To Weigh or Not to Weigh

Dinner· Lunch

9 Apr

The age old question…to weigh or not to weigh… that is the question.

After a very long time of avoiding the schedule (mostly because I didn’t want to know the damage I’d been doing) I have recently started weighing myself every few weeks.

I want to hold myself more accountable then I’ve been and know the scale is the best way for me to do that. I know some people check by how their clothes feel, but this latin ass certain parts of my body do not change size no matter how much I weigh.

scale

Do you weigh yourself? If so, how often? If not, why?

My lunch and dinner look super healthy because the extra goodies like this… missed the camera. Luckily I remembered my post-lunch indiscretions and had a picture from yesterday.IMG_6954

But, I do have to admit this is a pretty salad. IMG_6962

I also ate a lot of fruit today. As it gets warmer I have to remember that, no matter how much I want to – I can’t eat fruit by itself.

It only makes me want more and more and more… DSCN1599

In other exciting news…I’m going to Disney World for a quick trip later this month!

My mom, dad and Matt are going to Orlando and I found a cheap flight. I miss them so much and it’s so much cheaper to fly to FL then across the country to CA. So, I went for it!

I weigh myself once a week, Wednesday mornings right after I wake up & pee.. and with no clothes – they add weight! lol (sorry if that is TMI!) I definitely think weighing in daily can drive a person crazy and mess with your mood/self-esteem… actually, I know it can, it did to me! Your weight can fluctuate from day to day based on MANY things, salt intake, water intake, water retention, muscle soreness (when you workout & have soreness the next day your muscles are holding extra water!), so IMO, weighing daily is just as worthless as weighing multiple times throughout the same day.

I chose Wednesday as my weigh in day because that way if I kind of over did it on the weekend with salt or tequila (or salt with my tequila! haha), I give my body a couple days to get back to normal. And I can’t do Friday mornings because then if my weight is down I think to myself, “Heck yeah, I can splurge a little more this weekend!”. I feel that weighing in mid-week helps give me a more accurate measurement of where I’m at.

haha So I read your blog daily, but have just never gotten around to commenting. This time I feel like it’s a must since you and I are basically the same person! I havent checked the scale in weeks (I’m not really trying to lose any weight, so no need), but also suffer from the inability to measure weight by how clothes fit. I’ve lost ~7 pounds since the fall, but all my pants are stil uber tight. Good thing big asses are coveted, huh? 🙂

the getting on the scale thing is a very personal decision. some people totally banish from their lives while others get out in every day. you have to do what you feel most comfortable with. if it is just to check in once every few weeks, that is fine, but if it becomes an obsession and can ruin your day, then that’s not good.
i used to weigh myself at least once a day for SO many years. at the beginning of this year, in trying to make some positive changes for myself with my ED recovery, i went to once a month and the transition is much easier than i thought.

I got really obsessed with the scale for awhile so I had to stop weighing myself. I now have a good system (that works for me). I weigh myself once a month, about 2 days after my period is over. I gain about 5+ pounds during my cycle (which makes me mental when I see that on the scale!). Doing it this way has helped me a lot!

I weigh myself a few times a month just to keep track. I don’t like being surprised with pants that are seemingly suddenly too snug, and I find that keeping track of my weight in a healthy manner helps me to make better choices.

I go on kicks with the scale. When I’m really focused and trying to lose, I become a little obsessive with it. When I have too much going on and health takes a backseat (i.e. the past two months), I don’t check it as often. I guess I don’t want the “guilt” that I associate with it. Ugh.

I used to weigh every day, like others have said, and the number would definitely influence how I felt about my body that day. I stopped a few months ago, mainly because I knew I’d been pretty sedentary but was about to start running again, and I didn’t need that ‘false’ pre-running weight looming in my brain.

Now that I’m out of the habit, I just don’t care as much. Sometimes I’ll be tempted, but I think, ‘Hm, how is that number going to make a difference today? I know I’m eating right and exercising, and I feel alright about my body; let’s just leave it at that.’ I did break out the scale a week or two ago (so I could weigh my cat!), and the number was about what I expected, so no panic there!

