The New York City Marathon is coming up November 2nd. I ran the race last year and it was the BEST!!! Everything from the starting line to the crowd to the ‘grand finale’ finish in Central Park made the race one of the most memorable ever. I loved every single mile – even the .2 too!
Poland Spring is the official bottled water of the 2014 New York City Marathon and I am working with them to CHEERS all this year’s runners! I have partnered with the company to share some of my tips for keeping hydration a priority before the big race!
Hydration Tips for Running The New York City Marathon:
1. Go into the race weekend well hydrated. I think a common mistake is for runners to drink a lot on race morning/race day – but you can help your body by showing up to the start line well rested and well hydrated.
Keep your usual hydration habits even if you are traveling and sightseeing over the weekend!
2. Pay attention to the color of your pee. Aim for a lemonade-y color. You don’t want that to go to dark or too light!
3. Walk through aid stations. If you haven’t mastered the ‘grab-and-go’ method of running through the water stations – slow down, grab a cup, walk and drink it.
Getting de-hydrated may hurt your time as much as walking through a few aid stations!
Yes that’s water in my glass – champagne is for the celebration after

Question: Did you drink enough water today?
(Enough is a healthy amount based on your body and activity level.)

Always. I aim for about 80 ounces a day; that’s just regular water. Also love some sparkly bubble water with dinner. 🙂

So excited to run the race in 10 days!!! WOOP WOOP!!!
I believe you ran with team Asics last year…that is what I’m doing this year. Looking forward to it and thanks for the hydration tips. Going to grab water now.

I did NOT drink enough water today. I gotta hydrate from drinking a bottle of wine last night… Hey I had a rough week
Alisha @ Real Girl Running says
Ummm, no, I haven’t had enough water … I maybe drank 4 glasses of water, and probably had 2 cups of coffee. But hey, in the past I would have had 2 glasses of water and 4 cups of coffee, so I’m working on improving! 🙂
Although to your point about what is ‘enough’ water, I really struggle with that concept! I have never really drunk a lot of water – or a lot of liquid in general. There is a lot of talk around the fact that you should drink 2 litres a day, but I would never get close to that, and I would like to say I don’t think I have signs of dehydration. I try to drink a bit more before and after tough workouts, but it really does seem to be an individual thing.

Yeah, I think it’s similar to food and exercise – we are all so different! The pee test is probably the easiest way for people to see what is working for them, but you gotta do what works for YOU. I’m glad you chimed in on this 🙂

I have never gone further than a 5k and had to pee so badly when I was done, so I can only imagine what it would be like during a marathon for me. Haha

You can stop along the way 🙂

Another race that is on my bucket list! Eventually I’ll run another marathon. For now I am happy with my half marathon. Today have definitely not drank enough water. Fail 🙁

I like listening to you talk, please make more videos! 🙂 I’m also on youtube under deefitty.

I have a VLOG coming up today! Check it out 🙂
Sally @ sweat out the small stuff says
Fail. I only had about 20 oz all day.
That’s awesome about the videos. I’ll actually be at the expo this year. I’m not running the marathon this year (I ran it last year) but I am doing their 5k dash to the finish line the day before and we have to pick up our race numbers at the expo. I’ll be there on the 31st. Will definitely do a video. I am spectating this year!!!! So excited to cheer my friends at mile 22!!!
