Hello from Richmond! I traveled all the way from Orange County, CA to Richmond, VA super early yesterday morning. It as a long day of travel, but totally worth it since I’m here visiting one of my favorite companies – Sabra Hummus. Love. Since it’s chilly here and it is such a quick trip I decided not to pack up all my winter running clothes and hit the gym for a running workout. (I’m sharing today’s treadmill speed session below.)
And it’s probably good I didn’t pack winter running clothes because my secret passenger takes up so much room!
(Why do cats always look like you just insulted their mother?)
Up and off before the sun!
I always wear comfortable clothes to travel – especially when it’s a cross country flight and I’ll be in some sort of transportation mode all day. It’s the usual ensemble, but have I told you about my magic scarf? It has a hidden zipper pocket. This is perfect for holding my phone and earphones since I want them easy access but don’t want to lose ‘em!
And before we get to today’s running workout – I wanted to share last night’s dinner.
Well, I don’t want to share a bite – I want to share the idea.
I steamed a big batch of brown rice yesterday. Half of it I put aside to eat straight up. And the other half I used to cook up a masterpiece (I’m exaggerating but you should be used to that by now).
Healthy Shrimp Fried Rice is super easy to make. You can swap the shrimp with leftover chicken or tofu too.
I cooked shrimp in coconut oil until done (they cook up super fast). Then, added a few cups of brown rice, seasoned with garlic and soy sauce. Added peas and carrots. Then, made a little valley in the rice mixture and cooked up an egg in it. I repeated the egg step 4 times because I like eggs. Mix and serve topped with green onions (and cashews I added after this picture).
Speed Up Treadmill Workout
I created this Speed Up Treadmill Workout to get in a good speed session while out of town. Since we all run at different paces I set the speeds at “Your Pace” which is your usual even effort pace. Then, to get your speed faster increase the speed 1 mph. (Keep the incline at 1. or 1.5 the entire time.)
For example – if your running speed is 5.5 mph bump it up to 6.5 for 1-2 minutes depending on the time table below. Happy Running!

Slogged through 9 miles of running this morning. It was slow and I walked up the hills. Then this afternoon we walked with the dogs in the park for an additional 2.5 hilly miles. I’m now couch surfing for the rest of the day 🙂

I usually hate treadmill workouts but this one seems doable! Will have to try it soon 🙂

I’m still trying to give my body some recovery time after the Walt Disney World Marathon so it’s another rest day for me. Treadmills are great for speedwork. Enjoy your trip!

I despise the “dreadmill” and used it last night, I will run in snow which we have our fair share currently in Ontario CDN, but last night was delayed and figured saver to go to the gym, plus wanted strength training. YOU did not talk enough about Sabra Hummus…I LOVE, LOVE their hummus. My fav Supremely Spicy my mouth is watering because I know in 10 minutes for 3pm snack time I have a whole two tablespoons to eat with my veggies!!! Hope you enjoyed your visit. I might have to give your treadmill workout a try even though I struggle with 20 min runs on it!

I did a hill workout yesterday but I do like doing speed on the treadmill it helps me keep my increased speed more consistent. Its too easy to slow down when you are running outside when things get hard. that stir fry looks delicious!

I love that you didn’t give an actual mph because I always get intimidated when I see a blogger use a high number and I am “running” at a 4.5 mph!! I am totally going to use this next time I work on out the treadmill!

i ran 6 miles on the treadmill this am (with some speed in there a bit) before work, b/c it was 20 degrees here and i wasn’t ready for that at 5:30am! ps my dog always snuggles into my suitcase when i’m trying to pack, too. poor lil softies – they hate to be left behind.

Today is rest day for me too! But I brought my gym clothes to work just in case I get antsy this afternoon and need to take a break.
I did a super similar treadmill workout on Tuesday – but I did it “negative splits” style, since I’m training for a half. Basically after the warm up, run a mile at your normal pace, a mile at a slightly faster pace (+ .5 mph), and then the final mile crank up the speed by .1-.2 every minute or lap. I ended up running that final mile in 8:15, which is super fast for me! Having to concentrate on when to change speeds takes your mind off the fact that you’re on a treadmill and that your legs are crying.

Ah, thanks for the treadmill workout! With a little one and the freezing temps, my runs are inside my basement these days. Exciting, I know. Wishing spring comes early this year!
