Run Eat Repeat

Am I weird or is the Ralphs guy weird?

Hello! How are you doing? The lovely people at Nathan are giving one RER reader my favorite running hand held water bottle and belt for all your summer running needs. Enter at the bottom of this post! But first let’s talk running and eating and all that stuff.

nathan water bottle and fuel belt running (800x450)

Okay there is a lot of randomness today . I guess that’s how it is every day. I’m used to it.

I went to Ralph’s earlier for some necessities (read as: seltzer, Sriracha, cashews and whatever else I randomly throw in).

Did I tell you I have a friend who works at Ralphs?

Yeah.

One time one of the employees walked up to me and said, “I see you run on the path everyday. I live in the apartments right next to it.”

I didn’t really think it was a big deal, but was a little embarrassed since I’m not a very attractive runner and am always blowing my nose in my shirt and taking very LOUD phone calls mid-run.

Luckily, being a blogger for so long has killed any pride I had and I am kind of okay with looking like a booger faced weirdo.

But the next time I saw him he was like, “How was your run today?”

This is a problem.

But probably not for the reason you think.

If you ask me about running I will enthusiastically talk about it. Um, my full time job could be considered a ‘running food blogger’ (depending on the day) so I truly LOVE talking about running and eating and everything it entails. Get me in a food store, talking about running and I’ll never stop!

Moral of the story: If you give a mouse a cookie he’s going to want a glass of milk. If you ask a Monican about running she’s going to talk about running even if you were only doing it to be nice and don’t really care about running now you’re stuck in a conversation with a  very loud Mexican who loves marathons and ice cream.

Speaking of weird stuff at the store…

Why did Fage create all these new savory flavors of yogurt?  There was one with tomato or something the other day that was on clearance. We get it, yogurt is fancy and Mediterranean and therefore healthy. But I am neither fancy nor Mediterranean so I don’t want to try it.

this is not a good idea (450x800)

I grabbed one of the ones with chocolate chips. It was amazing.

chocolate and yogurt (450x800)

I also saw a sign at the store for milk but it was playing off of the latest internet food obsession = fancy toast.

And one of the toasts featured looked like it was PB with bacon. Have you tried this combo?? I am going to try it tomorrow!!

Nathan Sports Hydration Bottle Giveaway

I prefer handheld water bottles over waist packs or camel back style ones for marathon training. I know they don’t hold as much water, but they don’t bounce and it just seems easier to drink on the go. I have tried so many different water bottles and fuel belts and packs in the past but ultimately I love this one:

nathan fuel belt giveaway 1

I have also been digging the Nathan Sports belt to hold my phone. It doesn’t bounce and is easy to wear and wash (but I don’t wash it that often just when it stinks too bad).

I’ve been wearing a black one and Mr. Nathan (or is that his first name?) sent me a pink one. This made me so happy. It’s the little things Smile

The lovely people at Nathan Sports are giving one RER reader a running belt and water bottle. If you aren’t familiar with these running must haves this might change your life! (Enter below to win.)

Also… I saw this running encouragement  on my run and wanted to share.

Is it sad if I write my own encouragement in chalk on my running routes??

Is it normal for you to jump into a conversation with them on your training, fuel, favorite socks, anything else…

So normal, actually motivates me. I work at banana republic, and my customers recognize me running, and compliment me, thinking I’m always going the distance. So I just play with them, and say oh yeah, I ran 15 miles that day, even if it was just 5, lol. Reminds you if you have to stop and walk, someone is watching. more than just the man upstairs.

That water bottle looks great! I don’t get comments after the fact, but I’ve finished up runs and talked to other pedestrians at stoplights. Apparently my bright red, sweaty face is a good conversation starter. 😉

The guy at Ralph’s is better than the guy that I see on the running path along the dry wash by my apartment. He has told me multiple times as he rides his bike past me that I “look great in the morning…” I don’t respond and keep running. There are a lot of people on the path, so I never feel too bothered. I’ve changed my route and time, and I still see him! It’s weird. In other news, I love Nathan products! It’s a great company.

Yes! I always hear it in my small town. “How many miles did you run last week?” And “What race are you training for this season?” It’s okay. I’m about the only one in town that runs, so it’s okay.

