I got some requests for an update on how I liked my eyelash dye (dip) after I’ve had them for a while… I got my eyelashes dyed and partial extensions on the ends just under three weeks ago. (It was part of my partnership with Groupon’s Summer of Fun.)
Before I tried this I have been somewhat happy with my lashes since they are kinda long. But, they’re strawberry blonde (lighter than my hair, which I don’t consider strawberry blonde, but that’s another post for another day) so if I’m NOT wearing mascara I feel like my face is weird.
#GingerProblems
So, I was excited to try this out but knew I might look like a drag queen since I have a tendency to channel that look when I go out.
(The picture above is without the dip or extensions, just a make-up day from the past)
Before this I had NEVER worn fake eyelashes of any kind! I really had no idea what to expect.
Immediately after: I liked the results. I liked that the dye just brought out my natural lashes and the side extensions were pretty, but not too much.
What I didn’t like:
The lashes stuck together. So, I had to delicately separate them after showers and throughout the day.
The top lashes stuck to the bottom sometimes so it kinda snapped my eye shut in the middle of a blink.
I couldn’t wear mascara with the lashes. You’re not supposed to, but if you do you can only wear non-waterproof, which I don’t even own.
I couldn’t wear eyeliner with them. I love eyeliner, but all my liners are waterproof and you can’t use any strong make-up removers near your eyes or it will take the lashes off too.
I feel like when the extensions started to fall off they took my lashes with them too (so it left them thinner).
For a night look I like eyeliner and mascara and I couldn’t do that with these.
> On the left ‘going out’ make-up. On the right immediately after the dip.
What I did like:
Waking up and looking like a normal person instead of a ginga
Not having to put on any make-up for two weeks.
This picture is just after waking up the first week:
Overall: Tomorrow it will be three weeks since I got them. You are supposed to get refills within two to three weeks but my extensions are completely gone – so if I really needed them I’d have nothing left. I think they only last two weeks before you need refills. The dye is still hanging on a bit though.
I liked them! But, I think it’s a lot of trouble to do every two weeks and potentially a lot of money. I would probably consider getting them for a vacation – I would have loved to have them in China because we were out the door so early every day to explore. But, we were also taking a lot of pictures so I wanted to have a little make-up on! That would have been a good time to just wake up and go.
Question: Have you worn fake eyelashes?
Have you tried eyelash extensions? What did you think?
Brigitte Bardot says
I think you are beautiful in natural. Best, stick to that.
CFF says
I got my eyelash extensions November 2013 before a cruise and have had them refilled every month since because as a blonde I have no eyelashes without the extensions or mascara… and well, extensions don’t run in water 😉 They looked great on you!
Losing Lindy says
oh I like the follow up. I also have light lashes, mine are blonde.
Sue says
Seems high maintenance having to go back every 2 weeks.
Tara@PNWRunner says
I’ve had eye lash extensions for 3 years now. I love them, but there are times when I get frustrated with them. Is that possible? Frustrated with false lashes? Yes, especially when the stick to your lower lashes and the expense. I go every 2 weeks for fills and I get super anal about the fills now. I’ve been contemplating making the leap to going back to all natural, but it’s so hard.
Linda @ Fit Fed and Happy says
I think you should stick to mascara! I think it looks better on your eyes. 🙂
Marin says
Have you ever tried coconut oil as an eye make up remover? I know it sounds weird, but it works like a dream with no scary chemical ingredients!
runeatrepeat says
I have heard of that, but haven’t tried it for that purpose. I use baby oil straight up – it’s super cheap and never stings 🙂
Jody - Fit at 56 says
You look beautiful first wake up – holy cow!!!! 🙂
LOVE NuNaturals!!!!!
runeatrepeat says
Ha! I’m very lucky that my front facing camera takes the worst quality pics 😉
Katie Morse - The Project Neon says
Interesting! I have never worn fake eyelashes of any kind, or had my eyelashes dyed. I have really blonde eyelashes and have considered it, but don’t mind just wearing mascara. 🙂 Although, somedays it would be nice to just walk out the door!

I have tried fake lashes and I am not a fan, they look beautiful, but I feel like they weigh down my lids. I’ve had lash extensions for about 4 years and I am obsessed. I can go about 4 weeks between fills and its costs about $50+tip. I naturally have very thin, short lashes, so for me it’s nice to get up and go with just a little powder and gloss. There are so many different types of lashes that when I feel like mine are breaking too much, I have her switch to the lighter, thinner ones. You do lose them when your natural lashes grow out, it’s just more noticeable because there is a little “spider leg” attached to it 🙂

I have light brown hair and dying my eyelashes had very little impact. This is only for gals with blond or red hair. I also have had custom false eyelashes made that you glue on when you want them they might be what you really want. Custom sounds really shi shi but they just try out different sets on you and then cut the right ones to fit. I actually prefer mink eyelash extensions. They are much finer than the ones most people get and they look super natural. I find they last 5 weeks before you need a fill and I don’t bother with anything but eyeliner with them. Sometimes the glue bothers me. I had to search around to find somebody that was good at applying the lashes and then the glue and clumping was not an issue. Some places sell a coating that is supposed to make them last longer. I haven’t tried that.

I too am cursed with very light eyelashes. I look a little weird without mascara (my kids tell me I look “scary” without it). I used to pay to get my eyelashes professionally dyed, once a month. After a while, I figured I could do it myself and have been very happy with the results. Here’s the stuff I use. It’s 15 dollars for a tube that will last you a year. You mix it with a few drops of hydrogen peroxide and apply like mascara. Leave it on for a few minutes and you’re done. YouTube has lots of videos on how to do it. (If you can put on mascara, you’ll be fine.)

