September is self improvement month and Oroweat has challenged me to share something that I am trying to better in my life.
If you have been reading for more than two days you may have realized I am a bad snacker. “Bad” as in I snack a lot, I snack mindlessly, I get chip crumbs everywhere, I hoard snacks in my purse…
I could go on but I’m sure you’re reading this while you should be working/studying/picking up the kids so I’ll get to the point:
My snacking habit is a sad scar left from my starve/binge days in college. (Nutshell: I would try to ‘diet’ by eating 500 calories all day. Then, I would come home after class and attack the kitchen like Miley attacks a foam finger.)
I don’t do the restrict part any more, but since I’m a little sensitive about it, I don’t give myself a ‘good’ snack when I’m hungry in the afternoon. Instead I often graze too much instead of satisfying my needs.
Since I’m a volume eater I like snacks that are about 200-300 calories but feel like a lot of food. Enter: A sandwich.
My friend Dan the UPS guy delivered a package full of Arnold products a few afternoons ago. I already had lunch, but wanted to eat some of my new stash so I made a turkey sandwich on Sandwich Thins.
Hello pretty food, how are you?
Boom. Delicious snack all for this Monican.
This sandwich was under 250 calories too!
That’s less than the bar I was going to have!
So my better is to eat a healthy, delicious snack that will make me feel good and satisfied. (Note: I’m not anti-that bar. I like a lil granola bar every now and then, it’s just that a whole sandwich is a lot more satisfying.)
Oroweat is working with Ali Sweeney to help Americans “Feed Your Better” too! Share your better on the Feed Your Better site and you can win up to $20,000!
Question: Do you eat the same snacks every day?
I’ll go through phases of eating the same thing for a few weeks and then switch it up randomly.
Disclaimer: I am partnering with Oroweat on this post. The company sent me bread and dough for it. All opinions are my own.
Chloe@SearchingForAHealthierLife says
I am similar when it comes to eating habits, and I never know what a justifiable or good-sized snack is and so I will snack until I am full. But those thins are perfect for a snack.
And I am definitely a person who changes it up depending on how I feel!
Brittani says
I’m a ridiculous snacker – a lot of days I find myself snacking constantly instead of having an actual meal. There is a lot of granola bar action going on, which is a big weakness of mine – other than those, I mainly stick to fruit and hummus/veggie things.
Jody - Fit at 55 says
Love this! I eat way fewer bars then when I was younger & now make my own! 🙂
Got to say I have been watching Ali on Days for over 40 years on & off.. my mom got me hooked! 🙂 Well, not Ali but the show but have seen her evolve as she started on their at 16 I think….
Nicole says
I pretty much stick to apples, pretzels, Pure Organic Bars, maybe a handfull of nuts.
Floey says
I’m trying to stop running to the sweets cabinet when I get home from work. I tend to reach for cookies or waffers….hopefully I can still be tame since fall is coming around! Ultimate sweet month! :/
Nikki @ grab your kicks says
I love sandwich thins, they’re so versatile. I usually snack on a KIND bar, almonds, and dried fruit throughout the day.
Rhoda @3cheaprunners.com says
Sounds like we have the same snacking habits! I love to snack but that comes from always feeling hungry! I hate it at times. My go to afternoon snacks are granola bars/Clif bars but I love your suggestion about the turkey sandwich…
Christine @ BookishlyB says
I go through phases. Right now I’m obsessed with reduced fat Wheat Thins and whipped cream cheese.
Emily says
Those sandwich thins are awesome! My mom bought some the last time she visited (I normally don’t do a whole lot of bread) and I ended up using them for burgers, tuna melts, almond butter repository units … delicious. They were super soft, but not overly bread-y since they are so thin.
I really don’t snack. If I’m hungry I’d rather just eat a meal. If I need a little something to get me to a meal-obtaining place I might have a latte or some almonds. Super healthy, I know.
quix says
I eat lunch at 1 and usually don’t have dinner til around 8 or later, so afternoon snacks are a huge necessity for me. My main snacks are: some sort of veggie, sometimes hummus, sometimes just plain, a piece of fruit, and some nuts. Some hungry days I’ll have some sort of crackers or semi-healthy chips. If I’m eating out, I’ll try to overorder just a little for lunch, so I have part of it for a snack later.
Deb says
I have some go-to snacks, but try to change things up by bringing some different things home when shopping. BUT . . . I have a “formula” for most snacks – must have protein, hopefully a good dose of fiber/whole grain goodness, and/or a fruit/veg – any 2 of the 3. This leaves me lots of options!
TartanJogger tartanjogger.wordpress.com says
I’ll admit to a mix of good and not-so-good snacks. I order graze boxes: little healthy snack boxes posted to your door: a mixture of things like dried fruit, nuts, seeds and small but healthy-ish cakes. They’re delish! I also snack on fruit; and on popcorn, chocolate and crisps 😉
Amy @ crazysweatymommy says
I usually snack on fruit—and way too much of it 🙂
Shannon in Tustin says
I always have the same breakfast (oatmeal, PB, almond milk, flax meal, banana); ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
I tend to gravitate toward the same snacks as well.