I live in a small town where if you run in public, people are bound to say something! So far, just friendly curiosity and conversation starters, nothing creepy. It’s the “all the time” part that makes it sound stalker-ish.

I just had to throw out a leaky handheld – it would drip all over my hand until there was nothing left in it to drip. It seemed like I was losing half of my water that way. I’m in Arizona so I’m only treadmill running now, but eventually I need a new handheld.

I live in the middle of nowhere where hardly anyone runs and I’m also newish so I don’t know anyone. So no random conversations about running 🙁 I thinks it’s a great way to break the ice!

I wish I could run so frequently that someone would notice….stupid stress fractures keep getting me down. Though I do notice others who routinely run by me. I’d be too shy and feel too stalker-y to actually strike up a conversation with them about it. Especially since (at least in my part of LA) all of the dudes have suddenly starting running shirtless (that true in your part, too?). Maybe if I get that water bottle, I could just start squirting them as they run by. That’d get their attention 😉

I am sort of a health and wellness coordinator for the manufacturing facility that I work at. All the time I have employees coming up to me talking about how they saw me out running with my husband, my dogs or both. I think it’s just the first step for them talking about fitness. Of course I delve into why I’m running or an upcoming 5k that they could at least walk in or something along those lines. Even if I’m out at a pub, I have people come and talk to us about how they always see us running.

I would be mortified if someone said they recognized me from running. Mostly because my hair is all frizzy and i’m not wearing anything really cute. Plus i would be left wondering how often is this guy looking out his window that he just happens to see me? Does he spend his mornings looking for me? That makes him sound like a creepy stalker.

I think that’s really nice of him to ask 🙂 It may depend on where you live… in the Midwest, where my husband is from, everyone is so friendly and will easily strike up conversations with strangers. It’s totally normal for them to want to connect! In California, where I grew up, stranger danger is my initial reaction when people I don’t know start talking to me. Feels like we were trained to start reaching for our pepper spray upon approach! I’m trying to adopt the more relaxing and friendly approach from the Midwest. 🙂 xo Kelly http://lazygirlsguidetofitnessandbeauty.blogspot.com/

I wish I had a dollar for every time someone says to me: I see you running on “fill in the blank” street. When I see my neighbors I expect it…but people at my gym, the deli, random strangers in the supermarket, my yoga teachers, doctors. And I get texts and social media posts from my friends telling me they saw me on the road ALL THE TIME!
It makes me think I’m either the only person that runs in my town or I’m the only one who is ALWAYS running in my town?

The best are when people honk at me….as if I know who they are as they whiz by me and Im just trying not to become roadkill.

Love the Nathan handheld! Mine is a little, um…funky and should probably be replaced. I would swoon for pink!!!

I’ve never had someone say they’ve seen me running, although once I was walking my friend’s huge dog, and it saw a squirrel and took off, dragging me behind it. My neighbor then felt it was his duty to point out I needed a smaller dog. So there’s that.

I love “the regulars” haha…I don’t know if I would like someone saying that they saw me running because it was likely a very unflattering version of myself, all red and sweaty 🙂 But it also instills a sense of pride in me. Yes I get up in the morning to do something for ME. Yes I am taking care of my body and my mind by getting out there and breaking a sweat…that’s the best part! xo

People that live in my neighborhood say something to me about seeing me run constantly. Probably because I’m one of one a few who run in my neighborhood.

Of course once they say something I’m sure they instantly regret it because my brain instantly goes into my ‘running encyclopedia’ mode. It’s scary for them. I’m quite sure of it.

I live in a small town so people see me running all the time. I avoid eye contact if a car is coming that looks familiar so I can pretend like I didn’t see them wave. Does that make me a horrible person? I always question if they are thinking boy, she’s running slow, acccck, put on a better sport bra lady, or hmmm, she better pick it up.

Yesterday I took my 2-year-old daughter to a splash park and a couple middle school girls asked if she was mine. I said yes, then they asked how old I was. When I told them I’m in my 30’s, they said they thought I was a teenager. Then they asked me if I “jog a lot.” I refrained from correcting their use of the term “jog” but also took it as a really big compliment. There is still hope for our youth!

Not very much people tell me they see me running. However, every time I hit the road I see the same people exercising. So, I’m completely sure they see me running.