I weigh myself a few times a week just to see if I am keeping myself in check. I feel like without the scale I can’t really judge how I am eating as well. Maybe it is mental, but sometimes not knowing my weight will keep me from enjoying something I totally could have downed.

I hope you have a great vacation!

I used to weigh myself every day and had the same problem – if it was up a pound or two it was a bad morning and affected how I felt all day. Since Christmas the only time I have been weighed is at the doctor, and I don’t even take that too seriously. I am going by how my clothes feel. For some reason telling myself I will gain weight doesn’t seem to matter when I am on a chocolate craze but thinking about how it will slow down my running helps me stop!

Have a great time in Disney – trips with family are the best!

Weighing myself makes me a little crazy. Too high and I am miserable and beat myself up. Low – and I feel great about myself. It is pretty ridiculous haw emotional I can get. But I have needed to weigh myself weekly. I try not to do it more. I am afraid that a little water weight gain I see will upset me. I have thought about weighing myself every day just to help myself realize that weight does fluctuate and isn’t a big deal.

My Weight Watchers scale does that! It will tell you your actual weight first, but then it will go on and tell you your BMI, Body Fat % and how many lbs up or down you are from the last time you weighed in. I guess you could just close your eyes for the first part if you really didn’t want to know. 🙂

I weigh every day. I’ve lost 280 pounds and am trying to maintain. I consider it mandatory because I cannot tell by how my clothes fit and how I look. I have lots of excess skin, so it can be hard to see small differences.

they should make a scale that just tells you how many lbs up or down you are from last time. that way you’d know if you were on the right track, but not have to know your actual weight. I like the pants test too.

I don’t own a scale and don’t have one to use so it’s hard for me to do so..but when i get the chance, maybe someone has a random one in their bathroom, i’ll use it, but don’t take it seriously depending on the time of day.

I try to weigh myself on Fridays. That way any damage I did on the weekend had time to come off. I do find that my weight can fluctuate 3 or so lbs depending on the day.

That watermelon looks awesome! I usually weigh myself once a week just to see how things are going, although it’s definitely more important how clothes fit than what number is on the scale. That said, I haven’t weighed for the past two months while traveling and am curious to check out the number this week.

how fun! I’d love to go to Disneyworld.

I’ve been avoiding the scale recently because it seems to make me do worse. I get depressed if I gain and over eat. If I lose, I get happy and over eat. (No kidding, it’s a vicious cycle!) I try to see how I feel in my tightest fitting jeans. It helps!

I finally bought a digital scale and weigh myself everyday. I loved it. Then I found myself going. wow, I lost 2 pounds today. I can order pizza tonight. Wow, I gained five pounds, guess I should not have ordered that pizza. Right now, the scale is my enemy. I have a pair of jeans I need to get into so I will be using that as a judge. I can lose weight everywhere but my stomach which is keeping me in-between sizes of clothes. That is my goal. So far my shoulders are getting narrower and my chest smaller. I have NOT lost one smidgen from my waist. Have fun with your family when the time comes. Having a younger brother will make it more sweet. Kids have a way of escalating the fun.

I totally have done that in the past too – if the scale is down I feel like I can eat more. Using pants is a good idea for most people. Good luck!

    Jealous of your Disney trip.

As for weighing, I weigh once a week. Same time, same scale. And REALLY, REALLY try to not “check in” during the week. Once I start maintaining and have a good grasp I will probably one weigh once every two or three weeks.

I used to weigh myself every Saturday when I was losing weight. I usually do every couple of weeks now just to make sure I’m maintaining. I wouldn’t at all except I went a 2 year period just judging by my clothes and somehow gained 25 lbs. Woops!

I was skype-ing with my madre today and she told me I looked like I’d lost weight and she asked me if I did. Then I realized actually I haven’t weighed myself in about 3 or 4 weeks… I used to be obsessed and weighed myself everyday but lately I’ve just forgotten about it. I guess because I’ve been busy?
I think the scale is a good way (weigh?) to keep in check but I’m always a little scared of becoming obsessed as I often tend to do…

I weigh myself a few times a week at the same time of day just to see where I stand.
