Fit to Run

Marathon

24 Oct

There is a great article in the San Jose Mercury News about the runners who have died in half marathon and marathons since September. Seven people have died trying to go the distance. It’s very sad. The article questions whether or not some people racing are really “fit to race”? Something to think about as more and more people join in the fun.

I know I’m not built like a runner. I assume that I am healthy because I am young, have been running for years, I eat very healthy, have tons of energy and feel good 🙂 But, I haven’t ever gone to a doctor and questioned my health and the tax running has on my body. Just something I’m thinking about…

This morning I slept in and let myself wake up by my own body clock around 7:15am. I had half a PB&J bagel (full size bagel) to fuel my run. I did 16 miles in 2:36:07. I had been keeping a very good pace until the last 3 miles. I ended up taking a lot of walking breaks toward the end. IMG_1966

And brought these Luna moons for the run. I don’t like these very much. I think they tasted like cough syrup. I prefer the chomps better.IMG_1967

When I got back from my 16 miles I sat in a cold water bath for a few minutes (no ice.) and then showered.

I had this protien smoothie with spinach and some Kashi Autumn Wheat cereal. I had to grab something to go because Ben and I had to run a quick errand that was time sensitive.IMG_1972 Then, came home to leftover Chinese 🙂IMG_1953

I have only a few hours to get my Halloween costume together! And I really need to do school work too! I am a little overwhelmed.

See you guys later 🙂

I’ve heard some of those running stories in the news. That is really scary to hear.

congratulations on your run! Good job. I don’t like the Luna Moons either. They are way too sticky and I need to actually pry the gumminess off my teeth with my finger. The chomps work really well though. And I like the jelly beans as well.

Nice run!! I’ve haven’t tried the blocks yet…I heard they get stuck in teeth easily.

I’m not built like a runner either, but I really think running is more about mental perseverance that anything. I hope to run a marathon one day too, but for now I’m sticking to the halves. Reading about your training is an inspiration.

Btw- you might already have a halloween costume, but you should really go as Jessica Rabbit. It was one of my costume considerations this year until someone let me borrow a really cool flapper dress. You wouldn’t even need a wig! 🙂

I also ran 16 this morning, took some ibuprofen that I’ve never taken before at mile 11 and stomach felt really off the rest of the way. I think I am more of a Gu gal, those cliff shot blocks and gummies don’t really work for me

It’s so, so sad hearing about all of those runner’s deaths. It just goes to show that you can feel healthy and even look healthy and have other problems. That’s why it is so important to clear exercise with a physician first, I guess.

Awesome time with the run, I wish I could run that fast! 🙂
I read that article, it was very interesting. I believe, for the most part, that anyone can partake in a long distance event as long as they are physically healthy and train properly. One of the trainers at my gym said he wants to run a marathon with no training to prove that it can be done by just doing enough cardio and strength training….yeah, I thought he was crazy.

Good job pushing through 16. And I can’t convince myself to do a cold water bath no matter how far I go

Good job on the run!! I’m new to running, but I know I’m not built to be running any marathons. I’ll stick to 5Ks and maybe work up to 10ks.

Great job on the run. That’s amazing!

I’ve taken more care in my hydration levels since hearing about those runners in the news. It’s a tragedy and I hope every runner starts paying better attention. You can’t be too careful!

    Good luck with the costume.

Great job on the 16 miler.

I hear you about wondering how you can ever know if you are truly fit enough to do what you do. I figure I just need to be good about regularly seeing my doctor and listening to my body. No thinking I’m super human.
