Turkey Trot Training Program

5K / 10K

FacebookTweetPin
26 Sep

Thanksgiving is about 60 days away!

It’s my favorite day of the year. But it’s also a day surrounded by delicious FOOD and sometimes it opens the flood gates to a “feast fest” until Christmas. I don’t want to gain 10 pounds this holiday season, do you?

Actually, it would be kind of nice to show up on Thanksgiving a little more fit and toned!

Maybe even a little HOT to (turkey) Trot?!

hot to trot turkey trot 10k

So, I have created a Turkey Trot Training program for anyone who wants to run a 5K or 10K on Thanksgiving (or that following weekend). It’s a very popular race week so I’m sure you can find a race near you. Check your community/city calendar or Running in the USA. (search for races on or near Nov 28).

Monica, I’m so excited about this! My first race ever was the Turkey Trot in my city two years ago and I had just started running. I was able to run maybe half of it, but fell in love. Anywho, I’ve been running on and off since then and finally got focused on it this summer and have never felt better. I was just thinking about the race this year and how I really want to be able to run the whole distance for the first time ever – it’s 8K – and then I hopped over to your blog and saw this and knew it was meant to be. Thanks for offering this, it’s going to be motivational and a lot of fun. I love your blog – it inspires me and makes me laugh on a daily basis. Thanks for being you 🙂

Running is great exercise and I do that most of the time too! i am doing the 5:2 fast program to lose weight and I accompany it with the 5:2 fast formula. Using the formula helps me run even if I am in my fasting days. One of these days if I am not busy anymore I will sign up with programs like these. Thanks for some enlightenment!

      Hey,
I was wondering if you knew of anyone interested in running a random marathon November 17th, its the Surfers Point Marathon in Ventura, CA. It is the first year and looks like a nice course, but I cannot run it anymore because of my internship with my schooling conflicts with scheduling. If you don’t know of anyone off the top of your head, can you post it on the blog sometime? They allow transfers and I only paid 65!!! Super good deal for a full 🙂 my email is monkeya33@msn.com

This might be a dumb question, but can you elaborate on the “hot to trot” options (and what level of runner those would be for)? This wouldn’t be my first 5K, but I’m definitely not advanced either.

The 5K run walk is for your first 5k or if you are coming back after time off. The other “hot to trot” options will provide additional workout suggestions for toning.

It has become a family tradition to the Gobble Gait, a local Thanksgiving Day race. Last year, my 8 year old (now 9 yr old) stepson joined me for the 8K. Yes, his FIRST race ever was 5 MILES….and he kept pace with me the entire time!! Still SO proud of him for that! He hasn’t decided yet whether he’ll do the 8k again this year or not…but I’m guessing he probably will.

I usually do the 8k while the rest of the fam (nieces, sister in law, hubby, MIL) all walk the 5k. Then, of course, we go pig out!

I’m considering doing a turkey trot for the first time this year. I’m running a full marathon on Nov 17th so I’m gonna wait til the last minute and see how my legs feel the week after. There’s a Thanksgiving 5-Miler nearby, so hopefully I will be doing that on the 28th!

Any advice for someone running more than one race on Thanksgiving? I’m doing a 5 mile race + a 5k race in Oceanside, CA. There should be a bit of time to rest in between the races, but I’m not sure which distance to train for. Should I train for an 8-mile race?

Yes, you should train for the complete distance since it’s the same day. Good luck!

This is odd advice because if you are racing a 5 mile race and racing a 5K, with a break in between that is totally different from racing an 8 mile race. You should actually train by doing long intervals with long rest to mimic actual race day conditions. Training to race 8 miles is completely different from racing 5 miles and then racing 3.1 miles (on fatigued legs).

I would personally train where I did a lot of tempo-ish runs that built in some rest. i.e. 4 miles at tempo pace, 2 miles recovery (even walking recovery possibly) and then another 4 miles at tempo pace. Or something like that. Start smaller, obviously, but I’d want to train where I ran hard on tired legs.

That’s great advice! I didn’t read her comment as wanting to “Race” the distances but complete them. I should have asked for more information. But, training for the entire distance would get someone ready to complete both races. Back to back races – especially same day(!) is very difficult.

It’s a very unique situation and one most people don’t specifically train for – I know there is a similar 5k/10k race near me on T-day, and I don’t see people training for it with long rests in between because the races are kind of fun runs.
