That Would Only Happen To You II

Fun· My Life

4 May

I have talked about how weird things happen to me and people say, “That would only happen to you!” before (exhibit A). Well, it still happens fairly often and I don’t even realize most of the time (until someone points it out). This week I asked an innocent question and got that reaction again.

First, I do realize it’s odd and awesome that Ben felt the need to ice my still very pink broken toe the other night. Very sweet.

I guess it would only happen to me that I’d meet a stranger on the internet that wants to take care of my feet…

I was eating my See’s Candy last night and found a piece of chocolate smashed into the clasp of my bra when I got ready for bed.

Only me.

I once found a cat too. But I hope that happens to a lot of you because it’s awesome.

I went on a walk a few days ago and found a dollar. At first I didn’t pick it up, I feel weird finding money because I figure someone is going to come back and look for it. But it was ‘only’ a dollar and I looked around to see if anyone was looking for something on the ground – nope. So I decided to pick it up.

That reminded me of how I found $5.00 at the airport when I got back from Israel. I thought it was too much money to just take so I stood by it and looked around for the person who lost it. Most likely whoever dropped 5 bucks at the baggage claim of LAX was long gone, but I didn’t feel right taking it. I picked it up and handed it to the person working at the nearest booth. I told them someone dropped it and in case they came back… I figure they wouldn’t and the person could just keep it but I thought that was better than taking it myself. I don’t know.

“What are the rules for when you find money?” – I asked my friend.

“Only you would have that problem!” – my friend dismissed my question.

I tried to explain that people on the news are always returning money and they’re good people. I want to be a good person. How do I track down random dollar owners?!

At the end of the day I still don’t know the answer.

Question: Did you lose a dollar?

What is something weird that’s happened to you?

Yeah, so $1-$20, you keep it. $50, you look for the rightful owner. Seriously, Monica, it’s okay. Sometimes I think it’s God’s way of blessing us. Don’t sweat the small stuff. You’re a good person when you return a wallet with the money in it to the rightful owner because there is an address there. A free floating $1-$20 bill is a blessing from heaven meant for you.

I have denomination rules. Under $20-keep.
$21-99 find person of authority nearby.
Over $100 take to police station. They hold it for 30 days and then it defaults to me if no one claims it.

If I find money I put it in the next charity donations tin I see. I wouldn’t feel right taking it, no matter how small the amount.

I hate it when I eat my mix of almonds, raisins, and chocolate chips while driving…..then when I get out of the car I find raisins or chips smooshed in between my pants…ugh! I need to stop eating in the car I guess..

the story that always comes back to me when i think of “only happen to me” moments is: i once opened a bottle of champagne over a sink in an old apartment that had those pocket lights in the kitchen ceiling, and the cork flew directly up and into one of the lights, smashing it and raining down glass all over me — and nobody was hurt, thankfully, and the champagne was saved! it was a crazy moment that turned into a cool story after. 🙂

I was running on our boardwalk one day (OC, MD) and I found a wallet (it was a fat one!). I picked it up, looked around and decided to hand it over to a cop on the boards when I saw one (they’re usually every few blocks). Anyway, I started running again, and I heard someone yelling behind me … stop!, Stop! My impulse was to run faster (LOL), but then I realized it might have been the owner and was afraid he might tackle me, so I stopped. I’m not sure if he thought I was stealing his wallet, after all I was running in the opposite direction. I tried to explain I was just going to hand it off, but then I decided I needed proof so I took out the ID and did a face check. It was him. Ha! Loose money is mine and I will run fast in that situation… 😉

I was making popcorn in the hot air popper yesterday and a screaming hot kernel shot out, when down my top and got stuck in my bra. I have a nice little kernel sized blister on my boob….ouch!! Who else would that happen to?!

I actually found a $20 outside the park where I walk my dogs one day. I still have it lying around, because it felt and looked a little funny. I couldn’t decide if it was a REALLY GOOD counterfeit or had just been very weathered; and I’m not comfortable walking into a bank and asking, “hey, is this counterfeit?”

      Almost certain the rule is:

      Finders -Keepers
      Losers -Weepers

If other material is also found as well to identify the owner- then I would do my best to return it. Otherwise the first rule supersedes.

I’ve always understood “the rule” to be “finders-keepers,
      losers-weepers”
      …right?
