Hello! How are you? How was your June? It’s July 1st which means something very important to my fellow goal setters out there:
The year is half way over and we should check in with our 2016 Goals
How are you doing with your goals and resolutions for this year?
My 2016 Goals:
1. Run 2016 miles. Yes, I want to run the year!
Status: To run 2,016 miles in one year (52 weeks) you need to average 40 miles a week. I’ve been averaging around there between 34 and 40 miles per week and sometimes more than 40. So I am on track but I need to keep better account of all my miles. I think my major issue isn’t going to be not running all the mileage but not keeping proper track and not having ‘proof’ if only just for myself.
I can run for hours, but can’t take 2 seconds to write it down. <- maybe I should work on that next year!
2. PR in the marathon. I just have to go all out and get comfortable being uncomfortable running.
Status: I’m training for a marathon right now and aiming for 1 speed or temp run a week AND getting into higher mileage. I’m happy with my consistency not so much my speed. I also might have to think about losing weight because my marathon PRs were when I was about 10 pounds lighter. I’m not in as good of shape as I was when I PR-ed and that came with a lot of races and mileage – which takes time since I don’t want to get injured.
But I’m working on it and feel like I’m going to make good progress toward this goal by the end of the year just not maybe by my next few races (I have one in July and one in August). I think it’s going to take me about 6 months to build back up to my PR level so it’s still do-able but will take a lot of work.
3. Get on a budget and save 20% of my income.
Status: I have not really done anything about this. I signed up for QuickBooks to keep track of expenses and payments and invoices but haven’t budgeted to save money. I’m going to do that today.
I am also considering not buying any new casual clothes for the rest of the year. I discovered a lot of clothes I had in storage recently (I put in there when I made my capsule wardrobe ) and I should wear those before buying anything else. Maybe not a 100% no-buy rule but putting a big limit on it.
4. TBD I’m thinking about spending more time with the people I love. They are kinda great.
Status: Since I have been studying for my health coaching certification I spent a lot of my extra time on that. Now that the lectures and tests are done I want to visit my mom and lil brother and my niece once a week.
Last month I did cook Blue Apron with Matt & we’re going to hang out for a whole week soon when my parents go on a cruise. I’m sure he’ll be super sick of me at the end of that!
Bonus: I also randomly said I want to learn how to start a fire with basic materials like sticks and maybe a fire starter in the woods.
Status: I watch a lot of Naked and Afraid and still have no idea how to survive in the wild.
But I am going to ask my other brother since he just went to Yosemite if he learned anything about surviving in the wild.
Since I’m reviewing my goals, I might as well review my month…
Best RUN EAT and REPEAT from June
Best RUN
The day I got to Florida and FELL on my run, but then saw three manatees and it made my entire life better.
I also had a really good tempo run last week that I mentioned on Instagram but not here. Follow along there for randomness and running.
Best EAT
This Easy S’mores Dip is so easy and delicious.
Best post I’d like to REPEAT
Why Food Addiction is Worse than Other Addictions
That Time I Was Attacked in Florida
And finally I should share why I was locked inside my house today…
When I opened up the door this morning to go running I saw a spider web going from the wall in front of my door to the bush on the side of it. It was a multi-layer spider web right in front of my door completely blocking my path.
There was a small line of spider web yesterday too and I just swiped it away. But today there was a lot more stringy web – that spider came back with a vengeance! This time I had to go back inside to get something to wipe it out of the way.
Picture this: the one random redhead runner girl in the complex stepping outside her apartment… she stops and stares at something in front of her (but you don’t see anything). She turns around, goes back inside and comes out with a wad of paper towels. Then she frantically waves the paper towels in the air in front of her for no obvious reason. Then steps back inside for a second, returns without the paper towels and finally runs off like a weirdo.
I say this because after doing my invisible spider web dance I saw a guy in the parking lot across from my front door just standing there staring at me confused. Ha!
That is my life.

I have a goal to save money/work on my budget this year, and just started YNAB… it’s a different type of budgeting philosophy but I have heard SO many good things. 🙂

I’m trying to run the year as well. I’m at 1,101.4 miles right now, so I’m on track. I’m trying to build a cushion of miles in case I injure something later in the year (fingers crossed that that doesn’t happen). It’s always a good idea to save more $$$. Trust me, it builds up over time. Keep up the posts, I enjoy them!

Made no official goals so I’m doing great lol.
But I have been better at waking up in the morning so I don’t have to rush to get ready for work.
And I’m doing great at getting new injuries. My hip is sore and so is my knee and my ankle and. Oh wait this doesn’t answer the question.

Sally!! This was my June too ha!! No real goals but less rushing in the morning. We’ve got it now!

One of my goals this year is to PR in the half but I’ve had a lot of set backs this month that have impacted my training. I’ve found it hard to get my motivation back now and hope I’m able to have a successful half this August.

Happy 4th of July Monica. You are an inspiration! I walk 10-15 miles a day with my job and I am a beginning runner. It is so HOT here. Love trail “runs” I’m a busy busy mom. Love your blog!!

40 miles a week is like running 8 miles 5 times a week! Gyaaaaaaaa! I am running about 6k maybe 5 times a week so 30k. I look up to you.

Thanks! It took me a long time to build up to this kind of mileage 🙂
Have a good one 🙂

This year’s goal- 1. Run more trails- we went on 2 trail runs and did 1 trail race. More to come!
2. Enjoy the races (any kind)- yes, after my first full marathon, the next race was the great aloha run and that was amazing. So far, I’ve enjoyed all the races this year!
3. Be more consistent with the runs, yoga, and strength training- woohoo. I’m on a good roll with this one except in April when the entire family got sick for like 4 weeks (one after another).
4. Budget- this one needs a little more work. We’re spending so much on our runs (races, shoes, etc.)

Trail runs are so hard! Good job on that!!
I need to get on budgeting too!!
