Running Hair Must Haves

I’m not on the Bondi Band wagon, but get a lot of questions about them. Sorry friends, I have never tried one and can’t speak to it. But, I do have a ton of hair on my back and through trial and error have figured out what works for me.

This is my hair before a race:before the run

This is my hair after running that race:my hair on running

It took me 3 hours, 2 brushes, a lot of tears and conditioner to get that rat’s nest down Sad smile So, now I make sure to braid it each time.

Sometimes I put it in a pony tail with a braid…IMG_4796 (800x600)

Sometimes it “down braids”. But if I don’t braid it there will be hell to pay later. Using one of the best mousse for braids as advised in soulfactors, manages my hair throughout my whole run.monica at commerce 5k

I use the grip style rubber bands, which may be similar to a silk hair tie, so they don’t slip off…IMG_6301 (600x800)

Instead of a head band/bondi band/bic band, I use clips to keep my bangs and fly-aways out of my face.IMG_6295 (600x800)

Top it with a visor and get out the door!IMG_6030 (600x800)

I did a tempo run of sorts today – 1 mile warm up, 2 miles at under 8:20 (with a bit of rest between), 1 mile cool down. It was easier than I thought!

  • Mile 1: 9:38
  • Mile 2: 8:16
  • Mile 3: 8:09
  • Mile 4: 9:18IMG_6305 (800x600)

As soon as I got home I intended to stretch my legs, but decided to stretch my belly full of food instead Winking smile

Pumpkin pancakes again! topped with AB and syrup. So so good.IMG_6309 (800x600)

My Marathon Hunger has come early in this training season. I was hungry all Saturday and have been hungrier than usual these last two days too! I’m trying watch it because I don’t want to gain the Freshman Marathon 15!!!

Question: What is your must-have hair accessory for working out?

I find that putting my hair up is best. I have short hair now, but when my hair was longer, I didn’t like the pony-tail flying everywhere. I like running with a hat too. And by the way, those pancakes look delicious!

I swear I have an odd shaped head because nothing (except a hat) will stay on during my runs. I recently tried pre-wrap because I heard great things about it but it always slides off and I have to wrap it around my wrist for the rest of the run! It’s frustrating but at the same time I think I look the cutest in a hat anyways 🙂

My hair is always up in a bun. I don’t like the tail end of the pony tail whacking me in the neck and my hair does not take to braids well! Although it does look like a good way to go!

I have a short bob right now that doesn’t fit into a ponytail, so I always where a headband. I hate having wispies in my face. I will also vouch for Bondi bands- they are wide, stay in place, and do not squeeze your head.

How does that happen to hair while running? I just don’t get it! (happens to me too!) And a visor is a MUST on run to keep sun and sweat at bay. I tried a hat and my head almost exploded, so I opted to keep my head free and open on top. 🙂

I also have to brain mine! My hair is super long, about 3/4 of the way down my back so it would get super knotty if I dont, plus I hate the feeling of it touching my back when I’m sweating *shudder* I use clips to keep my bangs back mostly and sometimes headbands. I have to have every teeny piece of hair away from my face so I end up looking bald by the time I’m done lol

I have long hair like you (how does it not WHAAPPP! you in the face though??). I have to wear my hair in a high bun (either braided or not…usually braided though) with several grippy rubber bands!

I have a shit ton of hair. I’ts thick and down to my lower back. And I ain’t plannin’ on cutting it soon. I like it. But with that said, I feel your pain. It gets in the way. The worst thing is that I can never get a hair tie around it the right number of times — it’s always too loose. I find that a low braid works best for races (with just one hair tie at the bottom of the braid), for me. I don’t use clips, but that’s only because I know I’ll lose them and I’m too cheap to be buying a new pack every week or two. 🙂

I definitely need a bobby pin. Just one – to keep the bangs off my forehead. If I don’t, they stick and get gross and MAJORLY unattractive.

Monica, You have got to try putting jojoba oil in your hair before a run, the tangles will come out so much easier post run. You can find it at TJ’s! I have hair to my waist and love running distances and this keeps all my hairs on my head ;o)

My must have is a satin scarf, which is needed because I’m a black girl with curly hair 🙂 When I have my hair curly, I just wrap the satin scarf around my edges like a headband. It keeps my edges flat so they don’t get frizzy. I put the rest of my hair up in ponytail. When I have my hair straight, I twrill my bra-strapped length hair into a ball, securing with a Goody’s ouchless ponytail holder, and then, I tie down the satin scarf over my entire head. When I’m done exercising, my hair is still straight.

I wish I knew. I have short hair, so I can’t really get it out of my way. And headbands tend to slide off my head. I can put a hat on but when i get sweaty my head starts to itch. If anyone has any ideas, I’m ready for suggestions. 🙂

I always need a good non-slip headband. Also, sweat works well for keeping flyaways in check. Gross, I know. But it works.

Those grippy twisties are a MUST. And a hat makes my head too hot, but I love how it keeps my hair out of my face. I should try the clippies, because while bondi bands help, they definitely slip off at times.

I always wear my hear in a low braid and then put in a plastic HAIR band. Headbands always slip off of my head so I have to wear the thin hard plastic hair bands to keep my bangs out of my face (yes, I still have bangs).

I’m having the same problem with the marathon hunger. 🙁 I’m 6 weeks into training and I’ve already put on a couple pounds, but I know part of that reason is also stress from work. *sigh* If only intuitive eating was as simple as it sounds, right?

I double up my elastic bands…even though they are the no-slip kind…and I roll my hair up into a makeshift bun/ball to keep from getting the horrid knots like the one your picture showed. it toally works! Also I sweat alot, so I use a stretchy fabric headband to absorb the (ew!) sweat and keep it out of my face. Good times.

I have pretty thin hair so I don’t worry about rubber bands not holding but I do have long hair that also turns into quite the nasty nest when I run. I use bic bands to keep the loose little hairs back but I think I really need to give your braid idea a try to keep the nest of long hair from forming.

I use the same rubber hair bands as you do, they are the best! I just ordered some bic bands to test them out. I have a small pin head so all headbands usually slip off. I’ll see how these go!

I love bondi bands, they are the only headbands that I’ve found and have not given me a headache. I don’t have a ton of hair, but if I did, I think I would have to go the braid route. I have heard good things about Bic Bands.

I’m a huge proponent of the bun and visor combo. My ponytails swing too much when I run and drive me nuts, so my hair has to be up and back and that’s that. 🙂

      I’m a hat girl.
I pin my bangs back with a bobby pin, stick a pony tail through the back of my hat and go. Sometimes I do two pig tails, but when my hair gets too long they swing too much and annoy me. Plus I sweat a TON and the little pig tails make sweat fly all around me. 🙂

Now that it’s summer I’m really digging the running hat I have. It catches a ton of perspiration (because i’m a lady and I don’t sweat. hahahahh jk)and shields my face from the sun!

I am with you! I do the pony tail braid. my hair is thick and curly and even though I never brush it almost, It takes me FOR EV ERR to get all of the knots out if I just leave it in a regular pony when i run.

I love bondi Bands. You just have to wear them lower on your head because sometimes they slip off while you’re running. If you’re a sweaty mo-fo like me, they work great! especially under a bike helmet!

My must have hair accessory are also the hair bands with rubber or a big clip with that’s flat against the head. I usually clip it inside and do a pony tail or braids when I’m outside. Oh, and bobby pins.

I have curly hair that is half way down my back, so I feel ya on the running hair. I braid the flyaways, pull it back into a pony with gel or mousse, braid that, and wrap it into a bun. SUCH WORK! maybe I should just shave my head.
