I often get asked if I put pictures of EVERYTHING that I eat on the blog. The answer is No. Not because I don’t want to or intend to, but because I am a…
“Grabby McSnackerson” = I randomly eat a handful of things like grapes, cereal or samples. Those three things are the worst offenders of being MIA on the blog.
Today I bought some grapes from the store and had A LOT that will not be documented here 🙁 Busted.
My dinner was pictured, albeit hastily – Pita Pizza and Broccoli. Just like I like it – with onions and extra sauce 🙂 I just wish I had bell pepps and mushrooms to make it perfect! Now I’m eating a Keylime Pie Larabar.
I gave up sweets for Lent, and am considering “sweets” = cookies, cakes, candy, ice cream, chocolate-y bars.
So, I’m going to avoid chocolate covered bars and things like that, but all natural granola bars that I wouldn’t normally eat as a dessert are okay. I found an whole almond in the middle of this bar – just a reminder that it’s all natural.
The lame happenings of Monica and Ben…
Monica: (to Ben)”What are you giving up for Lent?”
Ben: “Lent-ils”
Hey, not all our conversations can be winners, people!
************************************************************
Physical Therapy: I think some people got the impression I wasn’t going to listen to my Physical Therapist by what I said yesterday and today. I fully intend on attending PT sessions, NOT running and doing the exercises appropriate for someone with this issue.
As my fellow runners who have had these issues realize, you don’t have to halt all activity – just high impact or straining activities. I am taking it easy in my gym classes. And the sheer fact that I am not going to run for a few weeks proves I am taking this very seriously. I appreciate every one’s concern as I know, I/other bloggers/runners/crazy people need to be called out when they are being self destructive. Thanks for caring enough to comment, seriously 🙂
Intuitive Eating: I’m still on this whole IE journey and when I say I “should eat” or something to that affect, it’s not because I feel like I am obligated or supposed to just because of some rule I have made for myself. Nope, the rules are all gone and I am in a very good place.
Today I said I “should eat” because it had been over four hours since breakfast (which wasn’t larger than normal). Even though my head is in a good place now, my body is still confused.
My tummy doesn’t rumble when I’m hungry or give me other early warning signs. I go from “Not Hungry” to “shaky hands, irritable, tired…”. If I let it get to that I cannot get full (or stop eating). So, now I try to pay attention to eating every three to four hours or so. Sometimes, my hunger does show up and let me know I need something. But, it was in my body’s best interest to eat lunch at that point 🙂
Thanks for all the supportive and constructive comments lately. I know you read a lot of blogs and don’t have time to comment on them all. I appreciate when you say “word up” here 🙂

I eat every 3-4 hours whenever I can. Or when I have prepared food. It keeps the ravenous hunger and overeating at bay.

I did the same thing when I was undergoing Kneehab. Although my PT originally recommended for me to stop running altogether, I had to listen to my body and do what I felt right. I respected the fact that she was a professional, but ultimately I respected what my body was telling me more. I did what my body could handle. So, if my planned 10-mile run turned into a 3 mile run and a 10 mile bike, then whatever. You just do what feels right.

Brussels and chickpeas in a dish on Iron chef right now… thought “Monica would like this one.” Ya, time for mary ann to cut back on the RER reading, hahaha

Yeah Larabars are not good enough in my opinion to be called a sweet. I wish their textures weren’t so rando :-/

When I had to go to the physical therapy last year for my leg I couldn’t run for almost two months. So I completely understand what you’re going through. I had three PT sessions a week and then he said I could either bike or swim, maybe use the elliptical if it didn’t hurt, but I stuck with the bike. Hopefully these two months for you will just fly by 🙂

Haha love that conversation between you and ben… literally made me lol
Grapes are amazing and so addictive. But hey, there are worse things to be addicted to, am I right?
Julie @ Pickley Pear says
Frozen grapes are an awesome alternative for dessert, they are sweet and take forever to eat! I’ve given up ‘sweets’ also, but in the same sense you are – granola, pb, luna bars and yogurt are good to eat, just not cookies, cake, ice cream, etc. I’m doing well so far, it’s only been 3 days!
Katie @ Health for the Whole Self says
I personally struggled with messed up eating patterns for so long that when I first started intuitive eating, I sometimes had to force myself to eat even though I wasn’t all that hungry. My body was just so out of whack, and the messages it sent me were so random and confusing! But after I stuck to a more regular eating schedule for a few months, my body definitely adjusted, and I could definitely notice my hunger signals more clearly.

