I know New Year’s Resolutions get a bad rap. But, I get a bad rap in some circles too and I don’t care. I love New Year’s Resolutions!
I love making a sometimes ridiculous, sometimes realistic goal and trying to achieve it. I like that resolutions are all about ME. Wait. Narcissistic much? I mean, I like that I’m not using someone else’s ruler to define my success.
It’s not about me comparing myself to someone who is better, faster, smarter, prettier than me. I set these goals based on a challenge for myself.
*Please do not compare yourself to my goals. Make your own goals. Actually, I’m thinking about making one of my 2013 Resolutions – Don’t Compare Yourself to Others.
In 2012 I set 6 goals for myself. I wrote them down and posted them on the fridge. Spoiler alert: I didn’t achieve them all, but I made solid progress and I’m happy with the results.
These goals are personal and a bit embarrassing. I struggled with whether or not to post them as I wrote them. I do think it’s extremely personal to post the money, weight and readership numbers below but I thought you would really appreciate direct talk over vague goals so here they are…
2012 Goals
1. Get to goal weight 145 – No. I didn’t hit goal weight this year, but I think I finally figured out something that’s working for me. I’ll share soon, but not now. I’ve made great progress with night time eating (this holiday week notwithstanding) which was a part of this goal. To be continued…
2. PR!!! Kinda! I wanted to PR in the Half and Full. I did not PR in the half marathon, but I have a bright and shiny PR from the Santa Barbara Full Marathon and I’m very happy with it 3:53:39!!!
3. Save $xxxx pieces of dirty green paper. Done!
Even though I loved doing RER full time and training PT it wasn’t helping me save money. Going back to my old recruiting job enabled me to save money and hit this goal. Done and done
4. Get RER to 25,000 readers a day. Nah. I didn’t get all the way there. But, RER is doing great and I’m very happy that you’re reading! Thank you for helping me on this one. I did get to 11,000 Twitter followers and have a ton of great partnerships because of it!
Plus I have had some amazing opportunities thanks to good ol’ Run Eat Repeat…
One of my bucket list goals is to be in a magazine and I had a recipe published in Oxygen this year! Highlight of my life
I ran with Chris Lieto in Galvaston
and I met these amazing celebs at the ICBINB Red Carpet event!
5. Travel – Done.
I took a lot of great running and blogging trips this year. Ben and I skipped our annual big trip, but we’re planning something good for 2013.
Check out my Travel Page for a list of all my travels. Here are some pics:
6. Be Fearless – Done.
I second guessed a lot of opportunities this year because I was scared. Some of the things I’ve done and places I went this year completely intimidated me, but I’m glad I went for it.
Love this card…
Question: How did you do with your goals in 2012?
(They don’t have to be resolutions, any goals)
Jac @ Challenged & Running in the Bike Lane says
Great job at succeeding at some of your goals. I only set 3 and succeeded at 2! I consider that successful!
Connie Gomez says
Hi! I am a new follower! Connie from @MommaofDosTX ! I love your number 6! I think I did ok, but I know I should do better! I want 2013 to be a great year for me and my family !! Great post 😀
Korlynne says
I love resolutions and goals. I love setting goals for myself because I really enjoy ‘checking’ things off of a list. 2012 was my year for running. Planned on running a half and ended up running two with a PR of 1:58:45!!!
Also, ran 58.1 miles in races which was unplanned but amazing! I want to double my mileage in 2013 and add a FULL to my list 🙂
Come back to SB and run my first FULL with me in my hometown!
Love your blog, it’s my fave xo
Kelly @ Running to Healthy says
My biggest goal was to lose weight which didn’t really happen though I did rejoin Weight Watchers yesterday. I also dreamed of running a half marathon again (after many years off, injuries, and illness). I am proud to say I am running the Disney Half in two weeks. I also wanted to start my own blog and I finally worked up the courage to begin. Overall, a good year but I am looking forward to being even more productive in 2013.
Steph @ Steph Stays Slim says
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this post!! I’m working on a post similar to this, but you have so much more cooler stuff, haha!! You’re def fearless for being so transparent with your resolutions – good for you! That’s what’s helps normal people like me love big time bloggers like you (yes, big time!). Enjoy the last few days of 2012 🙂

I just finished my blog post (to be posted later) about completing my goals! I completed a little more than half of what I set out to do, which I am okay with. The ones I didn’t complete were more physical ones (yoga expertise, running 5k, etc.) but that just renewed my goals for 2013.
So proud of you for rockin’ on your goals!
Deirdre @ Oh Well Whatever says
Wow you did great and that is nice you are able to share it all. Pretty amazing year. I didn’t really set any goals for 2012, how sad is that… The only real challanges/goals I set were running ones and those got sidelined with my pregnancy. I did achieve my month of MAYHEM before that happened though and that felt good – one race every weekend for the entire month ending with 50 miles at Nanny Goat.