I burned out HARD on those sandwich thins–got so bad I couldn’t even look at them. Oh wellzzzz
runeatrepeat says
I used to eat them twice a day for the longest time – that’s why I hadn’t bought them in a while. I’m glad I have this stash now 🙂
Heather @ Run Eat Play says
I eat the same food all the time. I am the most boring person I know. 🙂
Taylor @ Single-tracked Mind says
I eat most of the same snacks every day…Salmon jerky, fruit, nut butter, seaweed, trail mix. I try to do a combo of protein + carb. Real food is way more filling to me than processed food!
Ashley @ BrocBlog says
I definitely prefer volume snacks also, I like to make em last.
Ashley says
i fall in the protein and granola bar trap almost daily at work. they’re just so easy and if we’re being real here (and we already talked about miley and her finger, so we are) the bars i enjoy most are just candy bars with protein to be honest. pb, chocolate, and 20 grams of protein. that sandwich would probably be a LOT more satisfying. . .
Bethany says
I have the same snacks every day. Pretzels with hummus, fruit, dry cereal. I love that is Halloween because I can get my favorite Milk Duds in little packs.
april says
i tend to eat the same snacks… mostly apples, almonds, and greek yogurt. they’re healthy, plus REALLY easy and convenient. it’s a win-win for me 😀
Julie @ RDelicious Kitchen says
Love this post!
Ps. I have the same cutting board! Mine says Julie’s Kitchen 🙂
runeatrepeat says
Yeah! Are you working with them too? I love this cutting board!!
Jessica R @ fromthekitchentotheroad says
The way you described it is exactly how I do it too. I stick to the same thing for a long while then I will randomly get tired of it and find something else to obsess over for a while.
Captain Competition says
I know the granola bar is quick and easy but when you put them side by side the sandwich even looks much more appetizing even without the nutritional information. The nutritional info is just a bonus.
Aimee - funfitgirl says
*currently stuffing face with usual first snack of the day: almonds*
My at-work snacks tend to stay the same…almonds, apple sauce and homemade granola and a Luna bar. I guess I know what I like and what works for me, so I stick with it.
In the evening, give me anything with chocolate.
Jojo @ RunFastEatLots says
I usually eat the same snacks. I got a box of fig bars from Costco, and have been eating one everyday as an afternoon snack. I also snack in the morning, after working out, and I usually have granola, Greek yogurt, and fruit.
Kelly @ Kelly Runs for Food says
I usually eat a morning snack and an afternoon snack! I have to pack snacks to bring to work with me, so it’s usually fruit, nuts, or yogurt.
Annie @ Annie Get Your Run says
I’m actually going through the same thing right now! I’m a mindless snacker, so I’m trying to replace one snack a day with something healthier and more filling. I know that not snacking isn’t an option for me, so I’m trying to adopt a “small changes make a big difference” mindset.
Hazel@ The Comfort Zone and Beyond says
switch up the snacks.. when i’m being really bad for craving sweet stuff, i try to dampen it by making a batch of homemade hummus in 3 or 4 different flavors (I’m wild like that) and having that with carrots as a snack
Amanda @ Pink Runner Girl says
I usually don’t eat lunch because I like to snack! I eat the same snacks, mostly. A Clif Bar…which looks just like that one^^ ;), greek yogurt with granola and fruit, banana warmed up with almond butter, a smoothie…so many things! I just love to eat.
Olga says
I’m a huge snacker too! I guess I fall into that category of eating few calories and then binging on any snack I can find! (after a 60lb loss, I still haven’t mastered the whole living healthy thing)
But something I try to do is keep almonds, rice crackers and fruit infront of me so I make the right choices!
Sara @ LovingOnTheRun says
I am a snacker and a grazer too! It has always been my weakness. I am trying to learn the good foods to snack on and stick to what is going to help my body just not meaningless calories!
Kathy says
THAT is just about the exact same sandwich (less the tomato) my girls take to school almost every day!! Wow…twins or something??!! ha! Those sandwich thins are the best…we have eaten them over a year now!!
Heather @fitncookies says
I tend to eat the same things. Breakfast is almost always oatmeal, but sometimes eggs and turkey bacon. Snacks can sometimes change, but usually either fruit, or pretzels, I love pretzels.
Megan says
I typically eat the same breakfast snack and lunch for a week at a time. I batch cook breakfast and lunch so I don’t have to do much thinking during the week. Dinner is the varying meal of the day!
Livi says
I eat way too many sweet snacks..! Chocolate and granola are my weakness!
Jackie says
I’m the same as you I graze way too much. I’ve finally acknowledged it and now I have to fix it!
Amy @ The Little Honey Bee says
I’m a hugeeee snacker too. After dinner is the most snacky time for me (often out of boredom) but usually when I have a plan of attack aka what I’m going to eat then it’s successful.
Running for the love of pork says
Yep! I snack on carrots and copious amounts of hommus, chobani yoghurts, crackers and fruit. I’m a big snacker too but try for healthy options as otherwise it is chips and chocolate!