I like my lashes and I’m an au naturale person (I wear makeup when I’m dressing up, but not on a daily basis), so I’d probably skip em. They look really nice on you though! 🙂

Do you think just getting your lashes dyed (no extensions at all) would be worth the bang for your buck? I have toyed with this idea many times. I have dark blonde lashes that are relatively full/long, so they look good with a coat of mascara, but without I look quite washed out! Especially since my hair is brown so it’s like… um… why don’t you have any eyelashes? My brows are like this too. Have you ever dyed your brows?
Lindsay says
Hey! I’m a redhead so I don’t have any visible eyelashes or eyebrows without makeup or dye. I was getting my eyebrows dyed professionally for a while but hated that they always came out like dark caterpillars. I found the dye at a beauty supply shop for $40 (the cost of one salon appointment.) I diluted it and applied it in smaller doses to get the color I wanted and loved it. Plus it paid off because the dye lasted over a year!
DO NOT DO THIS FOR YOUR EYELASHES. That should always be done professionally.
Flower says
I have wanted to try them for some time but I’m not big on the whole maintenance thing. I can’t even do fake nails so eyelashes would be a big hassle for me. I also spoke to several friends who work in a salon and they told me that over time, they do tend to thin out your regular lashes. So, I I’ll stick with my makeup-less blonde eyelashes for now.
Chatelaine says
I haven’t done fake eyelashes, I’m afraid of a glue reaction in my eyes…….. My sister had a bad infection, and well if I was fine with the glue I’m afraid I’d be addicted and go broke. I was *this* close to getting Latisse at the salon but then I’d for sure go broke.
Stumbled across “RapidLash” at Costco a month ago, $40 for 2 tubes of eyelash enhancers. OMG My lashes are LONG and THICK! But I guess that doesn’t help with the strawberry blonde issue.
Leslie @ Life Begins @ 30? says
I usually do fake lashes for weddings if I am a bridesmaid, but no other times. The lash extensions look awesome! I have dark lashes, so I don’t think I would ever dye them.
Beth @ Running with the Sunrise says
I got full, va-va-voom eyelash extensions for my wedding and they were fabulous! I didn’t have to worry about eyelashes coming unglued and they looked perfect in photos! But, I let the grow/fall out because 1) they’re really expensive and 2) I got the really long ones because I wanted them for wedding photos, but day-to-day, they would get in the way of things sometimes and I had to wear my glasses lower on my nose to fit my lash extensions. If I had a lot of money, I’d probably keep them but do them at a shorter length (somewhere in the medium range not long and super dramatic).
Renee says
I’ve been getting eyelash extensions since April and I LOVE them! They have easily cut 15 minutes out of my morning routine – this coming from someone with stick straight lashes (so jealous of you curly girls!). I’ve had my current fill for 5 weeks and they still look good – definitely not as full as the first day, but enough where I don’t need much maintenance. With regard to the mascara, by week 4 when they start getting thinner, I put waterproof mascara on them. Haven’t had any trouble with the extensions falling out, but I’m a rebel like that. I usually fill them every 6 weeks and it costs me $50 plus a $10 tip. Considering the fact that my husband gets his hair cut once a month and it costs more than that (don’t get me started), I don’t feel guilty at.all. I think if I were to take them off, my lashes would be considerably thinner and shorter so that’s my biggest fear at this point.
Livi @ Eat, Pray, Work It Out says
Ive never worn fake eyelashes..if it didn’t seem like such a hassle I might try!
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
Definitely an interesting thing. I’m not sure I’d ever do them or if I did it would probably only be before a big trip or event or something like that.
Hannah @ Hannah the Healthnut says
I have never done either, I have tried to do fake ones, but failed miserably, seeing as I missed the fashion gene that comes with being a female… :/
I know how to do mascara, though! Woot Woot!
Shawna says
i’ve never had an eyelash dip or gotten extensions, but that’s def common in New York and i’ve had friends do it. my eyelashes are as black as black can be and of average length, i’d say, and since i’m nahhhht super girlie, a lil curl and mascara-ing is good for me. 🙂
Sarah says
They look so pretty on you! Very natural, but making your eyes pop! I’ve never gotten them, mostly a money thing I suppose. I’d give them a try for a special occasion. I’m too lazy to bother with much makeup, but I’d love to have the look. Thanks for the review!
everydayasian says
Ooh thanks for the review! I’m with you, I don’t want to go without eyeliner or mascara. They look great on you but after hearing how high maintenance they are, it doesn’t seem worth it.

I got fake lashes for the first time for my friend’s wedding back in February. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the look, but I’m pretty sure I can accomplish close to the same look with a good mascara. (I love Sephora’s Full Action and Benefit’s They’re Real mascaras.) What really killed it for me in the end was losing half my actual lashes with them when they started falling out. Lesson learned.
Jen @ Pretty Little Grub says
I’m with you, I like them for vacation. I would never keep them up every 2-3 weeks, whose got time for that!
sally @ sweat out the small stuff says
Never tried fake lashes or extensions. I get anxiety with anticipation of when things will “expire”. I used to get a keratin treatment to loosen my curls and while it was supposed to last 3 months it never lasted more than a few weeks. It would drive me nuts.
Even coloring my hair drives me nuts when I see it’s getting brassy or growing out.
If only we lived in a society wear au natural was perfectly accepted =)