Ok time to go scribble out some ideas of goals for 2013. First that comes to mind: “don’t loose your mind with 2 babies, working, starting a business and all the rest of life.” Yikes.
Alexis {Diva on a Diet} says
Looks like you’ve had a pretty incredible year! I haven’t made formal resolutions in a long time. My one and only goal this year was to finally get to a healthy weight, but I didn’t put a timeline on it, and I did it! Now I keep feeling like I need to set up some official resolutions for 2013, but I wonder if not setting anything official worked out better for me!?! I guess I only have a few days left to decide!
Melissa @TryingtoHeal says
I’m just about to look over my goals…I’m kind of afraid to! LOL.
Yours seemed to have worked out for 2012 though! I’m sure 2013 holds lots more for you (like, a trip to PERU!?)
runeatrepeat says
I still want to go to China!
Kim says
I’m pretty sure that I didn’t have any well-defined goals for 2012. I’m going to make setting some (and working toward achieving them) a priority for 2013. I really like the one about not comparing yourself to others – might have to start with that!!!
Ashley says
Awesome job on your 2012 goals! I was going to comment the other day that you are looking really good-so whatever you’ve come up with is working very well! I’m running my second half marathon this spring (although my first one was 5 years ago, so I kind of feel like this is my first one again!) and reading your blog inspires me to get out and get my runs in. So thank you for sharing your blog with us!
Susan says
Me again – Speaking of not comparing yourself, this was on Facebook yesterday on the Go Sport ID page. I’ve printed it and have posted it in multiple places in my house. I struggle with not comparing myself but am trying to do better.
“Your job is to keep running. To keep up the flow, follow three simple rules:
1.) Run for yourself. You only need to judge yourself against yourself.
2.) Run what you can. Anything you run is better than running nothing.
3.) Be proud of your runs. Lots of people go longer and faster, but none could have done your work for you.”
-Joe Henderson, Better Runs

Congrats on your success in 2012! I don’t remember making any formal goals/resolutions but I was hoping that 2012 would suck less than 2011 did…and happily that was accomplished! I ran more in 2012 than I ever had before and I did have success in challenge I made to myself by completing 3 half marathons (and a5K) within a 14 day time frame. And that middle half was a PR. HOORAY ME 🙂
One of my goals in 2013 is to complete MORE half marathons so that I can move up a level in the Half Fanatics. And I want to be better at tracking my mileage. And I need to be better with my blogging.
Tara says
Great post, I am a new reader as of 2012, and so happy I found you! You make me laugh each day, and give me motivation!
I for one, never like to set a # for the scale. There are so many other important things that that silly #-How much you exercise, eating right, how your clothes fit,FEELING good and being healthy : )
I dont really do resolutions, usually just set out to be a better me than last year and accomplish things that I WANT to, and to be sure to push myself to do things I am a bit nervous/afraid to do.
I do have one goal, do my first half marathon, whoot-whooo!
Happier Heather says
Congrats on your accomplishments and progress this year, Monica!
Like you, I didn’t hit all of my goals, but I feel like I made solid progress on almost all of them, which is really what the goals are about in the end; keeping us from staying at the status quo because it’s comfortable. I actually wrote blog posts on my 2012 progress and my 2013 goals this week.
Oh, and I LOVE “Don’t Compare Yourself to Others” as a goal. We all need that reminder sometimes; I know I do, especially when it comes to running and weight loss.
Angie @ Pint of Goals says
I made my resolutions by making a goal board using pictures; they involved running (including a marathon), eating healthy, pampering myself, and starting a family. Although I didn’t pamper myself much, I was successful in running a marathon in June 2012, eating pretty well, and becoming pregnant!
This year I want to be better about planning a week’s worth of meals so I don’t have to run to the store every other day.
Karen says
I really like making resolutions too but tend to slack off on them. I will def use the “make it visible” idea though as a constant reminder. Two of my big resolutions are also save some dough and be fearless. Thanks for sharing!
abbi says
I love goals, resolutions whatever you want to call them and am actually quite good at sticking to them (or some of them, I write down some ridiculous ones too). In fact, most of what I’ve accomplished came from a goal. Loved reading about yours and what a great 2012!
Lindsay says
Congratulations on all your accomplishments in 2012! Only good things to come for you in 2013! 😀
Heather says
I’m a new reader as of 2012 so I’d like to think I am helping ya with your goal;)
runeatrepeat says
You did! Thank you 🙂
Deb says
Wow – you had a great year! I loved the fearless picture, posted to my FB – hope you don’t mind my borrowing.
