Today is my my favorite day of the year = National Watermelon Day!!!
Instead of a cat dance I did a watermelon dance this morning
Before I began celebrating this very important holiday I attempted a tempo run. I say “attempted” because I did not feel fast today and really struggled
I did the same route as last weeks tempo – 1 mile warm up, 4 tempo (tried at least), 1 cool down.
Last week’s numbers from the exact same run:
Today my splits were:
- Mile 1: 8:56
- Mile 2: 8:33
- Mile 3: 8:49
- Mile 4: 8:09
- Mile 5: 8:16
- Mile 6: Cut short but pace was around 9:20
I was faster last week. But, more importantly I just felt better last tempo run too. I felt good and speedy. Today I felt sluggish.
Tomorrow is a rest day and I have my long run scheduled for Friday because of Blogher!!! Hopefully a day of rest will recharge me
Since today is National Watermelon Day I considered eating my favorite fruit for breakfast. But, decided to save that for lunch (and snack and dinner). Instead, I made pumpkin protein pancakes – on a watermelon placemat!
Pancakes, polka dot plate and my favorite place mat
Watermelon Facts (from Watermelon.org):
- It takes 3 months to grow a watermelon
- It takes Monica 3 days (tops) to eat one
- Watermelons are 92% water
- The largest watermelon ever grown was 262 pounds! (I bet that would take me a week to eat. Maybe.)
- You’re supposed to wash a watermelon before you cut it. (No thanks.)

My big plans for today include eating this whole watermelon. I had Ben weigh it and it’s only 12 pounds (small for my taste). So, this shouldn’t be too hard
Question: What’s your favorite food holiday? Any guesses as to how many watermelons I eat in a year?? (Cause I really wish I knew!)
scratch cards with best odds says
Anybody understand how much cash I must pay in before I begin trying to play?

I love watermelon, but didn’t know it was National Watermelon Day until now … and of course I didn’t eat any watermelon today. :/
Alaina says
My favorite food day is National Peanut Butter Day. Which to me is pretty much everyday. 🙂 And Ice Cream Day!
chandra says
Umm, I’m not sure why I’ve never remembered to tell you this, but the town right next to my hometown in Illinois claims it is “the melon capital of the world” and has a whole festival over Labor Day weekend dedicated to watermelon called “Melon Days”. Free watermelon all weekend! 🙂
Sara says
I think I have the same polka-dot plates! Did you get them at Pier 1? Didn’t know it was Watermelon Day today. I’m counting reading your post as my way of honoring the holiday.
runeatrepeat says
Yes, Pier 1!
Amanda says
National Watermelon Day? I never knew there was such a holiday! Makes me wanna go eat some watermelon right now 🙂
Stephanie says
After watching your “Cutting a Watermelon” video, I was able to impress a couple of people last 4th of July at how well I could get around the bad boy.
I earned street cred’ that day and for that I am grateful.
runeatrepeat says
Yah!
Amanda says
YUM!
Dude I’m not washing a watermelon. Just no.
Amanda @FancyOatmeal says
I know this will break your heart, but I’m not a watermelon fan. But that good news is that leaves more watermelons for you! I don’t know if there is a holiday for it, but I would love to celebrate a Turkey Sandwich day. I love em. I always look for variations of it on menus. Of course, it goes without saying, OATMEAL OATMEAL OATMEAL!!!
janetha @ meals & moves says
I love your love for watermelon!
Mary says
I’m with you, it takes me only a couple days to polish off a watermelon. It is TRULY my favorite fruit in the entire world and I wish it were in season all year long.
mmm I’m going out to buy one now 🙂
Rosa - Fitness, Food, Fulfilled says
I’ve been using your tips on how to choose a watermelon (presence of a belly) and each one has been so sweet and juicy! Your tips on cutting it up takes no time at all. I always hate when people leave the rind on because I don’t like the sticky you inevitably get on your face. This is perfect. Thanks, Monica!
runeatrepeat says
Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
Kelsey says
I love watermelon! but I hate cutting it up, so I usually buy the cubes, even though they are more expensive.
Crystal says
I love watermelon. It is my favorite fruit, and I can eat sooooo much of it. Really a whole one in a day.
But, I think my favorite food holiday would be Ice Cream or Frozen Yogurt Day.
Allyson @ (so not) SuperRunnerMom says
July was National Ice Cream month and I celebrated hard.
Watermelon is one of those things that I want to like, but just don’t. Like coconut and boat shoes.
Happy Watermelon Day to you. Enjoy!
Daniella @ Runner at Heart says
Today is my birrthday and this is the first I am ever hearing that it is National Watermelon Day! That is by far my favorite fruit!
Hayley @ Oat Couture says
Ah love the vid! And the fact that it’s watermelon day! Yooooo! I can now justify eating even more of it than I normally do! 🙂
Jamie@everydaydolce says
Favorite food holiday: any time I can eat as much pizza as I want, or anything Italian, which typically means being home in my mom’s kitchen 🙂
Love watermelon so much, I’m glad it’s good for us 🙂
Ida says
4 mile tempo runs are hard! We used to do them on the track- 16 laps of torture. Mad props for getting the run in.
it’s not a food holiday per se, but I love 7/11 for the free slurpee:)
The Healthy Engineer says
I wish watermelons were in season in India…but at least mangoes are! 🙂
But I actually have followed your watermelon advice!!
My parents didn’t want to believe it at first, but as each watermelon with that big mark turned out great, they now use that trick.

