snack showdown turkey sandwich vs granola bar

September is self improvement month and Oroweat has challenged me to share something that I am trying to better in my life.

If you have been reading for more than two days you may have realized I am a bad snacker. “Bad” as in I snack a lot, I snack mindlessly, I get chip crumbs everywhere, I hoard snacks in my purse…

eat this not that snacks

I could go on but I’m sure you’re reading this while you should be working/studying/picking up the kids so I’ll get to the point:

My snacking habit is a sad scar left from my starve/binge days in college. (Nutshell: I would try to ‘diet’ by eating 500 calories all day. Then, I would come home after class and attack the kitchen like Miley attacks a foam finger.)

I don’t do the restrict part any more, but since I’m a little sensitive about it, I don’t give myself a ‘good’ snack when I’m hungry in the afternoon. Instead  I often graze too much instead of satisfying my needs.

Since I’m a volume eater I like snacks that are about 200-300 calories but feel like a lot of food. Enter: A sandwich.

My friend Dan the UPS guy delivered a package full of Arnold products a few afternoons ago. I already had lunch, but wanted to eat some of my new stash so I made a turkey sandwich on Sandwich Thins.

The Best Afternoon Snack for your diet

Hello pretty food, how are you?

The Best Afternoon Snack for your diet

Boom. Delicious snack all for this Monican.

post run turkey sandwich snack

This sandwich was under 250 calories too!

image

That’s less than the bar I was going to have!

IMG_3583 (800x533)

So my better is to eat a healthy, delicious snack that will make me feel good and satisfied. (Note: I’m not anti-that bar. I like a lil granola bar every now and then, it’s just that a whole sandwich is a lot more satisfying.)

Oroweat is working with Ali Sweeney to help Americans “Feed Your Better” too! Share your better on the Feed Your Better site and you can win up to $20,000!

Question: Do you eat the same snacks every day?

I’ll go through phases of eating the same thing for a few weeks and then switch it up randomly.

Disclaimer: I am partnering with Oroweat on this post. The company sent me bread and dough for it. All opinions are my own.

I am similar when it comes to eating habits, and I never know what a justifiable or good-sized snack is and so I will snack until I am full. But those thins are perfect for a snack.

And I am definitely a person who changes it up depending on how I feel!

I’m a ridiculous snacker – a lot of days I find myself snacking constantly instead of having an actual meal. There is a lot of granola bar action going on, which is a big weakness of mine – other than those, I mainly stick to fruit and hummus/veggie things.

I’m trying to stop running to the sweets cabinet when I get home from work. I tend to reach for cookies or waffers….hopefully I can still be tame since fall is coming around! Ultimate sweet month! :/

I love sandwich thins, they’re so versatile. I usually snack on a KIND bar, almonds, and dried fruit throughout the day.

Sounds like we have the same snacking habits! I love to snack but that comes from always feeling hungry! I hate it at times. My go to afternoon snacks are granola bars/Clif bars but I love your suggestion about the turkey sandwich…

Those sandwich thins are awesome! My mom bought some the last time she visited (I normally don’t do a whole lot of bread) and I ended up using them for burgers, tuna melts, almond butter repository units … delicious. They were super soft, but not overly bread-y since they are so thin.

I really don’t snack. If I’m hungry I’d rather just eat a meal. If I need a little something to get me to a meal-obtaining place I might have a latte or some almonds. Super healthy, I know.

I eat lunch at 1 and usually don’t have dinner til around 8 or later, so afternoon snacks are a huge necessity for me. My main snacks are: some sort of veggie, sometimes hummus, sometimes just plain, a piece of fruit, and some nuts. Some hungry days I’ll have some sort of crackers or semi-healthy chips. If I’m eating out, I’ll try to overorder just a little for lunch, so I have part of it for a snack later.

I have some go-to snacks, but try to change things up by bringing some different things home when shopping. BUT . . . I have a “formula” for most snacks – must have protein, hopefully a good dose of fiber/whole grain goodness, and/or a fruit/veg – any 2 of the 3. This leaves me lots of options!

I’ll admit to a mix of good and not-so-good snacks. I order graze boxes: little healthy snack boxes posted to your door: a mixture of things like dried fruit, nuts, seeds and small but healthy-ish cakes. They’re delish! I also snack on fruit; and on popcorn, chocolate and crisps 😉

I tend to gravitate toward the same snacks as well.

I burned out HARD on those sandwich thins–got so bad I couldn’t even look at them. Oh wellzzzz

i fall in the protein and granola bar trap almost daily at work. they’re just so easy and if we’re being real here (and we already talked about miley and her finger, so we are) the bars i enjoy most are just candy bars with protein to be honest. pb, chocolate, and 20 grams of protein. that sandwich would probably be a LOT more satisfying. . .

I know the granola bar is quick and easy but when you put them side by side the sandwich even looks much more appetizing even without the nutritional information. The nutritional info is just a bonus.

*currently stuffing face with usual first snack of the day: almonds*

My at-work snacks tend to stay the same…almonds, apple sauce and homemade granola and a Luna bar. I guess I know what I like and what works for me, so I stick with it.

In the evening, give me anything with chocolate.

I’m actually going through the same thing right now! I’m a mindless snacker, so I’m trying to replace one snack a day with something healthier and more filling. I know that not snacking isn’t an option for me, so I’m trying to adopt a “small changes make a big difference” mindset.

switch up the snacks.. when i’m being really bad for craving sweet stuff, i try to dampen it by making a batch of homemade hummus in 3 or 4 different flavors (I’m wild like that) and having that with carrots as a snack

I’m a huge snacker too! I guess I fall into that category of eating few calories and then binging on any snack I can find! (after a 60lb loss, I still haven’t mastered the whole living healthy thing)

But something I try to do is keep almonds, rice crackers and fruit infront of me so I make the right choices!