I think I’m going to keep a small journal of my highlights this next year to review next December. Thanks for your recap. Can’t wait to see how you top it on 2013! Happy new year.
Michelle says
2012 wasn’t the best year for me. One of my main goals was to travel a ton and I did as I traveled extensively throughout Europe. But when it comes to fitness and weight… yeah, FAIL.
Jess says
Love this! My only New Year’s resolution was to BE a runner. I finally got a treadmill last year, and set the goal for myself to run for a full year as until then I would ‘take up running’ every spring and ditch it when the weather was too hotcoldrainiysnowysunnycloudy etc. In order to do that, I decided I would run one event or race each month for the whole year. I didn’t start until March, since I had no base miles, so I will be finishing the final two months at the start of this year, but I ran at least one a month, usually two, and a few times I did 4 or 5. I’m pretty proud of it, and I’m trying to decide my new goals for 2013 🙂 I like your $xxxx pieces of dirty green paper….I think I’m going to steal that one (well…not STEAL, but definitely using the goal for myself)

I love resolutions … I even have a page dedicated to resolutions in my blog and post about them … weird?
I love trying to have goals to focus on and even though I am not always successful at completing them I always have made them. I now make them more official in my blog, but I think I have done them since I was very young … and though I DO try to achieve them I do not beat myself about them if by chance I do not complete them … I was not particularly successful this year … 🙁
…. thank you for sharing my love of resolutions … I was beginning to think I was the only one.
Tabatha Rhodes says
My goals for this year were to get to my goal weight (did not do) and to be have a healthier lifestyle. While I did not get to my goal weight (I think I’m at the same weight I was last December!! bah!) I did get myself on the right track. I started running and exercising regularly and I feel like I’ve really set myself up for accomplishing my 2013 goals! I hope!! I think I need to work on not comparing myself to others too. That’s a good one!
abby says
I didn’t really set any running goals for 2012, but 2013 is a new year! Congrats on a 3:53!
Erin says
I loved reading about all of your goals. It makes me feel like a little bit of a slacker because I don’t write any goals down but I do hold myself accountable about my workouts and weight on a daily basis. I guess that is considered meeting a goal at the end of the year if I have accomplished that!
Sarah says
Great job on your goals!!! I did pretty good with my goals in 2012. I planned to run one 5K and actually fit in 4! Sure there are plenty that I didn’t accomplish and they will be added to the list for 2013.
Sue says
2012 was a run destination year for me and I’m so glad I made those trips either solo or with friends.
GreenGirlRunning says
What an awesome year you had! Great goals, progress and accomplishments! I made the goal of running a marathon, then ended up running two, PR’d in all distances and got to know some great new running friends!
Be Fearless…I need to remember that one in 2013 🙂
Blogging Runner says
It looks like you’ve had an awesome and amazing year! I’m jealous of all you’ve done and accomplished!
Shay @ Whine Less, Breathe More says
I like the idea of keeping the goals somewhere visible like that. Because honestly, I don’t’ even remember what my goals for 2012 were.
Gillian says
Congrats on reaching some of your goals! I’ve been enjoying reading your blog and I’m inspired by your progress in your marathon race times. My first was 4:13 then second was 4:19 when I was hoping to be faster. I’ve learned a lot about running and training and after having an all around tough 2012 one of my goals for 2013 is to PR in both the half and full marathon. I also want to eat better, sleep more, and spend more quality time with my husband and our Labrador retriever! Here’s to a happy, healthy new year 🙂
Abby @ Change of Pace says
Aw- great recap of your goals. I think you did awesome this year!
I never make resolutions, but this post kind of made me want to. It’s good to strive for some things and not know if you’ll achieve them or not. But at least you’re working towards positives!
I only had one real goal- get to the start line of IM Canada, which I did and finished well too as a bonus!
Sabrina says
You had a great year! I really admire your goal to Be Fearless.
I had a rough year so my goals and personal growth (change) didn’t work out so well. I am ending the year on a high note and getting 2013 started out right.
Aaryn says
I am so with you the resolutions band wagon, I love em!
I have a few this year–some silly, some pretty serious I really would love to achieve this year.
Candice says
I love this. My New Years resolution is to Be Fearless!!!
TorontoRunner says
You’ve done VERY well this year, Monica! congrats! I’m so glad I was around and here to read about your marathon PR.
Also, what an extremely open and honest post about some really personal topics(weight, money, etc).
I love that last one – Be Fearless.I think I need to adopt that for 2013! I didn’t really set out too many specific goals for 2012. My one and only fitness goal for next year is to complete and run my first marathon!
Micheline says
I did pretty well! I surpasses my goal of finally running a half marathon and ended up running two!! I even surprised myself by getting a time under 2 hours(:
