I ran the Revel Canyon City Half Marathon today! Oh, and I PR-ed!!! That was a very pleasant surprise!
Revel Race Series Half Marathon Recap – Canyon City
Let’s start from the beginning…
Revel Canyon City starts in Azusa, a city northeast of Los Angeles. It’s about 52 minutes away from me. And you have to park at the finish line and catch a bus to the start no later than 5:30am. Working backwards that means I woke up at 3:30am to get out the door by 4am.
So, I set everything out the night before to make it as easy as possible to wake up, change, grab my stuff and get on the road!
My pre-race gear: Pre-Workout (that I mix the night before and put in the fridge), sunblock, Pro visor, Nathan belt, GPS Running watch, running sunglasses…
I got to the parking lot and jumped on a bus by 5:15am. The ride up to the half marathon start line is about 30 minutes.
I sat next to a girl who was running her first half marathon. It was fun to talk to her about it. She was nervous and I told her it was going to be AWESOME. I love talking about running so I probably blabbed on and on, hopefully it distracted her.
The buses dropped us off and all the half marathon runners were waiting around, peeing, eating, resting, stretching…
Last year I ran the full marathon – that starts another 13.1 miles up the mountain and it was freezing! So, I was prepared and wore a sweatshirt and raincoat to help me stay warm.
(I tried to wait until the guy behind me moved away to snap a selfie, but that was taking forever so I just went for it.)
I walked around and warmed up until it was time to start. As I was pacing around nervously I spotted something you don’t want to see before a race…
A skull.
Luckily, it was an old animal skull, but still kinda weird.
Then, it was GO time!
The race course is really gorgeous. It winds down the canyon and there are some great views. The only drawback is there are not spectators until the very end when you get into the city.
I thought it was a downhill race but I remembered it wrong. The first half of the full marathon course is all downhill. But I do remember a hill around mile 15 (which is on the half course). The half course has a good amount of downhill sections, but there are some inclines too.
New Half Marathon PR
I just decided to push it since the downhill sections made me feel speedy. There were a few times I felt like I was really slowing down, but I just did what I could. And it worked – I had a really strong race and finished the half marathon in 1:41:26.
Turns out that is a new half marathon PR for me! I did NOT expect it at all.
During the race I found Pam and ran with her for a while. Pam is super fast, but recovering from an injury so she was just my speed today. It gave us time to catch up! She might replace SR (who ran this race with me last year but has since ditched me to start a new life in Seattle).
We also met Dana at the finish line! She had a great race too. Love meeting running peeps at races 🙂
The Revel Canyon City race is really well organized, has a great course and a lot of good perks. They give runners a solar blanket, beanie and gloves for before the race. The race tee is a pretty navy blue. And after the race you get pizza and pie. Hello, yes.
Great race. New PR. Pie. Running with friends. It was the best.

Terri Gray says
Tried to post yesterday, but there was a “glitch” so I shall double post today. Yesterday I did a Super Moon hike up Echo Mountain, which was about 4.5-5 miles, but also challenging due to elevation and vertical distances. I also FELL on my way down (in the dark). My main takeaway–I am still a klutz!! And I am irritated I ruined my fave running tights. But it was worth the views!! Today my walk/run was about 7 miles and it was warmish, but it’s supposed to be more November-like soon. Let’s hope so!!
Sarah B says

10 miles DONE! Only was supposed to 8, but when your boyfriend has a MAF test to run around a track and the track is 2.5 miles away from home – you kind of have to keep running to kill time while you wait for him to finish up his run. And it was too cold to want to spend 30 minutes walking home once I did hit mile 8.
Claudia says
Hot yoga today!
Ariana Woodall says
Congrats on the PR!!! I ran up and down a giant sand dune at the beach then ran along the water with my dog.

One hour of strength training for me today. It was a DVD with 15 minutes each of abs, buns, thighs and arms. Ugh, can’t wait to run again but for now I guess I’ll just focus on strength training!

Did my first Rock N Roll half marathon tonight …. good weather, fun run! 2, well 3 mishaps during tonight’s run on the strip …. 1st I had to stop to pee at mile 3, that has never happened… 2nd somehow around mile 5 I managed to eat shit … so embarrassing! Luckily my ego was hurt more than anything else and I brushed myself off and continued on my way and 3rd my cousin who ran with me had a blister and we had to stop at the medic to get a bandaid!!! But hey we finished!!!

Fun Race Recap! My fav parts were the PR and the Skull. Because nature? Today I ran the Surfers Point 10K in Ventura. It was awesome! I always seem to end up talking to someone on the course. My fav was an older dad running with his daughter. At mile 5 I asked “how are you doing?” He said “great!” I said “We are almost there!!” And he said YAH! And he totally smoked me at the end lol. He even shook my hand once I finished. Why are runners so nice?! Ok good week of miles to all 🙂

Logged a very low key 3.5 today just to get the legs moving, and then went on a few long walks with the hubby & the pup! It was chilly-ish (in Chicago that means it was in the 40s) but got up to the mid 50s so I had to take advantage of the weather!
Nick Wright says
4.27 miles for me today.
Annemarie says
13.1 miles this AM. First time I have ever run a half while hacking up a lung. I do not recommend it. I ended up walking a LOT and came very close to pulling out of the race altogether. But I pushed on. Now I am laying on the couch nursing myself back to health. Hopefully I will wake up refreshed and ready to run again! Ha. I have poor judgement.
