Hello! How’s it going? I need your help with a potential running injury I might have. And in return for your advice I will a.) not post too many pics of dead animals today AND b.) share a great running playlist for Spring. Boom. We all win!
This morning Vegas and I woke up ready to conquer the world or at least the sidewalk for a run…
I should have know it wasn’t going to be a good run when I spotted this sleeping squirrel on the path. Today he is my spirit animal. RIP.
(See? Only one pic of a dead animal. I just promised ‘not too many’.)
Anyway. Let’s talk about my running pain…
My ankle hurts right here where I’m pointing when I run, but doesn’t hurt when I walk. It feels like a bruise is being pressed on hard. I actually checked a few times at first if I indeed had a bruise there or if my shoe was rubbing – nope.
Have you ever dealt with something like this? Thoughts?
Now here is a list of some great running songs to add to your playlist…

Please stop posting pictures of dead animals on your blog 🙁 There is really no point in doing it.
I love your blog, and I would be really bummed if I had to stop reading it. But seeing a picture of a dead animal is really upsetting to me, and I’ll have to unsubscribe if you keep posting them.

I have been running almost 20 years and have had a few injuries, usually bad shoes or too much road running. I had that pain before and it was shinsplints. Yes I know shin splints is a term for shin pain of many causes. If it was a stress fracture you would not be able to put a load on it so walking probably eliminates that. If you can stand on one leg without pain and it only hurts when you run then the injury is muscles. Constant pain would be another issue. Rest it. I would actually only ice right after a run. Otherwise I would heat it to increase blood flow. Do some light massaging unless it hurts to the touch. Not deep hard massage as the muscle is already sore. Don’t stretch either. The muscle is already sore. Get better cushioned shoes. Don’t do any biking while recovering. Walk on and run on gravel trails if you can. If it still hurts after 2 weeks, yes 2 weeks, then go see a gp to get an xray. Muscles can take a long time to heal once they are trained enough to hurt like that. Once you can run again do strengthening, toe curls and toes to shin raises and stretch but not before.

o0o I’m not a runner but I feel like this playlist is awesome for working out in general. Thanks–I needed some new songs!

So am I the only person wondering how the squirrel died on the sidewalk? Like, the road I get…but the sidewalk? Did he fall, get run over by a careless biker, was he sick of the squirrel life and just had to end it? I’m curious.
I have pain in my ankle there too and have been told it is anterior tibialis tendinitis. It usually doesn’t hurt when I am running but afterward. And if I try to move my ankle too far, you know when you do things just to see if you can make stuff hurt. Why we do it I don’t know. But whatevs. I have found more arch support while running has helped a lot.

Ankle pain when you run…sounds like impact injury or strain from over-use. I love yoga and my instructor has us do specific stretches for our feet, ankles and toes. There are a number of things we do, where we sit on our feet to stretch them out. Try these with some ice to help keep inflammation down.
GREAT play list. I have several of these songs on my playlist, including My House, No and Cake By the Ocean (also my favorite). I like Fetty Wap’s I’m Straight. It’s a bit off kilter for my normal taste in music, but it adds a bit of rhythm for me which I really enjoy.

I’m a physical therapist and mostly agree with what those above me have said- likely tendinitis of the anterior tibialis muscle (which acts to bring your foot towards your head and also controls the rate at which your knee flexes and foot comes down during the landing phase of running (we call this “loading response” and “weight acceptance”). With running your muscles have to work harder to control this motion, esp if running down a lot of hills. Rest (walking or slow jogging if non painful), ice, elevation and gentle massage to the ankle and calf muscles, progressing to ankle strengthening against minimal resistance in all planes of motion (bending foot up/down/in/out) and eccentric ankle work (e.g practice controlling foot and knee motion by walking downhill and uphill backwards). Hope this helps! Of course if it keeps up go see your doctor!

Thank you Claire, I appreciate all these suggestions 🙂

Sounds very much like tendonitis to me and something I have dealt with on and off for years. R.I.C.E. method works best and if it isn’t better in a few days, I would suggest you see your doctor. Tendonitis is tricky and if that’s what it is, you definitely want to get a handle on it sooner than later.
I’m not a doctor, I just play one on TV. (Okay not really, but seriously, it does sound a lot like tendonitis.)

could be the beginning of shin splints which usually makes me question if you’ve recently changed shoes and they’re not working for you, you need new shoes, you’ve increased hill training or you’ve been wearing a lot of flip flops or heels.

I have started having pain like that on my ankle too. I have no idea what it is or what’s causing it. I’ve tried to massage it and I would not recommend that. It made it hurt worse! I started taping it. I’m sure it’s not the right way, but I just wrap a piece of KT tape around my ankle where it hurts and pull it tight and then there is no more pain!

I’ve been obsessed with Cake By The Ocean. I actually have it 3X on my playlist so it repeats about every 25 minutes for my long runs. HA!
Hmm…I had pain a little to the left of where you are pointing and it felt like a bruise. I kept thinking I had tied my laces too tight. It didn’t hurt when walking in the early stages but eventually I was limping. It turned out to be peroneal tendonitis. But again, mine was more to the left of where you are pointing. When anything by the foot/ankle hurts i always stretch and foam roll my calf muscles a ton. I’d advise wearing comfortable shoes 24/7 Don’t wear flip flops. Take some time off your feet. Ice etc. If it doesn’t feel better go see dr.

I am not a M.D. or a sports medicine person, but here’s my diagnosis. I think you might have leprosy. You should quarantine yourself for public health’s sake. I’m sure that Vegas will go out and forage for you….All kidding aside, I have had that same issue when I have had my shoes tied too tight. Check that first. If it’s still an issue, give yourself a few days rest. If it’s still a problem after that, check with your doctor and not a bunch of us goobers on the internet. I’m just sayin….
Richard Wall says
Just so you know. I’m kidding about the leprosy thing. I don’t really think you have that. I just have a warped sense of humor. My problem really, not yours.

I had that once, I thought it was from the tongue of my shoe being too tight! It went away after awhile though! Hope it gets better!

Yesterday at my cycle class the instructor played Lollipop by Mika….I think he said its been around a while but it was the first time I had heard it….love it!
Susan says
Could be a stress fracture. I had the same pain in the same spot only when I ran or drove my car. My ortho says it is common in women runners. I would rest for a few days.

My new favorite song is “Wait for It” off the “Hamilton” Broadway soundtrack. I ran 3 miles on the treadmill last week with just that song on repeat (and I run S..L…O….W…!) 🙂 I have a date with the treadmill and that song again tonight!
Sorry, no advice on the ankle. I’ve messed up every other part of my body than there!