And yes, I jump into a conversation about running ALL the time. Even if my friends don’t ask me anything, lol.

Hmm. I think it depends on how creepy the vibe is when they say they see you all the time. if there is zero creep factor, or very minimal, then i’m cool with it. If its a little weird, I don’t continue the convo much. In my last town, my family has lived there forever, so folks who saw me actually knew who I was (so-and-so’s granddaughter, etc) – so that was a-ok. Love the belt – looks awesome!

I read an article recently about those savory yogurts. Apparently yogurt makers are trying to break away from the morning/breakfast stereotype and are hoping people will also reach for yogurt for lunch, in the afternoon, for dinner, etc… hence the more savory and less sweet flavor. Not appealing to me either!

I too have switched my preferences to hand-held bottles. I’d be interested in seeing how that belt worked for those of us with larger hips. I stopped using a belt for water bottles because it would ride up my waist line while running.

I run with my 4 dogs (and sometimes a foster thrown in there) so I have had people say to me around town “Hey your’e the (crazy!) lady running with all those dogs”. There is probably a reason why people don’t ask me about running! I could go on and on… I have a fuel belt with the 4 bottle attached to it and at the end of a long run, it feel so good to get that thing off. A hand held is a great option.

I love when people ask me about my run or training. I also have to rein in the talk when people are just being polite. Luckily my SO is always happy to hear my run recap. I’m in the market for a new running belt and that one looks awesome!

I think it’s a good idea to change our running routes, times we run ,etc up a bit because otherwise it can get very easy for someone to be there knowing you will be running. I know I get into the same routine but sometimes it becomes a safety issue. Just be careful:-)

I have had people say they saw me running and at first I found it a little creepy/awkward, but then I saw a co-worker running and mentioned it to them and realized I was now that person! It was someone I didn’t know ran and so I felt it was cool we had that in common and could chat about running. Hopefully they don’t find me too wierd 😉

Totally normal, especially if you tend to stick to the same route. I usually only get questions/comments when I veer away from my usual schedule/route, like when one of the Starbucks baristas mentioned not seeing me one morning – apparently he walks to work and uses the same path I use for my long runs.

My students see me running on our local river trail all the time. At first I was embarrassed because I am not a pretty runner, but I started thinking it was good for them to see me out and active; not all students in my area have role models that value healthy living.

I’m with you! I cannot stand a water belt that bounces up and down. It’s so hot here in East Tennessee, that I do have to take water on afternoon runs. I have a nice belt, but the bouncing drives me nuts. I would love to win this handheld bottle—much easier to carry and Nathan products are the best!

I came across your blog about two weeks ago while doing searches for random running things. I am quite addicted and can’t wait for your next posts to come. It’s like having a new friend that understands where I’m at with the joys of running, the frustrations of losing weight and the struggles with food. I am basically starting over and slowly increasing my mileage, while being mindful to my injuries. I am always searching for great items that will improve everything about my running life. It’s hard to try everything to find the right thing, so your help is appreciated. I can’t wait for your next post. 🙂 Happy running!

I have a funny response to this: I am super observant and aware of my surroundings as a result I notice people around me a lot. This sounds really strange but it is just how I am. I NEVER EVER mention that I have seen someone before if I meet them at a later point. It just sounds really weird. It even sounds weird in this comment.

I don’t think it is weird for someone to say they see you running. I run the same route most of the time and it good to know that people see me. I live outside of Chicago and it helps me feel safe. I would love to win the belt and water bottle. Actually, my BFF has started to lose weight and wants to start walking. I would use the belt on my run and then circle back around and do a walk with her. I would give her the water bottle as encouragement to walk. We all need support.

Well, I hope its normal because I strike up these random conversations with members at my Y! Whenever, I see someone out biking, running, cycling and then see them at the Y ~ I tell them ~ “Hey, I saw you over by my house running! Way to go! etc…”Sometimes the conversations dies right there in an awkward sort of stalking way but other times we continue to have a nice conversation. 😉

I don’t know how I’d feel if someone told me they always saw me running. Proud? Creeped out? It might depend on how public of a path it is. If I was running somewhere pretty remote, I think I’d be uncomfortable with it, but on a super public path it might just be funny.
