EVERYTHING, yes, even if I’m home to watch it “live”. I would rather putz around for ten mintues so that I can skim through the commercials than watch it in real time. Haha…

P.S. I think you feel the same way about your bagel and AB as I feel about my oats! I keep buying yummy breakfast breads but end up eating them for dessert because I can’t start my day without me oats!

  14. says

I definitely am. I’ll see a smoothie and then make one for dinner and although they’re great for breakfast, they leave me really unsatisfied at dinner. And I’m always buying new things at the grocery store just b/c I saw it on a blog and someone said it was good.

  15. says

Funny, I feel this way when I just eat a bagel for breakfast. Or just a smoothie. I never understand how people can just have a liquid meal and be satisfied without any chew.

  16. says

I am sometimes persuaded by advertisements but normally I am so frugal that I can talk myself in to eating at home. I will save money and eat healthier.

  17. says

I LOOOOOOVE the Olive Garden, and always want to eat there even when I don’t see a commercial, and I know it’s gross but I don’t care! I could eat those breadsticks for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

But to answer your question, yes I’m easily influenced by food commercials. I often have to yell at the TV “shut up!”

On the oatmeal topic, I am with you. I like oatmeal and have it once a week or so for breakfast, but I’m not one of those people who can eat it every day happily.

  18. says

I see things again and again on blogs that I know I don’t like, but I really wish I did because they look so good!

As for oatmeal, I make mine chewy. I use very little liquid to keep the oats very thick and very chewy. While this sort of stinks for me, a volume eater, but at least I actually love the texture!