I had a feeling you would be clarifying that physical therapy comment 🙂 I read a running article about injuries (including runners knee) this morning and it made me think of you. Do you ever/have you tried swimming? It mentioned that as being one of the best exercise options for those with runners knee, but obviously us runners are very dedicated to our roads 🙂
Just thinking and sharing…

Lent-ils!!!!! LOL I love it, this cracked me up.
I am a grabber also (umm…with food, not men….unless the mood strikes but that’s a different post for a different time) sometimes I just get the urge for something and this is no way I am waiting to get my camera out of its case, put it on the right setting, take the pic, take another in case the first one turned out skewed, etc. Other times, I am at work and my snack is a couple pieces of fruit. I am pretty sure the blogging world (and hopefully the rest of the world) know what an apple and banana looks like.
Megan @ Healthy Hoggin says
Oh, I gave up sweets for Lent, too! It’s hard! Larabars are a good cookie-replacement, though! 😉 I’ve been sipping on peppermint tea after dinner, which is kind of helping, too.
So sorry to hear about your knee! Injuries are one of my big fears with running, too. I’ve been trying to be really careful during my marathon training, because my dad has had two knee replacement surgeries from running many marathons and not being smart about it. Now he can’t run at all!
Good luck with your PT and healing! You’ll be running again in no time, I’m sure!
Lindsay Perrone (goodiesgalore) says
How are you feeling since giving up sweets? I need inspiration as they are my number one binge food.
Angie says
Wow..so someone tried to call you out on you not listening to your PT? Its funny cos everyone is quick to talk about someone else but claim that their crap dont stink….
MONICA— you do YOU! If you feel like you can go to spin, walk, etc then do it. You know what will aggravate your runners knee. Heck i am a serious runner too, i cant tell you how many times i have had shin splints, or pulled muscles, heck being 7 months preggo with back issues and still went out to workout. You know where your threshold is. You are not going to purposely workout for the sole mission to continue injuring yourself. I remember being injured and hearing the doc say i cant run for however long…it is painful, hurts your soul. Some folks dont get it, it would be like a doc telling a famous singer dont sing. When that is your livelihood, you have to find something else in the meantime to fill that void.

delurking to say … haha lentils!
i thought that wasn’t such a lame happening.
and good for you for taking it easy on your knee while finding alternative exercise.
Amanda (Two Boos Who Eat) says
I have a tough time documenting all of my eats on the blog for the same reasons. And sometimes I am too hungry to snap a quick picture. Blah.
Kristilyn (My 29th Year) says
Grapes are sooo good! They’re always my snack when I’m cooking dinner. Just pop a handful of their sweetness and I’m good to go!
And I really wouldn’t consider Larabars as a sweet anyway … it’s not like they contain sugar or anything bad. Just healthy fats and natural sugars. What’s wrong with that? Key Lime Pie Larabars are awesome! I’ve been making homemade PB&J and I think they’re addictingly good. 🙂
Only you can know how to handle your body, that’s for sure. I know I mentioned that I was diagnosed with the same thing as you but told that I could run so long as I taped my knees, but to each their own. You put on a lot of mileage and I’m sure you wouldn’t want to change that!

grapes are such a weakness of mine too! you can’t have just one…or twenty 😉
and i really like how honest you are. you definitely know yourself well and what works for you. i think youre being really smart with the whole PT thing. as a fellow runner i know how taking time off sucks but it seems like you have a solid plan to stay fit while healing up 🙂