I’m afraid to spook your blog away by commenting. But I have to say:
I haven’t eaten nearly enough watermelon this summer.
I don’t think I could ever take a bite out of a bell pepper like an apple.
The California burrito sounds almost too good for words.
Hope your foot herpes is doing alright!
I’m lucky in that 90% of my family lives in the same state as me, so we don’t travel for the holidays more than just a short drive. I have no clue what it’s like having to actually fly somewhere during that busy time!
And I’m sure I missed a few things. But glad to see that you’re still awesome!
runeatrepeat says
Yeah that you can stop by today!!!
Jane @ Jane's Addictions says
You don’t wash your watermelon beforehand?! (Gasp! 🙂 It does make the surface more slippery I must say. How many servings would you say an average watermelon has? I eat about a 1/4 at once, so it that like 5 cups? I loved your “How to cut a Watermelon video”. I’ve been hesitant to buy whole watermelons because it was a pain to cut, but I am getting very good at it thanks to you 🙂
Mary @ Bites and Bliss says
Yayyy!! I didn’t know it was national watermelon day..but I’m definitely going to celebrate now!

Any holiday that involves food is my favorite!!!
But I love the Strawberry Festival back home in Indiana, they have tons of goodness!!!
I am headed to the Catfish Festival for Labor Day weekend so I am excited about that too!

I love every food holiday! But I think any one that involves cookies and ice cream would be my favorite!
Christin says
My favorite food holiday would be Chocolate Day. No question about it, didn’t even blink 🙂
Good thing I exercise, because Chocolate Day comes around more than once a year in my world…

Every day is Chocolate Day to me!

oh my god, there’s a watermelon.org! Too funny. I’m having watermelon tonight for sure.
Chloe (In Fine Feather) says
Watermelons are definitely one of my favorite fruits – and I had NO idea you were supposed to wash them before cutting into them.
I’ll have to celebrate today by picking up some watermelon cubes!
Julia says
Making my way to Costco to get 2 watermelons: 1 for lunch. 1 for dinner. My favorite food holiday? Too many to mention. But today is FOR SURE one of them!
Gavi @ Gavi Gets Going! says
I thought of you last night as I passed the watermelons at the grocery store! They were ridiculously expensive ($2.99 a pound? Is it because it’s a holiday? :)) so I didn’t get one, but I hope you enjoy yours! How do you find out about these food holidays? If I could invent a favorite, it would probably be National Swiss Chard-Sauteed-in-a-Ridiculous-Amount-of-Garlic Day. That stuff has changed my life. Have a great day!
