Hello hello! This weekend I enjoyed some Mike’s Hard Lemonade as ‘research’ for an upcoming twitter chat that I’m doing with the Mike Hard’s Lemonade team and RD Manuel Villacorta on Wednesday. (This is the lite version I tried too!)
When mike’s hard lemonade contacted me about this partnership I was super excited! mike’s recently announced the “Crafted to Remove Gluten” labeling designation for ALL of its products. mike’s “Crafted to Remove Gluten” seal was specifically developed with permission from the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau ( aka: TTB), which oversees gluten labeling for alcoholic beverages in the U.S. This seal is a first of its kind for fermented malt beverages having a gluten-containing grain (in mike’s case, barley).
Turns out ALL of mike’s products have been “Crafted to Remove Gluten” for years! But so many people assume alcoholic drinks are chock-full of the G-word. (mike’s proprietary filtration process naturally removes gluten to less than 5 parts per million (ppm) as measured by the R5Competitive ELISA test.)
Because mike’s is an alcohol product vs. food, labeling is dictated by the TTB – not the FDA which governs the gluten-free labeling process in food. As a result, mike’s is not eligible for a gluten-free label because it doesn’t exist in the alcohol space.
When it comes to adult beverages, I am always looking to switch things up by trying new flavors and it’s great that mike’s also has a lighter option with its LITE hard lemonade (it’s sweetened with a touch of honey!). And, of course, I also love to share “gluten friendly” options with my readers who are leading a gluten free lifestyle.
With the holiday season in full swing, many of us will be hosting and/or attending parties, so it’s great to know that mike’s could be another adult beverage option for ourselves or guests that are leading a gluten-free lifestyle. If you, or someone you know has a gluten intolerance or other food allergy, it can be challenging to navigate the menu options at holiday soirees. So, mike’s RD partner Manuel Villacorta and I are getting together to talk more (tweet!) about it Wednesday, Dec. 10th at 6pm PST / 9pm EST.
Want to have a drink with me?
Meet me on Twitter using #mhlglutenchat tomorrow evening at 6pm PST / 9pm EST
We’ll be talking about things like:
How does mike’s remove gluten from its products?
What does “crafted to remove gluten” mean for consumers?
How can you make simple tweaks to your holiday party menu offerings so there are plenty of options for your guests who might be leading a gluten free lifestyle?
Can you drink it with a fox? Can you drink it wearing socks?
We’ll also be giving away $25 gift cards and fun mike’s swag to five winners! http://bit.ly/MHLrules
Question: What are you sipping on today? Are you a mike’s hard lemonade fan? What’s your favorite mike’s flavor?
Me: I love the lite lemonade version. And I never ‘get’ to drink out of a bottle since I don’t ‘do’ beer so it’s a fun change.
Disclaimer: This post is part of my collaboration with mike’s hard lemonade. All opinions are my own. Please drink responsibly.

I always found the regular Mike’s to be too syrupy sweet– the sugar hurt my stomach long before the alcohol! Is the light version any better?
Sue says
So far, coffee and copious amounts of H2O and green tea. Interesting…never knew it was possible to go gluten free on alcohol.

If a product isn’t made with wheat, barley or rye, it most likely doesn’t have gluten in it. Such a shameless marketing move when companies claim they are suddenly gluten free when in truth they have been all along – like Chex. Hello, it’s made with rice! There is no gluten in rice! Just goes to show that consumers often have no idea what gluten even is. But hey, hats off the companies for being smart.

Mike’s has barley in it, so it makes sense for them to label it (as crafted to remove gluten). I’ve always though Chex did that to let people who were going G-free know their products are/were gluten free but I do feel like some companies utilize it for marketing. But consumers really should do their homework!

Hmm interesting, didn’t know that about Mike’s! I hope it doesn’t alter the taste too much! (I’m sure I could get all these answers in the video 🙂

I drank mikes hard lemonade lots back in my 20s. It’s refreshing option in the summer months.
Today I drank only coffee, water and vitamin water zero.

I used to drink Mike’s, but stopped when I went GF. So great to know that I have another option and it’s one of my favorites 🙂
